Preface The purpose of this note is to guide the reader through the current fascicle of the JLR containing a selection of pa- pers presented at the workshop “Beyond Lexicon: diachronic language contact on the structural and systemic level”. The workshop was convened by Federico Giusfredi and took place in Verona on 21-22 April 2017. This is an appropriate occasion to express gratitude to the convener and everyone who assisted him in the organization of this academic event. The papers published in this issue address contact phenomena that are widely spread across time and space. In geographic terms, we can describe the areas taken into account imagining lines stretching from Italy to the Le- vant and Near East in the south-west and from the Baltic to the Caspian Sea in the northeast, the Anatolian plateau remaining in the middle. The chronology spans from prehistory to the second millennium BC in the areas where Semitic and Indo-European languages came to be spoken, covers the period from the Middle Ages onward with the emphasis on Baltic, Slavic, and Uralic languages, while instances of contemporary contact are addressed with reference to three situations involving speech communities in Armenia, Belarus, and Italy. The study of language contact in and through Ancient Anatolia played a significant role in the agenda of the Verona workshop. This was not only due to the professional interests of its convener but also a consequence of the unusual richness of the available empirical data, compared with the situation in other regions in the second mil- lennium BC. This is why we must particularly welcome the paper by Paola Cotticelli and Federico Giusfredi, de- voted to this geochronological domain. The co-authors go beyond discussing what has been discovered, sug- gested, or hypothesized in terms of contacts between Anatolian early Greeks, or perhaps the substrate shared with the Greek language. The main contribution of this article lies in the domain of assessing the methods of the disci- pline, their terminology, past applications, and present outcomes. Cotticelli and Giusfredi plead for a research path delineated by the application of cross-linguistic typology of contact effects, specifically as it pertains to the ex- tinct languages. In particular, one should always keep in mind that intensive bilingualism represents a necessary prerequisite for contacts at the structural level. Therefore, if independent evidence for bi- or multilingualism is ab- sent, the hypothesis of structural interference should be carefully evaluated against alternative scenarios.     LINGUISTICA URALICA XLIII 2007 3 MARI METS (Tartu) SOUTH ESTONIAN WRITTEN STANDARD AND ACTUAL SPOKEN LANGUAGE: VARIATION OF THE PAST PARTICIPLE MARKERS* Abstract. The present article gives an overview of the past participle markers in spoken Võru; the variation of these markers exemplifies the (dis)similarities of the written standard and local spoken varieties. In regard to the active past participle -nuq/-nüq is standardised for the written norm, though today -nu/ -nü prevails in spoken language. For the passive past participle -t/-d is the singular marker and -tuq/-tüq/-duq/-düq marks the plural in the Võru written standard. Notwithstanding, the spoken variant suggests that nowadays there is no clear distinction between the singular and plural. Whereby, the present article aims to determine the validity of the historical number agreement in spoken language collected from the 1960s to the 1990s. The analysis is based on the texts (recorded between the 1960s and 1980s) available in the corpus of the Estonian dialects. The results are compared with the studies based on the 1990s recordings. The article demonstrates that the actual spoken language has lost some older South Estonian traits that have been standardised in the written variant. Introduction From the 16th to the early 20th century there were two literary languages in Estonia called the Tartu literary language (in South Estonia) and the Tallinn literary language (in North Estonia). During the second half of the 19th century the South Estonian literary language started a gradual decline because of the socio-political changes in the society, and the North Estonian literary language gained prominence.

Learning [Voice] Abstract The [voice] distinction between homorganic stops and fricatives is made by a number of acoustic correlates including voicing, segment duration, and preceding vowel duration. The present work looks at [voice] from a number of multidimensional perspectives. This dissertation's focus is a corpus study of the phonetic realization of [voice] in two English-learning infants aged 1;1--3;5. While preceding vowel duration has been studied before in infants, the other correlates of post-vocalic voicing investigated here --- preceding F1, consonant duration, and closure voicing intensity --- had not been measured before in infant speech. The study makes empirical contributions regarding the development of the production of [voice] in infants, not just from a surface- level perspective but also with implications for the phonetics-phonology interface in the adult and developing linguistic systems. Additionally, several methodological contributions will be made in the use of large sized corpora and data modeling techniques. The study revealed that even in infants, F1 at the midpoint of a vowel preceding a voiced consonant was lower by roughly 50 Hz compared to a vowel before a voiceless consonant, which is in line with the effect found in adults.

As a central place for teachings about language, grammar books contained orthographic instructions from the very beginning, and such practice continued also in later periods. Understanding the function, content, and orthographic forms in the past provides for a better description of the nature of the orthographic standard in the present. The evolution of grammatographic practice clearly shows the continuity of development of orthographic content from a constituent of grammar studies through the littera unit gradually to an independent unit, then into annexed orthographic sections, and later into separate orthographic manuals. 5 antique, 22 Latin, and 17 vernacular grammars were analyzed, describing 19 European languages. The research methodology is based on distinguishing orthographic content in the narrower sense (grapheme to meaning) from the broader sense (grapheme to phoneme). In this way, the function of orthographic description was established separately from the study of spelling. As for the traditional description of orthographic content in the broader sense in old grammar books, it is shown that orthographic content can also be studied within the grammatographic framework of a specific period, similar to the description of morphology or syntax.

Three prima facie counterexamples have come to light, found in Turkish, Lithuanian, and Sanskrit. We reex - amine these three cases and demonstrate that rather than counterexemplifying Perlmutter and Postal’s generalization, these confirm it. The Turkish construction is an impersonal of a passive, the Lithuanian is an evidential of a passive, and the Sanskrit is an unaccusative with an instru - mental case-marked theme. We provide a syntactic analysis of both the Turkish impersonal and the Lithuanian evidential. Introduction . In the 1970s and 1980s, Perlmutter and Postal (Perlmutter & Postal 1977, 1984, Perlmutter 1982, Postal 1986) argued that passive verbs cannot un - dergo passivization. Lakey Doctor of Philosophy Department of Linguistics March 2016 Title: The Grammar of Fear: Morphosyntactic Metaphor in Fear Constructions This analysis explores the reflection of semantic features of emotion verbs that are metaphorized on the morphosyntactic level in constructions that express these emotions. This dissertation shows how the avoidance or distancing response to fear is mirrored in the morphosyntax of fear constructions (FCs) in certain Indo-European languages through the use of non-canonical grammatical markers. This analysis looks at both simple FCs consisting of a single clause and complex FCs, which feature a subordinate clause that acts as a complement to the fear verb in the main clause. In simple FCs in some highly-inflected Indo-European languages, the complement of the fear verb (which represents the fear source) is case-marked not accusative but genitive (Baltic and Slavic languages, Sanskrit, Anglo-Saxon) or ablative (Armenian, Sanskrit, Old Persian).
