Pottery from Roman Malta
Cover Much of what is known about Malta’s ancient material culture has come to light as a result of antiquarian research or early archaeological work – a time where little attention Anastasi MALTA ARCHAEOLOGICAL REVIEW SUPPLEMENT 1 was paid to stratigraphic context. This situation has in part contributed to the problem of reliably sourcing and dating Maltese Roman-period pottery, particularly locally produced forms common on nearly all ancient Maltese sites. Pottery from Roman Malta presents a comprehensive study of Maltese pottery forms from key stratified deposits spanning the first century BC to mid-fourth century AD. Ceramic material from three Maltese sites was analysed and quantified in a bid to understand Maltese pottery production during the Roman period, and trace the type and volume of ceramic-borne goods that were circulating the central Mediterranean during the period. A short review of the islands’ recent literature on Roman pottery is discussed, followed by a detailed Pottery from Roman Malta contextual summary of the archaeological contexts presented in this study. The work is supplemented by a detailed illustrated catalogue of all the forms identified within the assemblages, presenting the wide range of locally produced and imported pottery types typical of the Maltese Roman period. Maxine Anastasi is a Lecturer at the Department of Classics and Archaeology, University of Malta. She was awarded a DPhil in Archaeology from the University of Oxford for her dissertation on small-island economies in the Central Mediterranean. Her research primarily focuses on Roman pottery in the central Mediterranean, with a particular Malta from Roman Pottery emphasis on Maltese assemblages. -

University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, 2010 This paper provides a concise analysis of the Gorgon image as it has been featured on temples throughout the Greek world. The Gorgons, also known as Medusa and her two sisters, were common decorative motifs on temples beginning in the eighth century B.C. and reaching their peak of popularity in the sixth century B.C. Their image has been found to decorate various parts of the temple across Sicily, Southern Italy, Crete, and the Greek mainland. By analyzing the city in which the image was found, where on the temple the Gorgon was depicted, as well as stylistic variations, significant differences in these images were identified. While many of the Gorgon icons were used simply as decoration, others, such as those used as antefixes or in pediments may have been utilized as apotropaic devices to ward off evil. iii Acknowledgements I would first like to thank my family and friends for all of their encouragement throughout this project. The Antikythera Mechanism, Rhodes, and Epeiros Paul Iversen Introduction I am particularly honored to be asked to contribute to this Festschrift in honor of James Evans. For the last nine years I have been engaged in studying the Games Dial and the calendar on the Metonic Spiral of the Antikythera Mechanism,1 and in that time I have come to admire James’s willingness to look at all sides of the evidence, and the way in which he conducts his research in an atmosphere of collaborative and curious inquiry combined with mutual respect. It has long been suggested that the Antikythera Mechanism may have been built on the is- land of Rhodes,2 one of the few locations attested in ancient literary sources associated with the production of such celestial devices. This paper will strengthen the thesis of a Rhodian origin for the Mechanism by demonstrating that the as-of-2008-undeciphered set of games in Year 4 on the Games Dial were the Halieia of Rhodes, a relatively minor set of games that were, appro- priately for the Mechanism, in honor of the sun-god, Helios (spelled Halios by the Doric Greeks). This paper will also summarize an argument that the calendar on the Metonic Spiral cannot be that of Syracuse, and that it is, contrary to the assertions of a prominent scholar in Epirote stud- ies, consistent with the Epirote calendar. This, coupled with the appearance of the extremely minor Naan games on the Games Dial, suggests that the Mechanism also had some connection with Epeiros. The Games Dial and the Halieia of Rhodes The application in the fall of 2005 of micro-focus X-ray computed tomography on the 82 surviv- ing fragments of the Antikythera Mechanism led to the exciting discovery and subsequent publi- cation in 2008 of a dial on the Antikythera Mechanism listing various athletic games now known as the Olympiad Dial (but which I will call the Games or Halieiad Dial—more on that below), as well as a hitherto unknown Greek civil calendar on what is now called the Metonic Spiral.3 I begin with my own composite drawing of the Games Dial (Fig. -

It is here that much of ancient history, perhaps history world, occurred. Here in the heart of Mediterranean is where flourishing but ephemeral civilisations crossed and clashed. Our invitation to Sicily is to discover the many faces of the island-of-the-islands or the island-not island, or the island-nation or finally the island-universe. Therefore, our invitation is to discover …. … 1000 kilometres of coastline: now very white and dazzling cliffs, such as the “Scala dei Turchi”, then intimate coves, sometimes refuges for turtles, such as Calamosche; now black cliffs, such as those at the foot of Mount Etna, then sandy beaches such as beaches of Ragusa, S. Vito, Catania or Portorosa … volcanoes, those hyperactive such as Mount Etna and Stromboli and the dormant ones, such as Vulcano and so many others … an endless archaeological heritage, at least 100 sites: 40% of national heritage and 10% of mondial heritage … extraordinary historic city centres of the baroque cities, largely UNESCO sites, such as Catania, Noto, Ortigia, Ibla, Trapani and many others, often animated by a lively nightlife … the parks of Etna, of the Madonie, of the Nebrodi and the many nature reserves such as the Simeto, Pantalica, Vendicari, Zingaro, Ciane or Anapo ones. -
