In TESL Program In the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development Language Group: Armenian Author: Donna Rodriguez Program Contact Person: Nancy Cloud ([email protected]) Armenian Language Group Specific Informational Report Donna Rodriguez Spring 2010 TESL 539 HISTORY -Armenian dates back to the 4th century -Only link to extinct languages and civilizations -It is an independent branch of the Indo-European Language Family -Today 5 to 6 million people speak Armenian -The language is spoken primarily in Armenia, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and the United States. -Smaller communities where Armenian is spoken are Turkey, France, and Iraq. -Nearly half of Armenian speakers live outside of their homeland due to spreading out because of the Armenian Genocide. Map of the Armenian Genocide Source: http://www.armenica.org/history/en/overview/genocide.html Key Dialects • The two modern dialects are Western Armenian and Eastern Armenian. • Western Armenian was influenced by the Ottoman Empire and by the Arabic and Turkish languages. • Eastern Armenian was influenced by the Russian Empire and kept the original pronunciation. • Almost all of their Turkish lexical influences were removed following the genocide. • There is a mutual comprehension between the two dialects. Phonological • Armenian alphabet created in 406 AD. because the cuneiform scripts were unsuitable for the Armenian Church. • Mesrop Mashtots based the new alphabet on the Greek alphabet which had an almost one- to-one correspondence between sounds and letters. • Original alphabet still used today with additional letters. Armenian Alphabet • Classical Armenian distinguishes seven vowels: a, i, schwa, open e, closed e, o, and u (written as a, i, ə, e, ē, o, ow and u respectively). • It contains 31 consonants and 40 sounds. • Some consonants like ‘p’, ‘k’, and ‘t’ have more than one sound. • Several sounds do not have any English equivalents. • Many letters have numerical value. Eastern Alphabet Source: omniglot.com Western Alphabet Source: omniglot.com Morphology An example of an agglutinative word can be the following Armenian is an dialogue: agglutinative language where derivative words are created by joining morphemes Difficulties for Modern Eastern Armenian Speakers • Since MEA does not have gender distinction, third- person singular pronouns will be a problem because MEA uses one pronoun to correspond with English he, she, and it. • MEA speakers may have difficulty with where to place stress on a word because English distinguishes between words to determine where to place stress . Ex. Export or export produce or produce – noun vs. verb • The definite article ‘the’ is replaced with a suffix that is added to the noun, but the indefinite articles a, an, some and any do not have any direct equivalents. Grammar • The Armenian language is not restrained by grammatical rules or principles of syntax, so it provides more flexibility. • Variations often depend on which element the stress is put on. (i.e. action/verb, subject of the verb or object) Ex. Eng.-I want coffee. – Armenian-I coffee want. • Ex. Eng.-I want to eat the red apple. Ex. Armenian-I to eat want the red apple. Double Negative Ex. English-Nobody wants it. • Armenian-Nobody not wants it. Other Areas of Difficulty for Modern Eastern Armenian Speakers • MEA won’t have difficulty with the English l in late; but will with the l sound in bill • The sounds of English thy and thigh will be difficult because they do not exist in MEA. • The vowel sound in cat, caught, put, and the sound differentiation between beet/bit, should/shoed, bought/boat, bet/bat, cot/cat will cause problems because English has more vowel distinctions than MEA. Communication Style • Greetings • Men greeting men – handshake followed by a kiss on the cheek if close • Women greeting women – Hugs and kiss on the cheek • Men greeting women – Women need to wait until the men present their hand for the handshake. If they are a family friend, then a kiss on the cheek and a light hug are appropriate. Communication Style Continued • Personal Space & Touching • Tend to speak at a close distance • Touching is common if you know one another, except males and women no matter what the relationship is. • Direct eye contact is preferred • Hand gestures like thumbs up to express approval or shaking the shoulders to show indifference are accepted among friends, but considered impolite in public. Learning [Voice] Abstract The [voice] distinction between homorganic stops and fricatives is made by a number of acoustic correlates including voicing, segment duration, and preceding vowel duration. The present work looks at [voice] from a number of multidimensional perspectives. This dissertation's focus is a corpus study of the phonetic realization of [voice] in two English-learning infants aged 1;1--3;5. While preceding vowel duration has been studied before in infants, the other correlates of post-vocalic voicing investigated here --- preceding F1, consonant duration, and closure voicing intensity --- had not been measured before in infant speech. The study makes empirical contributions regarding the development of the production of [voice] in infants, not just from a surface- level perspective but also with implications for the phonetics-phonology interface in the adult and developing linguistic systems. Additionally, several methodological contributions will be made in the use of large sized corpora and data modeling techniques. The study revealed that even in infants, F1 at the midpoint of a vowel preceding a voiced consonant was lower by roughly 50 Hz compared to a vowel before a voiceless consonant, which is in line with the effect found in adults.

Haynes, Yao Yao, and Russell Rhodes* University of California, Berkeley 1 Introduction Though previous linguistic research has produced a wide range of scholarship on second language acquisition, the field has only begun to examine heritage lan- guage acquisition in its own right. The few studies that have focused on the pho- nological competence of heritage speakers – that is, speakers who have had expo- sure to a particular language as a child, but who have shifted to another language for the majority of their communication needs – have found that childhood expe- rience with a minority language, even if merely overhearing, provides a signifi- cant boost to a speaker’s pronunciation of the language later in life in comparison to late learners with no prior experience (cf. Au et al. 2002, Knightly et al. 2003 on Spanish; Oh et al. 2002, 2003 on Korean). The results of these studies, which include acoustic measures such as voice onset time, perceptual measures such as presence of lenition, and overall accent ratings, indicate that heritage speakers tend to have a phonological advantage over late learners in production of the her- itage language. Curiously, though, only Godson (2003) explicitly examined the question of categorical neutralization. Though heritage speakers may end up with better ac- cents than late learners overall, do they actually make all the phonological distinc- tions that a native speaker would? Furthermore, do they realize these contrasts in the same way and to the same degree? Godson found that for heritage speakers of Western Armenian, English appeared to have an influence on their pronunciation of Armenian vowels, but only for those Armenian vowels close to English vo- wels; furthermore, the influence did not necessarily neutralize contrasts.
