Formal power series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formal_power_series Formal power series From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In mathematics, formal power series are a generalization of polynomials as formal objects, where the number of terms is allowed to be infinite; this implies giving up the possibility to substitute arbitrary values for indeterminates. This perspective contrasts with that of power series, whose variables designate numerical values, and which series therefore only have a definite value if convergence can be established. Formal power series are often used merely to represent the whole collection of their coefficients. In combinatorics, they provide representations of numerical sequences and of multisets, and for instance allow giving concise expressions for recursively defined sequences regardless of whether the recursion can be explicitly solved; this is known as the method of generating functions. An introduction to Skolem's p-adic method for solving Diophantine equations Josha Box July 3, 2014 Bachelor thesis Supervisor: dr. Sander Dahmen Korteweg-de Vries Instituut voor Wiskunde Faculteit der Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Informatica Universiteit van Amsterdam Abstract In this thesis, an introduction to Skolem's p-adic method for solving Diophantine equa- tions is given. The main theorems that are proven give explicit algorithms for computing bounds for the amount of integer solutions of special Diophantine equations of the kind f(x; y) = 1, where f 2 Z[x; y] is an irreducible form of degree 3 or 4 such that the ring of integers of the associated number field has one fundamental unit. In the first chapter, an introduction to algebraic number theory is presented, which includes Minkovski's theorem and Dirichlet's unit theorem. An introduction to p-adic numbers is given in the second chapter, ending with the proof of the p-adic Weierstrass preparation theorem. The theory of the first two chapters is then used to apply Skolem's method in Chapter 3. Chapter 1 The Field of Reals and Beyond Our goal with this section is to develop (review) the basic structure that character- izes the set of real numbers. Much of the material in the ¿rst section is a review of properties that were studied in MAT108 however, there are a few slight differ- ences in the de¿nitions for some of the terms. Rather than prove that we can get from the presentation given by the author of our MAT127A textbook to the previous set of properties, with one exception, we will base our discussion and derivations on the new set. As a general rule the de¿nitions offered in this set of Compan- ion Notes will be stated in symbolic form this is done to reinforce the language of mathematics and to give the statements in a form that clari¿es how one might prove satisfaction or lack of satisfaction of the properties. Properties of Real Numbers There are four binary operations which take a pair of real numbers and result in another real number: Addition (+), Subtraction (−), Multiplication (× or ·), Division (÷ or /). These operations satisfy a number of rules. In the following, we assume a, b, c ∈ R. (In other words, a, b and c are all real numbers.) • Closure: a + b ∈ R, a · b ∈ R. This means we can add and multiply real num- bers. We can also subtract real numbers and we can divide as long as the denominator is not 0. • Commutative Law: a + b = b + a, a · b = b · a. This means when we add or multiply real num- bers, the order doesn’t matter. • Associative Law: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c), (a · b) · c = a · (b · c). We can thus write a + b + c or a · b · c without having to worry that different people will get different results. • Distributive Law: a · (b + c) = a · b + a · c, (a + b) · c = a · c + b · c. The distributive law is the one law which in- volves both addition and multiplication. -

NONCOMMUTATIVE NETWORKS ON A CYLINDER S. ARTHAMONOV, N. OVENHOUSE, AND M. SHAPIRO Abstract. In this paper a double quasi Poisson bracket in the sense of Van den Bergh is constructed on the space of noncommutative weights of arcs of a directed graph embedded in a disk or cylinder Σ, which gives rise to the quasi Poisson bracket of G.Massuyeau and V.Turaev on the group algebra kπ1(Σ,p) of the fundamental group of a surface based at p ∈ ∂Σ. This bracket also induces a noncommutative Goldman Poisson bracket on the cyclic space C♮, which is a k-linear space of unbased loops. We show that the induced double quasi Poisson bracket between boundary measurements can be described via noncommutative r-matrix formalism. This gives a more conceptual proof of the result of [Ove20] that traces of powers of Lax operator form an infinite collection of noncommutative Hamiltonians in involution with respect to noncommutative Goldman bracket on C♮. 1. Introduction The current manuscript is obtained as a continuation of papers [Ove20, FK09, DF15, BR11] where the authors develop noncommutative generalizations of discrete completely integrable dynamical systems and [BR18] where a large class of noncommutative cluster algebras was constructed. Cluster algebras were introduced in [FZ02] by S.Fomin and A.Zelevisnky in an effort to describe the (dual) canonical basis of universal enveloping algebra U(b), where b is a Borel subalgebra of a simple complex Lie algebra g. Cluster algebras are commutative rings of a special type, equipped with a distinguished set of generators (cluster variables) subdivided into overlapping subsets (clusters) of the same cardinality subject to certain polynomial relations (cluster transformations). -

We first explore operads in the category of sets, and then generalize to other familiar categories. Finally, we develop tools to construct operads via generators and relations, and provide several examples of operads in various categories. For instance, the addition of real numbers, composition of functions, and concatenation of strings are all associative operations with an identity element. In other words, all three are examples of monoids. Using March Madness in the first Linear Algebra course Steve Hilbert Ithaca College [email protected] Background • National meetings • Tim Chartier • 1 hr talk and special session on rankings • Try something new Why use this application? • This is an example that many students are aware of and some are interested in. • Interests a different subgroup of the class than usual applications • Interests other students (the class can talk about this with their non math friends) • A problem that students have “intuition” about that can be translated into Mathematical ideas • Outside grading system and enforcer of deadlines (Brackets “lock” at set time.) How it fits into Linear Algebra • Lots of “examples” of ranking in linear algebra texts but not many are realistic to students. • This was a good way to introduce and work with matrix algebra. • Using matrix algebra you can easily scale up to work with relatively large systems. Filling out your bracket • You have to pick a winner for each game • You can do this any way you want • Some people use their “ knowledge” • I know Duke is better than Florida, or Syracuse lost a lot of games at the end of the season so they will probably lose early in the tournament • Some people pick their favorite schools, others like the mascots, the uniforms, the team tattoos… Why rank teams? • If two teams are going to play a game ,the team with the higher rank (#1 is higher than #2) should win. • If there are a limited number of openings in a tournament, teams with higher rankings should be chosen over teams with lower rankings. -
Introduction to the P-Adic Space
Introduction to the p-adic Space Joel P. Abraham October 25, 2017 1 Introduction From a young age, students learn fundamental operations with the real numbers: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. We intuitively understand that distance under the reals as the absolute value function, even though we never have had a fundamental introduction to set theory or number theory. As such, I found this topic to be extremely captivating, since it almost entirely reverses the intuitive notion of distance in the reals. Such a small modification to the definition of distance gives rise to a completely different set of numbers under which the typical axioms are false. Furthermore, this is particularly interesting since the p-adic system commonly appears in natural phenomena. Due to the versatility of this metric space, and its interesting uniqueness, I find the p-adic space a truly fascinating development in algebraic number theory, and thus chose to explore it further. 2 The p-adic Metric Space 2.1 p-adic Norm Definition 2.1. Factorization Theory in Commutative Monoids 11
FACTORIZATION THEORY IN COMMUTATIVE MONOIDS ALFRED GEROLDINGER AND QINGHAI ZHONG Abstract. This is a survey on factorization theory. We discuss finitely generated monoids (including affine monoids), primary monoids (including numerical monoids), power sets with set addition, Krull monoids and their various generalizations, and the multiplicative monoids of domains (including Krull domains, rings of integer-valued polynomials, orders in algebraic number fields) and of their ideals. We offer examples for all these classes of monoids and discuss their main arithmetical finiteness properties. These describe the structure of their sets of lengths, of the unions of sets of lengths, and their catenary degrees. We also provide examples where these finiteness properties do not hold. 1. Introduction Factorization theory emerged from algebraic number theory. The ring of integers of an algebraic number field is factorial if and only if it has class number one, and the class group was always considered as a measure for the non-uniqueness of factorizations. Factorization theory has turned this idea into concrete results. In 1960 Carlitz proved (and this is a starting point of the area) that the ring of integers is half-factorial (i.e., all sets of lengths are singletons) if and only if the class number is at most two. In the 1960s Narkiewicz started a systematic study of counting functions associated with arithmetical properties in rings of integers. Starting in the late 1980s, theoretical properties of factorizations were studied in commutative semigroups and in commutative integral domains, with a focus on Noetherian and Krull domains (see [40, 45, 62]; [3] is the first in a series of papers by Anderson, Anderson, Zafrullah, and [1] is a conference volume from the 1990s).
