												Enhancing Self-Reflection and Mathematics Achievement of At-Risk Urban Technical College Students

Zimmerman1, Adam Moylan2, John Hudesman3, Niesha White3, & Bert Flugman3 Abstract A classroom-based intervention study sought to help struggling learners respond to their academic grades in math as sources of self-regulated learning (SRL) rather than as indices of personal limita- tion. Technical college students (N = 496) in developmental (remedial) math or introductory col- lege-level math courses were randomly assigned to receive SRL instruction or conventional in- struction (control) in their respective courses. SRL instruction was hypothesized to improve stu- dents’ math achievement by showing them how to self-reflect (i.e., self-assess and adapt to aca- demic quiz outcomes) more effectively. The results indicated that students receiving self-reflection training outperformed students in the control group on instructor-developed examinations and were better calibrated in their task-specific self-efficacy beliefs before solving problems and in their self- evaluative judgments after solving problems. Self-reflection training also increased students’ pass- rate on a national gateway examination in mathematics by 25% in comparison to that of control students. 												Reflection Invariant and Symmetry Detection
1 Reflection Invariant and Symmetry Detection Erbo Li and Hua Li Abstract—Symmetry detection and discrimination are of fundamental meaning in science, technology, and engineering. This paper introduces reflection invariants and defines the directional moments(DMs) to detect symmetry for shape analysis and object recognition. And it demonstrates that detection of reflection symmetry can be done in a simple way by solving a trigonometric system derived from the DMs, and discrimination of reflection symmetry can be achieved by application of the reflection invariants in 2D and 3D. Rotation symmetry can also be determined based on that. Also, if none of reflection invariants is equal to zero, then there is no symmetry. And the experiments in 2D and 3D show that all the reflection lines or planes can be deterministically found using DMs up to order six. This result can be used to simplify the efforts of symmetry detection in research areas,such as protein structure, model retrieval, reverse engineering, and machine vision etc. Index Terms—symmetry detection, shape analysis, object recognition, directional moment, moment invariant, isometry, congruent, reflection, chirality, rotation F 1 INTRODUCTION Kazhdan et al. In this paper, the notion of equitable partitions (EP) is used to study the eigenvalues of Euclidean distance matrices (EDMs). In particular, EP is used to obtain the characteristic poly- nomials of regular EDMs and non-spherical centrally symmetric EDMs. The paper also presents methods for constructing cospectral EDMs and EDMs with exactly three distinct eigenvalues. BASES FOR INFINITE DIMENSIONAL VECTOR SPACES MATH 513 LINEAR ALGEBRA SUPPLEMENT Professor Karen E. Smith We have proven that every finitely generated vector space has a basis. But what about vector spaces that are not finitely generated, such as the space of all continuous real valued functions on the interval [0; 1]? Does such a vector space have a basis? By definition, a basis for a vector space V is a linearly independent set which generates V . But we must be careful what we mean by linear combinations from an infinite set of vectors. The definition of a vector space gives us a rule for adding two vectors, but not for adding together infinitely many vectors. By successive additions, such as (v1 + v2) + v3, it makes sense to add any finite set of vectors, but in general, there is no way to ascribe meaning to an infinite sum of vectors in a vector space. Therefore, when we say that a vector space V is generated by or spanned by an infinite set of vectors fv1; v2;::: g, we mean that each vector v in V is a finite linear combination λi1 vi1 + ··· + λin vin of the vi's. Likewise, an infinite set of vectors fv1; v2;::: g is said to be linearly independent if the only finite linear combination of the vi's that is zero is the trivial linear combination. So a set fv1; v2; v3;:::; g is a basis for V if and only if every element of V can be be written in a unique way as a finite linear combination of elements from the set. -

Determinants Math 122 Calculus III D Joyce, Fall 2012 What they are. A determinant is a value associated to a square array of numbers, that square array being called a square matrix. For example, here are determinants of a general 2 × 2 matrix and a general 3 × 3 matrix. a b = ad − bc: c d a b c d e f = aei + bfg + cdh − ceg − afh − bdi: g h i The determinant of a matrix A is usually denoted jAj or det (A). You can think of the rows of the determinant as being vectors. For the 3×3 matrix above, the vectors are u = (a; b; c), v = (d; e; f), and w = (g; h; i). Then the determinant is a value associated to n vectors in Rn. There's a general definition for n×n determinants. It's a particular signed sum of products of n entries in the matrix where each product is of one entry in each row and column. The two ways you can choose one entry in each row and column of the 2 × 2 matrix give you the two products ad and bc. There are six ways of chosing one entry in each row and column in a 3 × 3 matrix, and generally, there are n! ways in an n × n matrix. Thus, the determinant of a 4 × 4 matrix is the signed sum of 24, which is 4!, terms. In this general definition, half the terms are taken positively and half negatively. In class, we briefly saw how the signs are determined by permutations. -

Algebraic Number Theory William B. Hart Warwick Mathematics Institute Abstract. We give a short introduction to algebraic number theory. Algebraic number theory is the study of extension fields Q(α1; α2; : : : ; αn) of the rational numbers, known as algebraic number fields (sometimes number fields for short), in which each of the adjoined complex numbers αi is algebraic, i.e. the root of a polynomial with rational coefficients. Throughout this set of notes we use the notation Z[α1; α2; : : : ; αn] to denote the ring generated by the values αi. It is the smallest ring containing the integers Z and each of the αi. It can be described as the ring of all polynomial expressions in the αi with integer coefficients, i.e. the ring of all expressions built up from elements of Z and the complex numbers αi by finitely many applications of the arithmetic operations of addition and multiplication. The notation Q(α1; α2; : : : ; αn) denotes the field of all quotients of elements of Z[α1; α2; : : : ; αn] with nonzero denominator, i.e. the field of rational functions in the αi, with rational coefficients. It is the smallest field containing the rational numbers Q and all of the αi.
