She was passionate about the chorus and, in spite of a ten-year struggle with cancer, gave generously of her time and talents. She was an independent, adventuresome woman who was energized by singing. In honor of Eileen’s passion that Aurora continue to flourish, we have established the Eileen Spencer Memorial Fund. It is supporting scholarships so that more women can sing together about peace and justice. In Aurora, the beauty and power of music to heal, to inspire, and to reflect a universal yearning for peace blend together in an atmosphere of inclusiveness and respect. Led by director Joan Szymko, Aurora Chorus consists of over 100 women from the Portland area. Through finely-crafted performances of music, Aurora has become a source of strength and inspiration for our community. Aurora presents two concerts each season and also appears at community events. Two full length CDs of the chorus’ music Full Circle and Solstice! are for sale in the lobby and through the chorus’ website, www.aurorachorus.org, where you can also read about future events and find out how to join the chorus. Electric cellist and vocalist Jami Sieber reaches inside the soul with compositions that are contemporary, timeless, lush, and powerfully evocative. Her music transforms from the deepest stillness to moving melodies and rhythms that light the soul on fire. Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the emergence of Canadian popular music and the development of music genres that enjoyed the greatest popularity in Canada. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to an investigation of conditions connected to the relation of Canadian music and Canadian sense of identity and uniqueness. Further, an account of Canadian radio broadcasting and induction of regulating acts which influenced music production in Canada in the second half of the twentieth century are given. Moreover, the effectiveness and contributions of these regulating acts are summarized and evaluated. Last but not least, the main characteristics of the music style of a female singer songwriter Joni Mitchell are examined.

  • Deep Listening, Touching Sound
WHAT IS DEEP LISTENING? What is Deep Listening? There’s more to listening than meets the ear. Pauline Oliveros describes Deep Listening as “listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what one is doing.” Basically Deep Listening, as developed by Oliveros, explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature – exclusive and inclusive -- of listening. The practice includes bodywork, sonic meditations, interactive performance, listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination and dreams, and listening to listening itself. It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness and other creative skills vital to personal and community growth. The Deep Listening: Art/Science conference provides artists, educators, and researchers an opportunity to creatively share ideas related to the practice, philosophy and science of Deep Listening. Developed by com- poser and educator Pauline Oliveros, Deep Listening is an embodied meditative practice of enhancing one’s attention to listening. Deep Listening began over 40 years ago with Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations and organi- cally evolved through performances, workshops and retreats. Deep Listening relates to a broad spectrum of other embodied practices across cultures and can be applied to a wide range of academic fields and disci- plines. This includes, but not limited to: • theories of cognitive

MEDIA CONTACT: Nicholas Dewkinandan, Marketing Director [email protected] 416-859-4248 Toronto’s LGBTQ Community Chorus FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PLEASE INCLUDE IN YOUR LISTINGS November 2013 Singing Out’s Annual Holiday Concert: Lighting up the Holidays with 100+ Voices TORONTO – Singing Out, Toronto’s 100+ member LGBTQ community choir, presents LIGHTS OF DECEMBER, A Holiday Concert, Saturday December 7, 2013 at 3:00pm & 7:30pm. Performances take place at the Jane Mallett Theatre – St Lawrence Centre for the Arts, 27 Front St E, Toronto for $25. This season’s concert has a unique flavour. Besides popular composers like John Rutter, we are also presenting a larger roster of Renaissance style pieces that will evoke images of troubadours and an Arthurian holiday. A highlight of the concert includes an original arrangement of Canadian composer Jane Siberry’s masterpiece: Calling All Angels. This song has been recorded by the legendary k.d. lang. Singing Out’s accompanist Beth Hanson was overjoyed when Ms. Siberry personally gave her permission to arrange the song for the choir: “I expected to get a form letter reply, but instead Jane herself replied saying that I could arrange away, then send it to her if I was happy with the results. Trying to notate for the chorus the delicate melodic nuances she sings was a rewarding challenge.” Artistic Director Jody Malone is excited that “we have invited various instrumentalists to join us in this concert, to provide a variety of backdrops for our music. Be prepared to hear some familiar tunes as well as some lesser known works as we plan to delight you once again!” Tickets are $25 and are available online at www.singingout.com, or may be purchased at Out on the Street 551 Church Street, Toronto.
