SCHEDULES AND PACKAGES CAN BE CUSTOMIZED FOLLOWING YOUR REQUESTS AND NEEDS DAY 1: Arrival at Catania Airport, meet the assistant, individual transfer to Palazzolo Acreide where a typical historical structure will welcome us followed by a typical dinner at a local trattoria. DAY 2: breakfast at a local pasticceria with cannolo siciliano class, full day dedicated to the visit of Palazzolo Acreide (part of the UNESCO, the most beautiful burg in Italy, Slow Food town): visit to the town center and its marvelous churches S. Paolo, S. Sebastiano, dell’Annunziata. Lunch is an open air barbeque with local meats from local farms. Visit to the archeological area of the ancient greek polis of Akrai 663 B.C. with smallest greek theater in the world, latomie with bassorilievo from the first century A.D, and visit to the archeological museum of Barone Gabriele Judica. Night Aperitif and free time (traditional walk through the main street of the town: “lo struscio”. DAY 3: homemade breakfast with fresh ricotta and fresh milk from a local farm, we will visit the cheese production locations and we will learn how to make a caciotta with our own hands. Visit to local bio olive oil production place, really famous all over the world “Tonda Iblea”. Visit to the ancient Pantalica, last Sicilian reign and the beautiful natural reserve of the “macchia mediterranea”. Short break to taste the local arancino and visit of the town of Ferla with its rare churches. Back to Palazzolo, we will go for a local aperitif at night followed by free time (and card games to learn a local ancient game!). DAY 4: breakfast at a local pasticceria, and full day dedicated to the sea. Visit of the Vendicari, a marvelous reserve with the ruins of an ancient tuna fish boat. Walk through Marzamemi, an ancient small fish town, famous for its tuna preparation, and visit to the local tuna fish production location. Free lunch (we can suggest a local restaurant of “friends of friends” with a spectacular view of the sea). Tour of Portopalo di Capo Passero where two seas meet and short stop at Avola town, famous for its wine Nero d’Avola and the almonds. Back to Palazzolo and free dinner. DAY 5: breakfast at a local pasticceria, tour of the town, Buscemi Museum telling the life of the old town farmers. Visit to the old Santa Lucia Mill and Antonino Uccello Museum, a professor who was in love with his land. Lunch at a local trattoria. Afternoon dedicated to the splendid Siracusa with guided tour and night show of Pupi Siciliani in Ortigia. Free time in Ortigia to explore the small streets of the ancient neighborhoods. Back to Palazzolo. DAY 6: breakfast at a local pasticceria and walk to the Bauly Wood to go hunting for truffles. The famous Black truffle of Palazzolo, followed by a cooking class led by a local chef with final lunch. Free afternoon. Back to Palazzolo Acreide and dinner with the Mayor of Palazzolo who will award you with the “citizen friend of Palazzolo Acreide” title. DAY 7: breakfast at a local pasticceria with free gifts for our guests, transfer to the Airport in Catania. .

    Santa Cecilia 2008 now is DOC Noto If we imagine Santa Cecilia to be like a ship that has sailed for twelve years to reach Sicily, then here with the 2008 vintage and the new DOC Noto , we can imagine that the ship has found a mooring in the most beautiful and safest harbour that exists; also full of history, appeal and tradition. At last we can use the DOC Noto , thanks to which we can place on the label the name which represents the chosen territory of Nero d’Avola , the noble grape from which this wine is wholly produced. The new disciplinary of the DOC Noto was completed in January 2008 and was created with the intention of uniting the two historic grapes of the area, Moscato di Noto and Nero d’Avola , which between Pachino and the country to the south of Noto have been known for centuries. Two vines that can provide strength to the territory under a single name, DOC Noto. Planeta has always wished for a DOC Noto and has always considered it fundamental to be able to communicate the importance of the territory of origin of their wine. Noto, that today can also boast the prestigious title of a UNESCO Heritage Site. Noto and Nero d’Avola, Noto and the baroque, and Noto and its Passito are a single entity. We are firmly convinced that the DOC Noto and Nero d’Avola will become similar to that of Montalcino and Sangiovese; a unique area, extraordinary and without equal.   • The Antikythera Mechanism, Rhodes, and Epeiros
    The Antikythera Mechanism, Rhodes, and Epeiros Paul Iversen Introduction I am particularly honored to be asked to contribute to this Festschrift in honor of James Evans. For the last nine years I have been engaged in studying the Games Dial and the calendar on the Metonic Spiral of the Antikythera Mechanism,1 and in that time I have come to admire James’s willingness to look at all sides of the evidence, and the way in which he conducts his research in an atmosphere of collaborative and curious inquiry combined with mutual respect. It has long been suggested that the Antikythera Mechanism may have been built on the is- land of Rhodes,2 one of the few locations attested in ancient literary sources associated with the production of such celestial devices. This paper will strengthen the thesis of a Rhodian origin for the Mechanism by demonstrating that the as-of-2008-undeciphered set of games in Year 4 on the Games Dial were the Halieia of Rhodes, a relatively minor set of games that were, appro- priately for the Mechanism, in honor of the sun-god, Helios (spelled Halios by the Doric Greeks). This paper will also summarize an argument that the calendar on the Metonic Spiral cannot be that of Syracuse, and that it is, contrary to the assertions of a prominent scholar in Epirote stud- ies, consistent with the Epirote calendar. This, coupled with the appearance of the extremely minor Naan games on the Games Dial, suggests that the Mechanism also had some connection with Epeiros.
