Keyser, Jr. 1993 (Painting by Rowan Hughes) Flamenco Philosophy IA My own view of Flamenco is that it is an artistic expression of an intense awareness of the existential human condition. It is an effort to come to terms with the concept that we are all "strangers and afraid, in a world we never made"; that there is probably no higher being, and that even if there is he/she (or it) is irrelevant to the human condition in the final analysis. The truth in Flamenco is that life must be lived and death must be faced on an individual basis; that it is the fundamental responsibility of each man and woman to come to terms with their own alienation with courage, dignity and humor, and to support others in their efforts. It is an excruciatingly honest art form. For flamencos it is this ever-present consciousness of death that gives life itself its meaning; not only as in the tragedy of a child's death from hunger in a far-off land or a senseless drive-by shooting in a big city, but even more fundamentally in death as a consequence of life itself, and the value that must be placed on life at each moment and on each human being at each point in their journey through it. And it is the intensity of this awareness that gave the Gypsy artists their power of expression. -

Ethnographies of contemporary migrations emphasize the palpable presence of national borders and social boundaries in the everyday life of immigrants. Ethnomusicological literature on migrant and border musics has focused primarily on the role of music in evoking a sense of home and expressing group identity and solidarity in the face of assimilation. In jazz scholarship, the articulation and crossing of genre boundaries has been tied to jazz as a symbol of national cultural identity, both in the U.S and in jazz scenes around the world. While these works cover important aspects of the relationship between nationalism, immigration and music, the role of jazz in facilitating the crossing of national borders and blurring social boundaries between immigrant and native-born musicians in the U.S. has received relatively little attention to date. -

THE UNKNOWN EROS by Coventry Patmore. PREFACE TO THIRD EDITION. To this edition of "The Unknown Eros" are added all the other poems I have written, in what I venture--because it has no other name--to call "catalectic verse." Nearly all English metres owe their existence as metres to "catalexis," or pause, for the time of one or more feet, and, as a rule, the position and amount of catalexis are fixed. But the verse in which this volume is written is catalectic par excellence, employing the pause (as it does the rhyme) with freedom only limited by the exigencies of poetic passion. From the time of Drummond of Hawthornden to our own, some of the noblest flights of English poetry have been taken on the wings of this verse; but with ordinary readers it has been more or less discredited by the far greater number of abortive efforts, on the part sometimes of considerable poets, to adapt it to purposes with which it has no expressional correspondence; or to vary it by rhythmical movements which are destructive of its character. Some persons, unlearned in the subject of metre, have objected to this kind of verse that it is "lawless." But it has its laws as truly as any other. In its highest order, the lyric or "ode," it is a tetrameter, the line having the time of eight iambics. When it descends to narrative, or the expression of a less-exalted strain of thought, it becomes a trimeter, having the time of six iambics, or even a dimeter, with the time of four; and it is allowable to vary the tetrameter "ode" by the occasional introduction of passages in either or both of these inferior measures, but not, I think, by the use of any other. -

[...] A Christian band , on the other hand is just a band that has more than one Christian in it.' – John Jeremiah Sullivan (2012: 17-18) Although The Bloomsbury Handbook of Religion and Popular Music (Stewart and Abraham 2017) contains chapters such as Michael J. Gilmour's 'The Bible and Popular Music' (67-76) and Ibrahim Abraham and Francis Stewarts' 'Punk and Hardcore' (241- 250), there remains little informed academic consideration of the Christian music genre, especially punk and post-punk. John J. Thompson's Raised by Wolves (2000) and Mark Joseph's The Rock & Roll Rebellion (1999) offer insider histories, whilst Andrew Beaujon's Body Piercing Saved My Life (2006) is an hilarious, sceptical exploration of 'the phenomenon of Christian rock', focussed mostly on the early 2000s. Gilmour 's Call Me the Seeker: Listening to Religion in Popular Music (2005) is interested more in religious sources and themes; the nearest it gets to post-punk is Anna Kessler's consideration of Nick Cave (79-94) and J.R.C. Cousland's discussion of 'God, the Bad, and the Ugly' in the work of Nick Cave and Polly Harvey (129-157). Better, is Jay R Howard & John M. Streck's Apostle of Rock (1999), which takes a more sociological approach to what it calls 'The Splintered World of Contemporary Christian Music' and considers the tensions between ideas of ministry, entertainment, art and business for Christian musicians.
