Performances take place at the Jane Mallett Theatre – St Lawrence Centre for the Arts, 27 Front St E, Toronto for $25. This season’s concert has a unique flavour. Besides popular composers like John Rutter, we are also presenting a larger roster of Renaissance style pieces that will evoke images of troubadours and an Arthurian holiday. A highlight of the concert includes an original arrangement of Canadian composer Jane Siberry’s masterpiece: Calling All Angels. This song has been recorded by the legendary k.d. lang. Singing Out’s accompanist Beth Hanson was overjoyed when Ms. Siberry personally gave her permission to arrange the song for the choir: “I expected to get a form letter reply, but instead Jane herself replied saying that I could arrange away, then send it to her if I was happy with the results. Trying to notate for the chorus the delicate melodic nuances she sings was a rewarding challenge.” Artistic Director Jody Malone is excited that “we have invited various instrumentalists to join us in this concert, to provide a variety of backdrops for our music. Be prepared to hear some familiar tunes as well as some lesser known works as we plan to delight you once again!” Tickets are $25 and are available online at www.singingout.com, or may be purchased at Out on the Street 551 Church Street, Toronto. A limited number of tickets may also be available at the door, one hour before each performance. Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the emergence of Canadian popular music and the development of music genres that enjoyed the greatest popularity in Canada. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to an investigation of conditions connected to the relation of Canadian music and Canadian sense of identity and uniqueness. Further, an account of Canadian radio broadcasting and induction of regulating acts which influenced music production in Canada in the second half of the twentieth century are given. Moreover, the effectiveness and contributions of these regulating acts are summarized and evaluated. Last but not least, the main characteristics of the music style of a female singer songwriter Joni Mitchell are examined.

    WHAT IS DEEP LISTENING? What is Deep Listening? There’s more to listening than meets the ear. Pauline Oliveros describes Deep Listening as “listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what one is doing.” Basically Deep Listening, as developed by Oliveros, explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature – exclusive and inclusive -- of listening. The practice includes bodywork, sonic meditations, interactive performance, listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination and dreams, and listening to listening itself.
