Benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly included in studies to monitor the effects of human and natural stresses on marine and estuarine ecosystems. There are several reasons for this. Macroinvertebrates (here defined as animals retained on a 0.5-mm mesh sieve) are abundant in most coastal and estuarine sediments, typically on the order of 103 to 104 per meter squared. Benthic communities are typically composed of many taxa from different phyla, and quantitative measures of community diversity (e.g., Rosenberg et al. 2004) and the relative abundance of animals with different feeding behaviors (e.g., Weisberg et al. 1997, Pelletier et al. 2010), can be used to evaluate ecosystem health. Because most benthic invertebrates are sedentary as adults, they function as integrators, over periods of months to years, of the properties of their environment. -

The species were on sandy and rocky beaches, coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangroves, rocky breakwaters of ports, and shallow subtidal areas (14–47 m depth). A total of 78 bivalve species and 82 gastropod species were recorded. Most of these were associated with sandy and rocky beaches and breakwaters of ports. The estuaries host 30 species and the coastal lagoons only two. In the shallow subtidal there were 18 gastropod species and 40 bivalve species representing 36.3% of all. This study adds 24 bivalve species and 29 gastropod species not recorded in previous studies for a total count of 213 species (102 bivalves and 111 gastropods) for Gulf of Tehuantepec. -

La distinción taxonómica es una medida de diversidad que presenta una serie de ventajas que dan connotación relevante a la ecología teórica y aplicada. La utilidad de este tipo de medida como otro método para evaluar la biodiversidad de los ecosistemas marinos bentónicos de fondos blandos del Golfo de Batabanó (Cuba) se comprobó mediante el uso de los índices de distinción taxonómica promedio (Delta+) y la variación en la distinción taxonómica (Lambda+) de las comunidades de moluscos. Para este propósito, se utilizaron los inventarios de especies de moluscos bentónicos de fondos blandos obtenidos en el periodo 1981-1985 y en los años 2004 y 2007. Ambos listados de especies fueron analizados y comparados a escala espacial y temporal. La composición taxonómica entre el periodo y años estudiados se conformó de 3 clases, 20 órdenes, 60 familias, 137 géneros y 182 especies, observándose, excepto en el nivel de clase, una disminución no significativa de esta composición en 2004 y 2007. A escala espacial se detectó una disminución significativa en la riqueza taxonómica en el 2004. No se detectaron diferencias significativas en Delta+ y Lambda+ a escala temporal, pero si a escala espacial, hecho que se puede atribuir al efecto combinado del incremento de las actividades antropogénicas en la región con los efectos inducidos por los huracanes. -

Here gonad develop- ment in a population with few anthropogenic pressures is evaluated and the timing and succession of developmental stages, the sex ratio, and condition of the animals described. -

November-December, 2018_____________________________________________________Volume 59 (no. 6) Upcoming meetings The November meeting of the Jacksonville Shell Club (JSC) will be held at the usual venue, the Southeast Branch of the Jacksonville Public Library <http://www.yelp.com/biz/jacksonville-public-library-southeast- regional-jacksonville>, on the third Thursday (the 15th) in Function Room D at 7:00 PM. Thanksgiving necessitated this annual JSC exception several decades ago forcing the club to meet on the third Thursday of this month rather than the customary fourth. We’re in for a treat on the ocassion as Rick Edwards, travelling with his lovely wife, Roz, has recently returned from a trip to Ecuador and Peru, notably including a tour of the Galápagos Islands. Although shell collectng is strictly forbidden, Rick and Roz were able to otherwise appreciate many species of marine mollusks and chronicle them in situ. A signficant proportion of the the Galapagan marine malacofauna is endemic, and another share is compposed on Indo-West Pacific interlopers. Thus the mix is quite unlike the more familiar continental Panamic Province assemblages. Harry Lee will provide a look at some classic shell rarities associated with the islands. These were obtaned by dredging in a bygone era when such activities were licit, so beware of an aura of nostalgia in the room. Two such classic shells are those above: Sveltia gladiator (R. Petit, 1976) above L and Sthenorhytis turbina (Dall, 1908) above R. The December JSC meeting will be in the field on Saturday the 22nd. Paul Jones [[email protected]; (904) 347-7254] has arranged with Connie of Tidewater Tours, Cedar Key, a three-hour "drop off" shelling trip to a shoal off Seahorse Key, about five miles offshore. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Species of Parvanachis Radwin, 1968 collected from the Gulf of Panama are anatomically characterized and taxonomi- cally revised. Six species are reported to occur in the region: P. pygmaea (Sowerby, 1832), P. pardalis (Hinds, 1843), P. diminuta (C.B. Adams, 1852), P. albonodosa (Carpenter, 1857), P. milium (Dall, 1916), and P. dalli Bartsch, 1931. Of these six, three are confirmed as described. P. milium was not found in new collections or the previous survey collection and may be more common further south. P. dalli is a synonym of P. pygmaea; and P. albonodosa (auct.) is renamed, be- cause the type material represents a different species. Two new species are described, P. di c h ro m a and P. adamsi. P. parda- lis, based on anatomy and shell and radular morphology, is referred to the genus Anachis, and Costoanachis nigricans (Sowerby, 1844), based on anatomy and shell morphology, is transferred to Parvanachis. The resulting seven species of Parvanachis constitute two groups; one (including the type species) with smaller shells and a simple penis morphology, and a group of four larger species with more complex penis morphology. -
The Macrofauna Associated with the Bryozoan Schizoporella Errata (Walters) in Southeastern Brazil*

SUMMARY: The invertebrate fauna associated with colonies of the bryozoan Schizoporella errata was studied at two sites differing in hydrodynamism in southeastern Brazil. Patterns of species distribution, abundance, and diversity were similar at both sites. Polychaetes dominated the assemblages, both in number of individuals and species, with 70 species distributed in 20 families. Decapod crustaceans were also abundant, mainly anomuran crabs and caridean shrimps. Cluster analysis sep- arated the samples from each site, and further analysis indicated that an interaction between water movement and trophic structure could explain these differences. At the site with low water movement, more muddy sediments were found inside the colonies, and a greater proportion of deposit-feeders was found. At the other site, higher hydrodynamism resulted in less sediments within the colonies, and favoured the occurrence of more filter-feeders. The trophic structure of faunal assem- blages can help understand the structure of assemblages associated with biogenic substrata, as already demonstrated for ben- thic communities.
