Vanuatu Fisheries Resource Profile VANUATU FISHERIES RESOURCE PROFILES Compiled by Moses John Amos Fisheries Department, Port Vila VANUATU Sponsored by The International Waters Programme of the Vanuatu node funded by GEF, Implemented by UNDP and executed by SPREP 1 Vanuatu Fisheries Resource Profile The PREFACE The International Waters Programme of the Vanuatu node funded by GEF implemented by UNDP and executed by SPREP was requested to provide funding assistance for the review and up date the “Republic of Vanuatu Fisheries Resource Profiles” prepared by Lui A. J Bell and Moses J. Amos in 1993. The purpose of the profiles were to: • provide information for the Government on the level of fresh water and marine resources available for appropriate development planning and instigating regulatory controls for resource conservation and management; • facilitate the dissemination of information and data that are required within government, local communities as well as regionally and internationally; and, • facilitate the provision of concise and timely information required by potential investors. The Terms of Reference for the review are as follows: • Undertake library research to collate and assess all existing documentation, data. Images, etc.., which provides information relating to the resource identity, and abundance, distribution, exploitation, marketing and current management measures in Vanuatu; • Based on the information examined and the Fisheries Resource Profile for Vanuatu prepared by FFA in 1991: i. provide and update list for fresh water and marine resources to include their identity, abundance and local distribution, ii. describe the utilization of the resources including the exploitation and marketing information of each resource, and; iii. describe current management (including proposed management plans) for each resource described. -

A Lexicographical Introduction and Inventory of Pendau * Fish Names Phil Quick SIL International [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper introduces the first inventory of fish names in Pendau (Tolitoli language group in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia). Among other purposes this paper provides a documentation of about 290 Pendau fish names (in an appended dictionary format), provides other Sulawesi specialists with comparative data, provides field linguists with an outline of some of the issues involved in descriptive documentation of flora and fauna, and provides new data for historical and comparative linguists. Topics covered in this paper are presented in such a way as to help researchers evaluate either the entire inventory of fish names or particular entries of interest. 1. INTRODUCTION This paper introduces the first inventory of fish names in Pendau (Tomini-Tolitoli language group in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia). The purpose of this portion of the paper is to focus on identifying fish names and the total number of fish names possible in a language, understanding the syntax used for binomial names, understanding some of the innovations and folk taxonomy employed, highlight those fish names that begin with one of the two formatives si and ’ali, as in sinobulung ‘various parrotfish species’ and ’alibambang ‘various butterflyfish species’, various bannerfish species, and various angelfish species’, and finally discuss the potential for discovering new species. The identification of fish names and other flora and fauna in a language is not a simple task. This paper also reviews the problems and challenges involved in providing a quality inventory that can be used by other researchers. -

Hebert Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding, Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada Abstract Background: Trade in ornamental fishes represents, by far, the largest route for the importation of exotic vertebrates. There is growing pressure to regulate this trade with the goal of ensuring that species are sustainably harvested and that their point of origin is accurately reported. One important element of such regulation involves easy access to specimen identifications, a task that is currently difficult for all but specialists because of the large number of species involved. The present study represents an important first step in making identifications more accessible by assembling a DNA barcode reference sequence library for nearly half of the ornamental fish species imported into North America. Methodology/Principal Findings: Analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene from 391 species from 8 coral reef locations revealed that 98% of these species exhibit distinct barcode clusters, allowing their unambiguous identification. Most species showed little intra-specific variation (adjusted mean = 0.21%), but nine species included two or three lineages showing much more divergence (2.19–6.52%) and likely represent overlooked species complexes. By contrast, three genera contained a species pair or triad that lacked barcode divergence, cases that may reflect hybridization, young taxa or taxonomic over-splitting. Conclusions/Significance: Although incomplete, this barcode library already provides a new species identification tool for the ornamental fish industry, opening a realm of applications linked to collection practices, regulatory control and conservation. -

Reef Fish Assessment in Fiji's “I Qoliqoli”

Under water census was conducted in 16 fishing grounds in different areas of the Fiji Group. Two fishing grounds from each area were surveyed. The abundance and biomass of finfishes in a fishing ground was estimated. The fishing grounds in outer islands have a higher biomass than the main islands (Viti Levu) of the Fiji Group. Abundance and biomass of finfishes among habitats within a fishing ground was also determined. Abundance was higher in the lagoon but somewhat similar in the reef area, reef slope, back reef and fore reef. However, fore reef had higher biomass. There was a slight variation in the size distribution among depths and habitats. Due to the lack of catch data for each fishing ground surveyed it was not possible to determine the status of exploitation of the stock. However, this study implies that highly commercial fishes are rare in areas with higher human population. If more information on catches will be gathered, the data sampled here will improve the data analysis and sampling scheme of the department as well as enhance the gathering of catch data/CPUE during the visual transect surveys in fishing communities. A total of 798 nominal species belonging to 423 valid species and 29 genera is included. Most of the species are grouped in five genera: Chromis (109 species), Pomacentrus (82), Chrysiptera (40), Stegastes (39), and Amphiprion (29), but 12 genera contain only one or two species. The following main taxonomic decisions are taken: Chrysiptera personata Fowler, 1946 is a new synonym of Chrysiptera rex (Snyder 1909); Dischistodus notophthalmus (Bleeker, 1853) is the valid Received: 23 November 2020 name for the species known as Dischistodus melanotus (Bleeker, 1858). All these senior synonyms are herein regarded as nomina oblita. Neopomacentrus flavicauda is proposed as nomen novum Neopomacentrus xanthurus Allen and Randall, 1980. Stegastes adustus (Troschel, 1865) is the valid name for the species known as Stegastes dorsopunicans (Poey, 1868) and Wangia Fowler, 1954 is an available name not invalidated by Wanga Chen 1943. -
