CATALOGUE WELCOME to NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS and NAXOS NOSTALGIA, Twin Compendiums Presenting the Best in Vintage Popular Music
NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS/NOSTALGIA CATALOGUE WELCOME TO NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS AND NAXOS NOSTALGIA, twin compendiums presenting the best in vintage popular music. Following in the footsteps of Naxos Historical, with its wealth of classical recordings from the golden age of the gramophone, these two upbeat labels put the stars of yesteryear back into the spotlight through glorious new restorations that capture their true essence as never before. NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS documents the most vibrant period in the history of jazz, from the swinging ’20s to the innovative ’40s. Boasting a formidable roster of artists who forever changed the face of jazz, Naxos Jazz Legends focuses on the true giants of jazz, from the fathers of the early styles, to the queens of jazz vocalists and the great innovators of the 1940s and 1950s. NAXOS NOSTALGIA presents a similarly stunning line-up of all-time greats from the golden age of popular entertainment. Featuring the biggest stars of stage and screen performing some of the best- loved hits from the first half of the 20th century, this is a real treasure trove for fans to explore. RESTORING THE STARS OF THE PAST TO THEIR FORMER GLORY, by transforming old 78 rpm recordings into bright-sounding CDs, is an intricate task performed for Naxos by leading specialist producer-engineers using state-of-the-art-equipment. With vast personal collections at their disposal, as well as access to private and institutional libraries, they ensure that only the best available resources are used. The records are first cleaned using special equipment, carefully centred on a heavy-duty turntable, checked for the correct playing speed (often not 78 rpm), then played with the appropriate size of precision stylus. -

LA VIE EN ROSE LIVIN’ and LOVIN’ with LOUIS ARMSTRONG
LA VIE EN ROSE LIVIN’ and LOVIN’ with LOUIS ARMSTRONG Words are completely inadequate when attempting to convey the spirit of Louis Armstrong to anyone unfamiliar with his genius. It is far better to learn about Armstrong, also known as Satchmo, Pops, Papa Dip, through his music. And yet, to define his accomplishment solely through music is to overlook the totality of his unique contributions to the world. There is much to discover when we widen our focus. Through his story, we can examine how technology can be used to document change through the lens of a single person’s life. His long career spans the timeline of developing media: print media, photography, sound recordings, radio and television broadcasting, and film. Even today his legacy is spread through developing new media. With Internet access, any student can get their daily dose of Satchmo through iTunes, YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter. Satchmo used every means possible to create and communicate, and he was truly a pioneer exploring new technologies. Armstrong was constantly recording his story, first with pen and paper, next using with his trusty typewriter to write memoirs, essays and letters. He took to lugging around a reel‐to‐reel tape recorder on tour. He tucked scissors and scotch tape in his pockets to make collages whenever he had a spare moment. He amassed a personal collection of 1,600 recordings, 650 home recorded tapes in hand‐decorated boxes, 5,000 photographs, and 86 scrapbooks. He was often the first African American performer to break through racial barriers — in radio programs, animated shorts, early soundies, television shows, commercial advertisements, and in full‐length feature films — in a time when people of color could not walk through the front door of many public establishments, sit in the front of the bus, or go to an integrated school. -
Eugene Hutz Interview
4 FEATURE FOLK ON THE EDGE As Gogol Bordello returns to Australia, singer Eugene Hutz warns a musical storm is coming, writes Jane Cornwell fter three decades in the rock busi- ness, Eugene Hutz knows how to make an entrance. I’m waiting in the mezzanine lounge of a west London hotel popular with music- Aians, nodding along to an 1980s chart hit sound- track, when the lanky, long-haired frontman suddenly appears at the top of the stairs, strum- ming a beat-up Cordoba acoustic and looking, as they say in Britain, the dog’s bollocks. He’s wearing a bomber jacket, a looped patterned scarf, a single gold hoop earring and a clutch of long gold necklaces; his tight black trousers have large white termites printed on them. His cheekbones are sharp, his eyes cobalt blue. His handlebar moustache curls at the corners. A man without a moustache is like a woman with one, goes an old Ukrainian saying that Hutz, who is Ukrainian, has confessed to making up. “Hallo,” he says in his thick Slavic-American accent, percussively slapping the body of his guitar, which is plastered in oval-shaped car stickers from Spain, Mexico, Britain, all over. “So it is you who will tell them we are coming.” Gogol Bordello was last in Australia in 2010 storytelling. Unsatisfaction Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Patti Smith
No sé cuánto llevo acostada. Empecé meditando (dizque shabassana, la postura del cadáver), me morí, me dormí, no sé qué pasó. Intento levantarme. -

Enrico Crolla “Henri”
1 The GUITAR of ENRICO CROLLA “HENRI” Solographers: Christian Dangleterre & Jan Evensmo Last update: June 20, 2020 2 Born: Napoli (Naples), Italy, Feb. 26, 1920 Died: Paris, Oct. 17, 1960 Introduction: What Oslo Jazz Circle knew about French jazz when I grew up there can be summed up with one name: Django Reinhardt. It took my good friend and guitarist Jon Larsen, the motor and godfather behind the string swing rejuvenation in the 1980s, to point out that France had so much more to offer with regard to jazz guitar. Henri Crolla is a perfect example! History: Born to a family of itinerant Neapolitan musicians, he moved with his family to Porte de Choisy in France 1922 following the rise of fascism in Italy. One of his neighbours was a young Django Reinhardt, with whose family he became close. He died in Paris from lung cancer (ref. Wikipedia). 3 HENRI CROLLA SOLOGRAPHY JOSEPH REINHARDT ET SON ENSEMBLE Paris, April 1944 Claude Laurence alias Andre Hodeir (vln), Joseph Reinhardt solo (g), G.Milpat alias Henri Crolla (g), Marcel Fabre (b), Pierre Fouad (dm), Odette Pacou (vo).
