Last, but not least, thanks to my family, cheerful colleagues and friends for just coping with me! i INTRODUCTION The present work arises out of two main circumstances: first, a personal interest in the fascinating worlds of translation and diplomacy; second, the realization that diplomatic translation as carried out within Embassies is still a largely unexplored field within the academic discipline of Translation Studies. Given the fact that the world of diplomatic relations is traditionally somewhat inaccessible to outsiders, the decision was taken to investigate translation within the multimodal context of Embassy websites. The advent of the Internet as an international medium for the dissemination of information has been revolutionary both for the practice of diplomacy and translation, granting both fields an unprecedented visibility. Websites are becoming increasingly indispensable for the public diplomacy of diplomatic Missions. Being multimodal in nature, they enable Embassies to promote their political, economic and cultural interests with an enhanced impact and outreach potential compared to the past and, at the same time, create novel demands for translators. For the purpose of this work five Embassy websites have been selected: the British Embassy website, the Canadian Embassy website, the Australian Embassy website, the USA Embassy website and the New Zealand Embassy website. All of them present a bilingual version (English-Italian). Translated websites lend themselves particularly well to an interdisciplinary study approach that caters both for their intrinsic multimodality and the translation/localization process they have undergone. Chapter 1 outlines the broader context for the study of Embassies with a view to assisting a deeper understanding of their significance for the conduct of bilateral relations. An historical account of the origin and evolution of diplomatic practice is provided, followed by an overview of major contemporary issues in studies on diplomacy and an in-depth description of the running of a contemporary Embassy. Chapter 2 explores the notion of translation today as it has evolved within the academic discipline of Translation Studies. The origin and evolution of the discipline are discussed in detail and the notion of translation as mediation is addressed with a view to highlighting the fundamental role played by translators in the daily practice and process of translation. Chapter 3 lays the methodological foundations for the applied analysis of the selected Embassy websites. The relationship of translation with globalization and the ii related phenomenon of localization is first discussed, providing a general framework for the translational analysis of the selected Embassy websites. A working field for the study of Embassy websites is then identified within the context of multimodality, drawing on the work in visual grammar of Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). Chapter 4 finally addresses the analysis of the selected websites from the visual and translational point of view. First, the websites are described in terms of content and semiotic design applying the compositional, interactional and representational semiotic categories indentified by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). On this basis, the overall diplomatic meaning conveyed by each website is assessed. Second, each translated website is compared against its original to establish what has been translated and what has not been translated, describe the main translation strategies involved and ultimately evaluate the extent to which the translated texts reflect the diplomatic priorities accorded by each website. The overall aim of the present research is to emphasize the increasingly importance acquired by diplomacy in international society in the last few decades and the need to investigate the communicative strategies employed by bilateral Mission. It also investigates the reasons and mechanisms giving rise to nationalism, and how it is perceived, expressed and ‘translated’ into other cultures. A core focus within the nationalist paradigm is the theme of national identity, with social exclusion ideologies such as racism operating in the background. Two contemporary Greek films have been chosen, which deal with themes of identity, nationalism, xenophobia, anger and fear in different contexts. The study is carried out by drawing on the theories of emotion, language, translation and cinema, to analyse the visual and audio components of the two films and ascertain their translatability to an Australian audience. Both films depict a similar milieu to each other, which is plagued by the lingering nature of all the unresolved political and national issues faced by the Greek nation, in addition to the economic crisis, a severe refugee crisis, and externally imposed policy issues, as well as numerous other social problems stemming from bureaucracy, red tape and widespread state-led corruption, which have resulted in massive rates of unemployment and financial hardship that have befallen a major part of the population. In spite of their topicality, the themes are universal and prevalent in a number of countries to varying degrees, as cultural borders become increasingly integrated, both socially and economically.

This phenomenon of regional governments developing international relations, often called ‘paradiplomacy,’ has been most visible in Western industrialized liberal- democracies. In thinking about paradiplomacy in developing and post- communist countries, considering the experience of regions such as Quebec, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Flanders and Wallonia could be instructive for understanding the logic of this activity, highlighting key choices that need to be made, and pointing out potential challenges stemming from the development by sub-state units of international relations. This paper begins by distinguishing between three layers of paradiplomacy and makes the argument that paradiplomacy can be a multifunctional vehicle for the promotion of interests and identity.     English and Translation in the European Union This book explores the growing tension between multilingualism and mono- lingualism in the European Union in the wake of Brexit, underpinned by the interplay between the rise of English as a lingua franca and the effacement of translations in EU institutions, bodies and agencies. English and Translation in the European Union draws on an interdisciplinary approach, highlighting insights from applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, translation studies, philosophy of language and political theory, while also look- ing at official documents and online resources, most of which are increasingly produced in English and not translated at all – and the ones which are translated into other languages are not labelled as translations.     1 A DICTIONARY OF TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING John Laver and Ian Mason 1 2 This dictionary began life as part of a much larger project: The Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Speech and Language (General Editors John Laver and Ron Asher), involving nearly 40 authors and covering all fields in any way related to speech or language. The project, which from conception to completion lasted some 25 years, was finally delivered to the publisher in 2013. A contract had been signed but unfortunately, during a period of ill health of editor-in- chief John Laver, the publisher withdrew from the contract and copyright reverted to each individual contributor. Translation Studies does not lack encyclopaedic information. Dictionaries, encyclopaedias, handbooks and readers abound, offering full coverage of the field. Nevertheless, it did seem that it would be a pity that the vast array of scholarship that went into The Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Speech and Language should come to nought. Consequently, we offer this small sub-part of the entire project as a free-to-use online resource in the hope that it will prove to be of some use, at least to undergraduate and postgraduate students of translation studies – and perhaps to others too. Each entry consists of a headword, followed by a grammatical categoriser and then a first sentence that is a definition of the headword. Entries are of variable length but an attempt is made to cover all areas of Translation Studies. At the end of many entries, cross-references (in SMALL CAPITALS) direct the reader to other, related entries. Clicking on these cross- references (highlight them and then use Control and right click) sends the reader directly to the corresponding headword.

There are now over 200 regional 'embassies' in Brussels lobbying the European Commission, networking with each other and generally getting involved in the emerging European policy communities. There is not a border in the European Union without a cross_border cooperation initiative and the borders of the candidate countries are fast being organized. Inter_regional associations have become important meeting places and no ambitious regional politician lacks a network of contacts abroad. This is a far cry from the world of a few years ago, when regionalism was contained safely within the borders of the nation_state and foreign affairs were the exclusive prerogative of the sovereign state.

Fansubs started being studied after the phenomenon started gaining popularity within communities of anime fans. That used them as a way of access to the products they desire to consume. Creating different opinions that range as a way of going against the “top- down corporate-driven process (using) a bottom-up consumer-driven process” (Jenkins, 2004, p.37) to remarks against their legality, as they modify and distribute a copyrighted work for free. The majority of the studies made around fansub culture revolve around the experience of anime, and until recently started researching different kinds of media, like videogames, news videos, webpages and more. Even with the existence of these studies, few researchers focus on the motifs of the fansubbers (fans that do subtitles) to start doing them. This thesis will focus on studying how the members of these groups get engaged with a product to start doing free labour using the theory of Spectrum of engagement of Hill (2019). Also interesting to this thesis. Will be the idea of appropriation to understand if the fansub does something beyond the translation to take ownership of the product fansubs re-distribute. In the last years, there has been a decrease of active fansubs, as new legal and accessible ways to get the content had been made available.

    Identity Paradiplomacy in Québec Stéphane Paquin École nationale d’administration publique Identity Paradiplomacy in Québec This article explains why Québec is one the most active subnational governments at the international level. Traditionally, researchers discuss paradiplomacy and protodiplomacy, but neither concept fits the case of Québec very well. In Québec, there is a consensus among the political parties that favors “identity paradiplomacy.” The fundamental aim of Québec’s identity paradiplomacy is to construct and reinforce Québec’s national identity by undertaking international actions abroad. Identity paradiplomacy is more intense than typical paradi- plomacy and is distinct from protodiplomacy in that it does not aim for political independence. The twofold purpose of Québec’s international strategy is to galvanize Québec’s development and to achieve international recognition of Québec as a nation abroad. L’objectif de cet article est d’expliquer pourquoi le Québec est un des États fédérés les plus actifs sur la scène internationale. Règle générale, les spécialistes utilisent deux concepts, ceux de paradiplomatie et de protodiplomatie, pour expliquer les actions internationales des États fédérés, mais ces deux concepts ne rendent pas justice au cas du Québec. Au Québec, il existe un consensus entre les partis politiques pour mettre en œuvre une « paradiplomatie identitaire » dont l’objectif fondamental est la construction et la promotion de la nation québécoise par l’entremise d’actions internationales.
