‘When I grow up I want to be a dancer! If I don’t dance I will die!’

Ever found yourself saying this? Now to the reality of the dance world! Unfortunately, dance is not like other subjects where hard work = dream job. It takes dedication, an open mind, flexibility, adaptability and a thick skin to survive the dance world. The information summarised in your talk should help give you a glimpse into the competitive industry of dance.

What can you actually do? Few people are able to sustain a career doing one area, and variety is more stimulating and gives a sustainable income. Dancers live what we call a portfolio career. You are the future of dance! Careers Fact Sheet A Rough Guide To Becoming A Dance Teacher By NATALIE ALDRIDGE (Jan 2007) Amendments by ANNA HELSBY (Jun 2014)

You probably want to have a career in performing first, but have you considered what you may want to do after or what other opportunities are available to you within the dance industry?

Dance is part of the UK's cultural industries that employ over 1 million people, generate over £100 billion a year and have a growth rate of 16% a year. Jobs range from performing, teaching, , community dance, administration and management to costume, theatre technicians, journalism, therapy and notation.

Many dance specialists have a variety of dance related jobs through their careers or combine several at once. Some performers for instance, dance with a company, occasionally choreograph a dance piece, teach and work on projects in schools and colleges. Therefore, most people who make a living in the dance industry need to be very well trained in at least one aspect of dance and have a range of other skills that enable them to be flexible and adapt to varied work situations.

One of the most important requirements for a successful career in dance is commitment and determination to succeed. Most fields in dance are highly competitive and often just being talented is not enough. You need a thorough training, to know how to keep yourself up to date with the latest developments, be healthy and highly motivated.

Have you got what it takes to become a teacher?

Dance teachers can work with people of all ages and teach many different styles of dance. You need to be able to choreograph for your pupils and in some jobs such as in schools, know about the and such aspects as anatomy and physiology and .

State Schools In primary schools dance is a compulsory activity and mostly taught by pupils' classroom teacher. In secondary schools there are many opportunities to teach dance as an individual subject or combined with other subjects such as physical education, drama or performing arts.

To teach in state schools you need to have:  Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), obtained on completion of your Initial Teacher Training (ITT) involving 18 weeks of teaching placement.  Minimum of two A Levels or equivalent plus five GCSE's at grades A-C, including Maths and English. Primary teachers may also need a science GCSE.

Depending on whether or not you wish to work in primary or secondary schools. There are two main routes common to both:  Take a degree in dance at University (or vocational dance college) and then take a one year teacher training course called a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)  Study to teach on an undergraduate university course specialising in a subject area such as Physical Education with Dance, as well as learning about teaching and a specific age range

Universities offering PGCE specialising in Dance:  University of Brighton  University of Exeter  Royal Academy of Dance

Private sector Most teachers working in private dance schools have qualifications to teach in specific dance styles such as ballet or . A good standard of personal performance or grade is required to enter for these examinations and qualifications are usually in the form of a teaching certificate or diploma by of one of the recognised associations.

There are five Registered Dance Awarding Bodies and qualifications from these bodies are also accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and have been admitted to the National Qualifications Framework.  British Ballet Organisation  British Theatre Dance Association  The Cecchetti Society  The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing  Royal Academy of Dancing

The courses vary, but can usually be taken on a part-time / home study basis. To enter children for examinations you must be on the ‘Register of Teachers’.

It is also useful to look at the Council for Dance Education and Training website www.cdet.org.uk as this details further accreditation centres and accreditation procedures.

Diploma in Dance Teaching and Learning (Children and Young People) The Diploma in Dance Teaching and Learning (Children and Young People) (DDTAL (CYP)) – is the first qualification of its kind, designed for practitioners working with children and young people outside formal education. It has been developed at the request of the major national dance organisations and led by Youth Dance England on behalf of Dance Training and Accreditation Partnership (DTAP) – a consortium of leading dance industry agencies, committed to building capacity and removing barriers to participation in dance outside of formal education, by people of all ages and abilities.

You are the future of dance! Careers Fact Sheet

Dance and Drama Awards: how to apply Dance and Drama Awards are given to students who display the most talent and potential at their audition. As dance and drama courses are very popular, it's vital that you get your application in quickly.

The audition stage Once you've decided on a course, contact the school to ask for an audition and tell them that you want to apply for an award. The school may send you an application form to complete and return. Since demand for this type of training is high, it's best to get in touch well with the school well in advance. Dance and Drama Awards are given to the students who show the most talent at the audition stage, regardless of their financial circumstances

If you've applied before Once you've accepted a Dance and Drama Award, you won't be able to apply again except in very rare circumstances - so it’s important to make sure you've chosen the right school and course before accepting. If you've received an Award before and you're applying again, you must inform the school you're applying to and tell them why. A second Award is only given in exceptional cases, so it's unlikely that your application will be successful unless you were forced to stop your previous training through no fault of your own - for example, through illness or injury. You won't be able to apply for a second Award if you’ve completed the course for which you got your first Award, or if the first and second Awards combined would last for more than four years. You can still apply for a Dance and Drama Award if you've already had a different form of financial help to do a further or higher education course. When you apply to one of the schools for a Dance and Drama Award, they should also send you an application form for help with living costs. You'll have to apply every year for this additional help. If you do receive extra money, it will be split into three payments. You'll get these at the start of each term.

If you disagree with a decision If your application for an Award is unsuccessful, you may want to appeal. You'll need to write to the school you applied to for an explanation. Even if you don't receive a Dance or Drama Award, you may still be allowed to study at the school or college of your choice - but you'll have to pay the tuition fees yourself. However, if you're over 18 you may be able to take out a Professional and Career Development Loan. Claims for help with living costs are assessed by the Learner Support service. If you receive an Award but think you're getting less help with living costs than you're entitled to, contact the helpline to find out how to appeal.

Applying for help with fees and living costs When you apply for a Dance and Drama Award, the school you're applying to should also send you an application form for help with living costs. You'll have to apply every year for additional help as the rates change. If you do receive some extra money, it will be split into three payments which you'll receive at the beginning of each term.

Applying if you're disabled If you're disabled, you may be entitled to extra financial help.
