Seven species taxa representing three genera are present in the northern Venezuelan Miocene assemblages, six are new to science; Hemipolygona snyderi nov. sp., Hemipoly- gona carrizalensis nov. sp., Polygona praeanapetes nov. sp., Polygona barbascoensis nov. sp., Polygona sepulcralis nov. sp. and Poly- gona buenevaraensis nov. sp. The presence of Pustulatirus tumbeziensis (Olsson, 1932) in the Cantaure Formation of Venezuela is con- firmed. For all three genera, Pustulatirus, Hemipolygona and Polygona these represent the earliest records in the Caribbean portion of the Tropical American Neogene Gatunian biogeographical province. Benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly included in studies to monitor the effects of human and natural stresses on marine and estuarine ecosystems. There are several reasons for this. Macroinvertebrates (here defined as animals retained on a 0.5-mm mesh sieve) are abundant in most coastal and estuarine sediments, typically on the order of 103 to 104 per meter squared. Benthic communities are typically composed of many taxa from different phyla, and quantitative measures of community diversity (e.g., Rosenberg et al. 2004) and the relative abundance of animals with different feeding behaviors (e.g., Weisberg et al. 1997, Pelletier et al. 2010), can be used to evaluate ecosystem health. Because most benthic invertebrates are sedentary as adults, they function as integrators, over periods of months to years, of the properties of their environment. -

Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study. -

El intermareal rocoso de Veracruz, México, es un ecosistema que resguarda una gran biodiversidad. Sin embargo, no se ha reconocido su relevancia como con otros ecosistemas marinos. El objetivo de este estudio fue elaborar las primeras listas florística y faunística del intermareal rocoso de El Pulpo, localizada en el municipio de Cazones, Veracruz. Para ello, desde el 2013 a 2016 se efectuaron muestreos en la franja intermareal rocosa en periodos de marea baja para el registro de la biota marina y la recolecta de material biológico para su identificación taxonómica. Además, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica para complementar las listas de especies. Se registraron 51 especies de macroalgas bentónicas, una especie de fanerógama, 186 especies de invertebrados, y cinco especies de vertebrados para un total de 243 especies marinas. Las Rhodophyta son la ficoflora más representada con 29 es- pecies, mientras que el Phylum Mollusca lo es para la fauna con 139 especies. La mayoría de las especies marinas se registraron en el intermareal medio e inferior; por consiguiente la menor riqueza se registró en el intermareal superior y la constituyen algas filamentosas y foliosas, así como moluscos y crustáceos con hábitos ramoneadores y filtradores. -

We investigated the larval vertical dis- tribution and abundance of 9 meroplanktonic gastropod taxa (Margarites spp., Crepidula spp., Astyris lunata, Diaphana minuta, Littorinimorpha, Arrhoges occidentalis, Ilyanassa spp., Bittiolum alternatum and Nudibranchia), with similar morphology and swimming abilities, but different adult habitats and life-history strategies. We explored the role of physical (temperature, salinity, density, current velocities) and biological (fluorescence) factors, as well as periodic cycles (lunar phase, tidal state, diel period) in regulating larval vertical distribution. Using a pump, we collected plankton samples at 6 depths (3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 m) at each tidal state, every 2 h over a 36 and a 26 h period, during a spring and neap tide, respectively, in St. George’s Bay, Nova Scotia. Living Seashells of the Tropical Indo-Pacific Photographic guide with 1500+ species covered Andrey Ryanskiy INTRODUCTION, COPYRIGHT, ACKNOWLEDGMENTS INTRODUCTION Seashell or sea shells are the hard exoskeleton of mollusks such as snails, clams, chitons. For most people, acquaintance with mollusks began with empty shells. These shells often delight the eye with a variety of shapes and colors. Conchology studies the mollusk shells and this science dates back to the 17th century. However, modern science - malacology is the study of mollusks as whole organisms. Today more and more people are interacting with ocean - divers, snorkelers, beach goers - all of them often find in the seas not empty shells, but live mollusks - living shells, whose appearance is significantly different from museum specimens. This book serves as a tool for identifying such animals. The book covers the region from the Red Sea to Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Guam. Columbella euterpe Melvill, 1892 de Bombay et Mitrella fimbriata Pelorce & Boyer, 2005 du Senegal sont transferees dans le genre Astyris et comparées avec la nouvelle espèce. ABSTRACT. A new species of Columbellidae of the genus Astyris is described from Masirah Island Sultanate of Oman. The inclusion of the new species in the genus Astyris is discussed. Columbella euterpe Melvill, 1892 from Bombay and Mitrella fimbriata Pelorce & Boyer, 2005 from Senegal are transferred in the genus Astyris and compared with the new species.
