The littoral fauna of Provincetown and vicinity is therefore less rich in species than a more diverse region w ould everth l m be. N e ess a ore diligent search than has hitherto been insti tuted would undoubtedly result in the finding of many species additional

The localities examined in 1 8 79 were about as follows : The inner m on beach of the cape in front of the town of Provincetown , fro the dike the south to Wood End on the north and from high -water to low - water m ineludin - off ark , g the eel grass areas lying directly the beach and the broad sand - flats in front of and behind it; the inner beach at Long

Point ; the piles of the wharves, especially those at the ends of the long m l Wood stea boat and rai road wharves and the outer beaches at End,

Only a few specimens of small size were obtained from the eel - grass in various places . The scarcity of this species at Provincetown is prob

m - ably due to the absence of rocks and of uch rock weed , which together m for its favorite grounds . A comparison of E ur opean with American m speci ens has enabled Professor Smith to establish t he identity of G . ornatus and G . locusta.
