  • Star Trek and Religion
Star Trek and Religion: Changing attitudes towards religion Changingin Voyagerattitudes towardsand DS9 religion in Voyager and DS9 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine • Differences between DS9 and other Trek series: – Takes place on space station (repeated contact with different species, not just per- episode contact… deeper cultural understanding? – Religion central to premise, multiple episodes – Regular worship events featured: prayers, temple attendance, meditation, religious hierarchy, etc. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine • Does DS9 as a series respect religion? What factors might indicate that it does respect religion? What factors might indicate it does not? • Were we more open to the spiritual in the late 1990’s then we were in the 1980's (or 1960's), or less so? • Is “respect” another way of saying “patronizing rejection”? Star Trek: Deep Space Nine • Sisko’s “divine parentage”:revealed in Season Seven, Sisko’s mother was human, possessed by Bajoran Prophet – Mother left after Sisko born - mission accomplished! – Sisko is therefore sort-of, in a sci-fi way, of divine parentage - brought to life deliberately by beings worshipped as Gods. – First time ever “gods” are shown to act outside the species to whom they are sacred • What does this say about Star Trek: DS9’s treatment of the divine? Is this a more sympathetic treatment than Classic Trek or Next Gen? Star Trek: Deep Space Nine • Sisko’s Journey – Identified as the Emissary by spiritual leader of Bajor in pilot episode (“Emissary” 1993) – Religious role accepted reluctantly, but only as subordinate to Starfleet secular way of understanding (“Destiny” 1995; “Accession” 1996) – Truly accepts his religious role in fifth season - (“Rapture” 1997) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine • Sisko’s Journey, con’t – Starfleet role and Emissary role come into conflict in sixth season - Sisko chooses Starfleet role, and disaster follows (“Tears of the Prophets” 1998) – Season seven (final season) - Sisko follows spiritual path, fulfils destiny - religious journey compete.

  • Mind-Sifter Salmon Pages.Fdx
"MIND SIFTER" STAR TREK PHASE II Introduction from our screenwriter Rick Chambers: I have many great memories related to "Mind-Sifter," from the moment I was asked to create the teleplay from Shirley's magnificent story to the long hours and unflagging enthusiasm of the shoot. One memory that's especially dear to me is linked to the memorial service. While I was working on the teleplay in December 2013, my mother was dying. She was in hospice as I wrote the chapel scene and passed away as I finished the script. So the words I gave to McCoy, about the need to mourn, how it's part of life, and how we move on from grief and despair to hope, all were themes I was dealing with personally at the time. Then, when we shot the scene months later, and Jeff Bond delivered that powerful performance, I was in tears because those words were so right, so true. They resonate in the next scene, too, when Kirk makes his escape from the Klingons ; with his life seemingly about to end, he finds that window of hope, where "grace will lead me home," as the song goes at that moment he leaps through the Guardian. All of this was very meaningful for me personally -- and, I hope, meaningful for those who watch the episode. We shot all asylum shots at Ticonderoga High School. Our producer, Rob Mauro did extensive research and the architecture is period correct! TEASER FADE IN: 1 INT. ASYLUM HALLWAY--NIGHT 1 A dimly lit hallway, old and rough at the edges, a facility operating on a shoestring.

  • Challenge #4: Mission Accomplished “Design a Mission.”
Challenge #4: Mission Accomplished “Design a mission.” In this challenge, the contestants were asked to design a mission with a special focus on making a Maquis or terrorism themed mission. The winning card would earn the chance to be play tested in Project Boomer, the upcoming expansion centered around the Maquis. Mission design can be difficult because of the wildly fluctuating standards of what makes a mission “good,” and the extremely limited amount of space on the template. How did our contestants do in their attempts to make playable missions? And which mission will end up in testing for Boomer? This document contains the results from this challenge, as well as all of the comments and feedback provided during the judging. • Praise for Manu Saadia
PRAISE FOR MANU SAADIA “Manu Saadia proves that Star Trek is an even more valuable cultural icon than we ever suspected.” —Charlie Jane Anders, Hugo Award winner, editor in chief, io9 “In Trekonomics, Saadia reminds us of what made Star Trek such a bold experiment in the first place: its Utopian theme of human culture recovering from capitalism. Smart, funny, and wise, this book is a great work of analysis for fans of Star Trek and a call to arms for fans of eco- nomic justice.” —Annalee Newitz, tech culture editor, Ars Technica “To understand the fictional world of Star Trek is to understand not only the forces which drive our real world, but also the changes that are necessary to improve it. Manu’s book will change the way you see three different universes: the one that Gene Roddenberry created, the one we’re in, and the one we’re headed toward.” —Felix Salmon, senior editor, Fusion TREKONOMICS TREKONOMICS MANU SAADIA Copyright © 2016 Manu Saadia All rights reserved.
