Fast Trains Support Illinois Colleges Include passenger rail expansion in capital bill Amtrak and Metra trains already play an important role in supporting higher education. Faster and more frequent trains would expand that role. Existing state rail and transit plans list projects that would create a web of connectivity throughout the state. It is time to coordinate and funds those plans to support higher education: • More attractive to students: A convenient and affordable trip by train would make in- state colleges more attractive to Illinois residents over a long drive to out-of-state schools. • Student Safety: Less potential for sleepy (or intoxicated) weekend drives home • Staff retention: Improved access to statewide amentities and employment opportunities to spouses would make it easier to attract and retain professors and staff. • Reduced operating costs: More trains (and buses) means fewer cars on campus, and a reduction in their carrying costs.
