TALENTED AND GIFTED YOUNG PEOPLE’S CULTURAL FUNDING SCHEME: APPLICATIONS 201 0/2011

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this report is to outline the Talented and Gifted Young People’s Cultural Grant applications made to date by various individuals requesting support during 2010/2011.

BACKGROUND

A number of individuals have made application to the Talented and Gifted Young People’s Cultural Grant Scheme to support the furtherance of various artistic developments and training opportunities. In addition, four dancers have been selected from local auditions to represent the North Lanarkshire Council area at the handover event for Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 to be held in Delhi in October 2010.

CONSI DE RATIONS

To date a total of ten applications and awards for support have been received comprising:

Sean Downes, Irish Dancer, age 13 from Chalpelhall - to support specialist equipment, travel and additional tuition in Irish Dance - award f800. North Lanarkshire Council representatives to the Commonwealth Games Delhi in October 2010 to perform as part of the mass cast of dancers - Stephanie Fulton from Coatbridge, Charlene Ross from Motherwell, Clare Murray from Wishaw, Amanda Guidi, from Coatbridge - award f3,500to each dancer to participate in this event. Monica McGhee, singer, age 21 from Motherwell - towards postgraduate study at The Royal College of Music in London - award f 1500. Joe Murphy, musical theatre student, age 20 from Bargeddie -towards the final year of a three year theatre arts course, Laine Theatre Arts School, - award f1000. Kerry Connolly, dancer, age 15 from Uddingston - towards attending a summer school at in July 2010 - award f600. Erin O’Toole, dancer, age 19 from Cumbernauld - towards her final year of study at , London - award f1500. Kirstie Steele, musical theatre student, age 18 from Stepps - towards her final year of study at in Kent - award f1500. All funding requests will be utilised in the 201 0/2011 financial year.

The young people who have applied for or been nominated for funding all demonstrate significant ability in their field of the arts. Those attending courses have beaten off significant competition to be awarded places and most are studying at nationally or internationally recognised institutions. t 4. CORPORATE CONSIDERATIONS

The grants will be met from the Talented and Gifted Young People’s Cultural Grant Scheme, 2010/11
