La Civiltà Cattolica and Catholic Responses to Islamic Terrorism Marco Ceccarelli 10403320 B.A. (Honours), UWA, 2007 M.A., UWA, 2010 This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Humanities History and European Studies 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the discourse of the Jesuit journal La Civiltà Cattolica and its implications for the broader debate on transnational Islamic terrorism in the twenty- first century. Given the large body of post-9/11 secular political literature on this modern phenomenon, the response of Catholic intellectuals has not received the critical analysis it merits. The examination makes an original contribution to scholarship on religion and violence by framing the Jesuits’ propositions as an alternative “soft-counterterrorist” approach based on interreligious and intercultural dialogue. Jesuit scholarship has been a traditionally potent manifestation of the Catholic viewpoint on global affairs. The Jesuits’ most significant journal, La Civiltà Cattolica, has regularly contributed to the international discussion on the nature of Islamic terrorist violence. The journal’s “semi-official” status allows it to transcend boundaries imposed on official organs of Catholic information and still reflect the views of the highest Vatican authorities. This study analyses La Civiltà Cattolica’s discussion of the relationship between Islam and violence over the past thirteen years and attributes the journal’s adoption of a less critical, more pro-dialogue, approach to the controversy surrounding Pope Benedict XVI’s 2006 Regensburg lecture. The study also frames the Pope’s lecture as a watershed moment that simultaneously rocked Christian-Muslim relations and set in motion numerous interfaith initiatives. The views of the journal have challenged established political and academic understandings that see a direct link between Islam and violence, instead considering Islam as a religion of peace that has been manipulated by extremists. The thesis provides two chapters of contextual information and three of discourse analysis. The contextual chapters interpret the change in the Catholic response to the Islamic religion in general and to the phenomenon of political violence in particular. In the analytical chapters, emphasis is laid on the non-violent measures favoured by the Jesuits, including collaborations between peace-seeking Christians and Muslims aimed at countering both hard counterterrorism strategies and the propaganda of violent extremists. i Declaration The thesis is my own composition, all sources have been acknowledged and my contribution is clearly identified in the thesis. Huntington’s “Clash of Civilisations” theory in public debate.1 Huntington’s idea that post-Cold war conflict would be dominated not by ideological but by cultural and religious contention seemed, to many, the best way of making sense of an event that would in the following years be repeated in other Western countries. Despite criticism by numerous scholars that Huntington had misinterpreted the history of civilisations,2 his prediction of the kind of intercultural and interreligious clash that would affect the twenty-first century makes his theory a suitable starting point for this thesis. Huntington’s theory continued to make headlines throughout the first decade of the twenty-first century and was especially used in the month of

The world was stopped in its tracks by an unnatural suspension of activity that interrupted business and pleasure. “For weeks now it has been evening. Thick darkness has gathered over our squares, our streets and our cities; it has taken over our lives, filling everything with a deafening silence and a distressing void that stops everything as it passes by. We feel it in the air, we notice in people’s gestures, their glances give them away. We find ourselves afraid and lost.” These are the words Pope Francis used to portray the unprecedented situation. He pronounced them on March 27 before a completely empty Saint Peter’s Square, during an evening of Eucharistic adoration and an Urbi et Orbi blessing that was accompanied only by the sound of church bells mixed with ambulance sirens: the sacred and the pain. The pope has also stated that this crisis period caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is “ a propitious time to find the courage for a new imagination of the possible, with the realism that only the Gospel can offer us.”[1] The thick darkness, then, allows us to find the courage to imagine.     The Vatican Secret Archives The Vatican Secret Archives, recognized as the most notable and most impor- tant archives in the world, are distinguished by the abundance and variety of their collections (mostly constituting complete and independent unities) which have gradually been added from the seventeenth century onward when the in- stitution was established to become the central archives of the Church. A large part of their contents long predate the beginning of the Archives, in many cases by several centuries during which time material was handled in different ways, often complicated and not always clear. Even more than the time ele- ment, the geographical extent of these Archives makes them complex. Unlike other collections, they have a universal character, for they are the archives of the Catholic Church. Although now in great part open for consultation by students, the Archives have kept the official title of "Secret", a title formerly given to sovereigns' archives which were considered as private and only to be used for purposes of State or of government, apart from the rare occasions when access permission was given to scholars. Even after being opened for consultation, the Vatican Archives cannot be called public. The Pope not only owns them but retains their management and direction, and it is only by his concession that students are admitted (Regulations of the Vatican Archives, arts. 1 and 2). To understand their nature and their purpose better, we may recall that ar- chives are an organized collection of documents emanating from or received by a corporate body in the course of its activities.

It is specifically animated by the following research question: What are the effects of bringing religion into the public sphere in new democracies, especially those whose theological values are considered to be hostile to democratic precepts? My analysis presents a theory for modeling the dynamics which are created when states allow hostile religions more access to the political and public spheres during moments of democratization (or lesser forms of political liberalization) by a) allowing religious political parties to contest elections and b) biasing religion-state arrangements in favor of religion. Drawing from more than eighteen months of field research in Italy and Algeria, I test the mechanisms of my theory through in-depth case studies in both a Catholic and Islamic setting and then use cross-national data on religion-state arrangements by Grim and Finke (2006) and Fox (2008) to statistically explore the theory‟s wider explanatory weight.
