Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the emergence of Canadian popular music and the development of music genres that enjoyed the greatest popularity in Canada. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to an investigation of conditions connected to the relation of Canadian music and Canadian sense of identity and uniqueness. Further, an account of Canadian radio broadcasting and induction of regulating acts which influenced music production in Canada in the second half of the twentieth century are given. Moreover, the effectiveness and contributions of these regulating acts are summarized and evaluated. Last but not least, the main characteristics of the music style of a female singer songwriter Joni Mitchell are examined. -

A dynamic, unforgettable artist whose signature style has made him a legend among blues musicians. Terry Robb is one of the top acoustic blues guitarists of our time. His signature fingerpicking style has earned him international acclaim from worldwide audiences, music critics and his distinguished peers. Incorporating elements from the Mississippi Delta music tradition, ragtime, country, swing and free jazz, Robb has built a unique blues sound that has made him a legend in his prolific music career spanning more than four decades. The multitude of awards Terry Robb has received speak to his seminal talent as a blues guitarist. Robb has been inducted into both the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and the Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame. He single-handedly defined the Muddy Award for Best Acoustic Guitar, winning the honor 19 consecutive years from 1992 until 2011. Upon his retirement from the competition in 2011, the award was renamed the “Terry Robb Best Acoustic Guitar” Muddy Award to honor his landmark contributions to blues music. Robb was born in British Columbia, raised in the United States and currently resides in Portland, Oregon. He achieved greatness at an early age, performing with Ramblin’ Rex of Frank Zappa / Captain Beefheart fame, Canned Heat’s Henry Vestine, and steel string guitar icon John Fahey. At age twenty-four, Robb produced and played accompaniment on Fahey’s 1984 release “Let Go,” which received a four-star review by Rolling Stone and led to numerous subsequent collaborations for which Robb served as Fahey’s producer and session guitarist. As an acclaimed producer and session guitarist, Robb has contributed to many award-winning projects. -

WHAT IS DEEP LISTENING? What is Deep Listening? There’s more to listening than meets the ear. Pauline Oliveros describes Deep Listening as “listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what one is doing.” Basically Deep Listening, as developed by Oliveros, explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature – exclusive and inclusive -- of listening. The practice includes bodywork, sonic meditations, interactive performance, listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination and dreams, and listening to listening itself. It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness and other creative skills vital to personal and community growth. The Deep Listening: Art/Science conference provides artists, educators, and researchers an opportunity to creatively share ideas related to the practice, philosophy and science of Deep Listening. Developed by com- poser and educator Pauline Oliveros, Deep Listening is an embodied meditative practice of enhancing one’s attention to listening. Deep Listening began over 40 years ago with Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations and organi- cally evolved through performances, workshops and retreats.
