The Kerala rivers are small, in length, width and water discharge. Rivers flow faster, because of the hilly terrain and as a short distance between the and the sea. All rivers are completely monsoonal, and many of them are compressed into rivulets or completely dry during the summer. The Western Flowing River is a list of the rivers flowing west to Kerala in southern India, in order of length, and their tributaries. All these rivers originate in the western range of the Ghat and enter to the west in the backwaters of Kerala or in the . The length in kilometers is in brackets. The short length of the rivers, combined with a very high population density (more than 30 million people living on an area of 38,000 sq km), creates a high dependence on water and the susceptibility of rivers to environmental onslaughts. In the six major rivers represented in the Status Report, we discuss biodiversity in mature upper catchments and low-lying wetlands. Overall, the southern region of Western Ghats with catchments including many of Kerala's main riers, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has the highest freshwater species richness (260-312 species) and endemicism (103-129 species), with a particularly unique variety of fish in the Chaalcute and Periyar rivers. In rivers like Bharatapuja, of the 6,000 odd sq km of catchment, just 100 sq km has pristine forests in the Kunthipuzha catchment, a lifeline of summer river flows. The Wembarad-Kol wetlands, the largest estuarin system in India, feed on 10 rivers. It supports various livelihoods - below sea level paddy wagons, fishing, coir retting, to name a few. Wetlands provide flood protection in densely populated coastal areas and contribute to groundwater replenishment. Our rivers are under pressure from man-made activity. Water shortages in many parts of the state can be attributed to high rainwater runoff and loss of forest cover in upper catchment areas, rather than sand mining and land reclamation and rice paddies. The conversion of catchments, including large-scale deforestation and plantation crops, has changed the hydrological regime and increased silt movement - reducing water yields in the catchment, affecting groundwater recharge and summer flow in rivers, with some of the perennial rivers and rivers becoming seasonal in the past few decades. The state's forests are threatened by notification of development plans and expansion to promote recreational and religious tourism activities in the upper catchments of the Chalakuda and Pamba rivers, respectively. Even with the Sand Mining Regulation Act (2001), mindless sand mining continues in all Kerala rivers. continues to grow despite environmental organizations raising alerts. In the Pamba River, for example, the unregulated activities of pilgrims are experiencing the glaring effects of pollution. Health issues related to toxic pollution in Elora - Edair section of the Periyar River is repeatedly seen reported pushing Periyar into the Red Book we have prepared. Dams in Kerala have flooded vast swathes of local areas and forests. The river flows of Periyar, Chalakudy, Bharatapuji, Siruwani and Neyara were redirected to interstate and interstate sabotage. Kerala has 12 large hydropower plants and several small hydropower projects. The total installed capacity of the main schemes, including their expansion, is 1968.75 MW and the PPP is 107.4 MW. In the dams of Parambikulam, Sholayar, Mullaperiyar and Izukka, the river does not flow long before it is joined by the next tributary or recharging from the catchment. The new threats include the Atirappilli HE project, the Puyamkuta GE and Patrakkadawa project, which have not been officially abandoned by the Kerala government and KSEBL. Pandiyar-Punnampuzha HEP and NW-3 or 205 km west coast channel are two other far-fetched suggestions. Pamba Achenkovil Vaipar Link (PAVLP) provides for the diversion of 634 microns of water from these two rivers into the Water Basin Of Waipar: three PAVLP dams will flood 1,398 hectares of pristine forests and will greatly alter the ecology of Vemabnad. From the eastern flowing rivers, we see cabins. Protecting the 1920 sq km catchment is crucial for restoring flows in the Cowvery Basin. Smaller rivers in Kerala like those that originate from side hills in northern Kerala such as Kariangode and Kavvayi face pressure from side mining in hills, real estate and monoculture of keshih plantations and rubber affecting replenishment in sideside hills. Karamana, the main artery of the city of Trivandarum, is threatened by pollution, encroachment and sand mining. With the exception of Vamanapuram, the flow in all southern Rivers of Kerala is regulated by dams. The culture of the riverbank is closely intertwined in Kerala, as most of the population has settled near the river, canal or backwater. The historical and cultural narrative we present traces early civilizations, wars and trade links, pioneer development initiatives in the British era and traditional farming practices in Kerala, in addition to cultural aspects such as temple festivals, boat races and folk rituals. We recommend that the six rivers discussed in detail in this report - Chalyar, Bharatapuja, Chalakudy, Periyar, Pamba, Cabins - should be closed in the Red Book on the basis of issues relating to them. This is not to discount the problems faced by other rivers, but to help concerted efforts to effectively Rivers. The government has shown interest in the idea of the idea River basin/organization bodies for more management. Planning for the entire river basin should be fully decentralized, a process of planning and implementation. We recommend a strategy for reviving degraded rivers. Report by Manju Vasudevan notes: - This report was commissioned for India Rivers Week 2016. The Kerala drainage map was created by a WWF team led by G Areendran, and the river names were provided by the INTACH team led by Dr. Manu Bhatnagar. Names in brackets represent key tributaries; Red for (critical) status; BLUE for (Safe) status and the rest of PINK (threatened) status.
