In the case of insects, most published DNA barcoding studies focus on species of the Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Hymenoptera and especially Lepidoptera. In this study we test the efficiency of DNA barcoding for true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), an ecological and economical highly important as well as morphologically diverse insect taxon. As part of our study we analyzed DNA barcodes for 1742 specimens of 457 species, comprising 39 families of the Heteroptera. We found low nucleotide distances with a minimum pairwise K2P distance ,2.2% within 21 species pairs (39 species). For ten of these species pairs (18 species), minimum pairwise distances were zero. In contrast to this, deep intraspecific sequence divergences with maximum pairwise distances .2.2% were detected for 16 traditionally recognized and valid species. With a successful identification rate of 91.5% (418 species) our study emphasizes the use of DNA barcodes for the identification of true bugs and represents an important step in building-up a comprehensive barcode library for true bugs in Germany and Central Europe as well.

The aim of the study was to determine the diversity of arthropods and decreased seed weight in the three cocoa cultivation systems. The sampling of arthropods used pitfall traps, light trap, and Yellow Fan Trap. The found 2684 arthropod individuals represented 12 orders, 47 families and 106 species. Diversity index and abundance index were the highest for cocoa crop ecosystem A2 (2.9 and 13.1). The largest decrease in weight of cocoa seeds was found in the A1 locations (8.34%) and the lowest in the A3 locations (3.61%). We recommend that cocoa cultivation should use protective trees. FAUNA AND ECOLOGY OF BUGS (HEMIPTERA, HETEROPTERA) IN THE COASTAL GREY DUNES IN LATVIA. – Latvijas Entomologs 42: 95-105. Abstract: The bugs were investigated in six dune sites along the West coast of Latvia. Pit-fall traps were used to collect epigeic species and entomological net to collect grass-dwelling species. The population density of epigeic species was low and was limited by moss-lichen cover. Nysius thymi and Miridae had a high population density and dominated over grass-dwelling bug species. The vegetation cover of flowering plants also limited the distribution of bug species. Key words: Heteroptera, fauna, ecology, coastal dunes, Latvia. Introduction Coastal dunes have specific environmental conditions and thus possess a specific entomofauna. At the same time the coastline is a barrier for dispersing insects. In Latvia, dunes cover comparatively small area and are among the northernmost situated in Europe. Dune invertebrates have been studied fragmentarily in Latvia. Only accidental data can be found in the literature. Very few faunistic notes can be found about the species composition and ecology of dune bugs (Spuris 1950; 1953; Spungis 2002; 2003). The aim of this study was to identify species composition of the bugs and factors limiting their distribution in the grey dunes. Methods Five study areas were selected at the West coast of Latvia (fig.

Conservation Biology Research Grants Program Division of Ecological Services Minnesota Department of Natural Resources EFFECTS OF STANDARD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON, AND FAUNISTICS OF NATIVE PRAIRIES: A study of three sites in western Minnesota. Report submitted to: Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy, and the R. J. Kose foundation. David Rider, Systematic Entomologist Gerald Fauske, Research specialist Paul Tinerella, Graduate student Department of Entomology North Dakota State University Fargo, ND May 2000 ABSTRACT From 1995 through 1999 an ongoing study was conducted to examine the effects of standard prairie management practices (burning, grazing, haying) and unmanaged prairie, with regard to arthropod communities. Additional objectives were to gather baseline data on the arthropod species present on remnant prairies of western Minnesota, to identify rare species found on theses sites, and if possible, to determine prairie indicator species which might be used to identify dry, mesic, or wet prairies types in a manner similar to the plant indicator species used in botanical studies. At present, nearly 35,000 insect specimens have been pinned, labeled, and identified representing more than 750 species. As additional material is processed and identified, we expect the number of species found on these sites to more than double, perhaps even triple. This report provides a summary of work completed as of May, 2000, and includes species lists, information on species distributions (state records and extensions of known species ranges), presence of rare or state endangered species on these prairies, diversity indices for prairie sites, types, and management practices, and management histories of the study areas.

© 2016 Daniel R. Swanson DEAD BUGS DO TELL TALES: IMPLICATIONS OF A NEW FOSSIL ASSASSIN BUG (HETEROPTERA: REDUVIIDAE) FOR THE EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY AND SYSTEMATICS OF AN EXTANT LINEAGE BY DANIEL R. SWANSON THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Master's Committee: Doctor Sam W. Heads, Co-Chair, Co-Director of Research Doctor Steven J. Taylor, Co-Chair, Co-Director of Research Professor Andrew V. Suarez ABSTRACT The following thesis comprises three parts: (1) the description of a new fossil assassin bug, (2) the use of this newly described taxon to inform the phylogenetic history of the family, and (3) a survey of previously-described extinct taxa compiled into the first taxonomic catalog of fossil Reduvioidea. The first chapter presents a new Eocene (Ypresian) fossil assassin bug, Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. (Reduviidae: Harpactorinae), described from the Green River Formation of Colorado. The specimens informing this description are marked by an extraordinary level of preservation, particularly in external and internal structures of the adult male genitalia. Following the description, discussions of phylogenetic signal and the implications for the systematics and evolutionary history of the group are presented. The second chapter uses Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. as a new calibration point in order to re-estimate the divergence dates of Reduvioidea. This analysis also utilizes a new set of fossil calibrations from previous studies. Tree topology is inferred using MrBayes and RAxML, and divergence dates are inferred using BEAST2.

Ectrichodiinae, millipede, prey specificity, communal predation, Costa Rica, Rhiginia cinctiventris Abstract. Ectrichodiinae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), the millipede assassin bugs, are a speciose group (>660 species) of assassin bugs that appear to be specialist predators on Diplopoda, or millipedes. Apparently capable of coping with the noxious defensive com- pounds produced by many millipedes, Ectrichodiinae are engaged in a predator-prey relationship with millipedes realized only by few other arthropods. Unfortunately, feeding behaviors of Ectrichodiinae are inadequately documented, rendering this exciting phe- nomenon largely inaccessible. We here present a literature review on ectrichodiine prey selection and feeding behaviors, with sup- plemental original observations on Rhiginia cinctiventris (Stål, 1872) in Costa Rica. Thirteen species in 12 genera have been observed to feed on millipedes. The majority of diplopod prey species were reported from the orders Spirostreptida and Spirobolida, whereas Polydesmida are rarely attacked. Ectrichodiinae insert their stylets at the millipede’s intersegmental membranes on the ven- tral and ventro-lateral trunk area or between the head and collum. Communal predation was observed among conspecific nymphs, among groups of nymphs with a conspecific adult, and more rarely among adults. Immature ectrichodiines were rarely observed to engage in solitary predation.
