#YSW Ward 12 eNewsletter – February, 2017 Upcoming Metrolinx Community Open Houses Metrolinx has been increasing GO Transit service, with the goal of transforming from a rush hour commuter service to a two-way, all-day regional transportation service. There are two GO corridors that go through our community of York South-Weston: 1. the Barrie GO line 2. the Kitchener GO line MPP Albanese has invited Metrolinx to give the community an update on the work being performed on these two GO corridors. We hope you will find the time to attend the upcoming two meetings: Community Update Meeting on the GO Barrie line: ***TONIGHT*** Today, GO Transit’s Barrie line provides weekday rush-hour train service between Barrie and Toronto. Through its Regional Express Rail Project, Metrolinx is transforming the system to deliver two way, all day service. The Barrie Go line will stop in our community, at the New Caledonia GO station (intersecting with the Eglinton Crosstown) EA and design is underway. Monday, February 6th, 2017 Location: Charles E. Webster Public School Gymnasium 1900 Keele Street 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm Community Update Meeting on the GO Kitchener line: The Kitchener GO line (formally known as the Georgetown South Go Corridor) has a stop in Weston and a future stop is planned at Weston and Eglinton Avenue, intersecting with the Eglinton Crosstown. Thursday, February 9th, 2017 Location: York West Active Living Centre 1901 Weston Road 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Amesbury Community Centre has reopened: Emergency maintenance has been resolved and programs have resumed. St. Clair West Services for Seniors The Alzheimer Society of Toronto will be hosting an information free session and training on Dementia 101 for Family Caregivers. Monday, February 13, 2017 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., 2562 Eglinton Avenue West (Keele and Eglinton Ave. W) 12 Division Community Police Liaison Committee The 12 Division Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) is made up of community volunteers and police service representatives from 12 Division and meets the third Thursday of each month from 7-9 pm at 12 Division (200 TretheweyDrive). The CPLC's mandate is to work together in identifying, prioritizing and problem-solving local community and policing issues. Toronto City Council Highlights - January 31, 2017 Waste collection east of Yonge Street Council considered the matter of curbside waste collection service east of Yonge Street and voted to refer the matter to staff for further study and a later report to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. The current curbside collection system is split between contracted collection west of Yonge Street and in-house collection by City workers east of Yonge Street. Transit fare inspection and enforcement The Toronto Municipal Code will be amended allow members of the Toronto Transit Commission's transit enforcement unit to tag and tow vehicles that disrupt transit service. Council approved the measure in the context of a report on a new transit fare inspection and enforcement model recently adopted by the TTC. Parking options for commuters Council agreed to direct staff to consult with stakeholders and report back by April on the parking needs of commuters using the Spadina-University subway line in the northern part of the city. The objective is to consider circumstances that have reduced commuter parking in the area and recommend options for more commuter parking. City of Toronto seeking 'six words' from residents to help celebrate Canada's 150th birthday The City of Toronto is asking residents to share a story in six words as part of the "My City, My Six" exhibition this fall in support of TO Canada with Love. TO Canada with Love is the City of Toronto's year-long program of celebrations, commemorations and exhibitions honouring Canada's 150th birthday. Toronto's Poet Laureate, Anne Michaels, has created her own six- word story ("We belong where love finds us") as an example and inspiration for those who want to participate. From February through May, Toronto residents of all ages can share their six words via email to [email protected] and are asked to include their first name, the name of their neighbourhood and their age. February is Black History Month Residents are encouraged to participate in the many events that City divisions and agencies have planned throughout the month, in addition to dozens of community-based programming and events. There are even many online exhibits to celebrate Toronto's black history. The Black History Month schedule at the Toronto Public Library is packed with fun and thought-provoking events including lectures, dance and art exhibits, and films for the whole family. Greensaver FREE Home Energy Upgrades, Installation at NO COST to You Your local hydro company and the IESO (Independent Electricity Systems Operator) have joined together under the Home Assistance program to help Ontario homeowners and tenants make their homes more energy efficient. The Home Assistance Program (HAP) provides income-eligible homeowners, residents and tenants with free energy upgrades in their home. HAP helps homeowners reduce their energy bills by replacing old and inefficient equipment with new equipment that uses less electricity. The interim bill is the first of two regular tax bills that will be mailed out this year. The 2017 final tax bill will be mailed in May. Program applications and information, including qualifying criteria for Vacancy Unit Rebate Program, Rebates for Registered Charities, Property Tax Appeals and Property Tax and Water Relief Programs for Low Income Seniors and Low Income Persons with Disability are available at www.toronto.ca/propertytax or contact 311. Eglinton Crosstown Update Where we are at with Stations in York South-Weston Mount Dennis Station Update: Work continues on the foundation for the Maintenance and Storage Facilities, including making improvements to ground condition for the building footings. Mud slab pouring will begin soon for the station box; a mud slab refers to a minimum thickness, slab of concrete that normally does not have any reinforcement. Upcoming work will include utilities relocation over the winter and spring of 2017. Keelesdale Station Update: To support the temporary shoring and excavation works for the Keelesdale Station, crews have shifted/ flipped traffic to the east side of the intersection at Keele Street/Trethewey Drive and Eglinton Avenue West. Ongoing work includes piling on the north side of Eglinton Ave west. Upcoming work includes relocation of existing water mains which will happen in 4 to 6 weeks. Caledonia Station Update: Shoring work will continues on the main station for another 16 weeks and the relocation of Bell utilities will continue for another 2 weeks. Upcoming work includes the relocation of hydro utilities and the relocation of the traffic lights at Blackthorn Avenue and Eglinton Avenue West from their current location to a location outside the work zone. The work will take place in 3 stages over a one week period. A Paid Duty Officer will be present to direct car and pedestrian traffic during this activity.
