Get to Know Your Neighborhood Turtles! We All Love Turtles
Originally published in the October and November 2017 Woodlake Life on the Lake Newsletter Get to know your neighborhood turtles! We all love turtles. Some of us have pet turtles and some of us are big fans of Ninja turtles. But we can do a little bit more to secure the future of these fascinating creatures. This article introduces the turtles in Woodlake and what can we do to protect them. I was driving on the Woodlake Village Parkway with my daughter, when we spotted a box turtle crossing the road. We changed the lane to avoid hitting the turtle, and turned around hoping to help the turtle cross the road. After 10 seconds, we were so sad to find the crushed turtle on the middle of the road. That was a very upsetting moment for both me and my four year old. May be the driver of the big truck did not see it…or may be the driver was too distracted to avoid it. Vehicle collisions are one of the major causes of turtle mortality. But if we were willing to stop or change the lane, we could have saved many of those turtles! Turtles are fascinating creatures for many reasons! Some ancient civilizations considered turtles as sacred animals and they believed that our world is supported by a giant “cosmic turtle”. Turtles are one of the oldest vertebrate groups on the planet earth, roaming around for about 220 million years, since before the time of dinosaurs. At the same time, turtles have a really long lifespan and scientists believe that many of them can easily surpass 100 years. -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT - Amphibians and reptiles are the most neglected and least studied wildlife groups in Pakistan. The present study was conducted in the selected areas of districts Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Chakwal, North Punjab, Pakistan, to obtain data on herpetofaunal species richness and abundance from February, 2010 to January, 2011 using area-constrained searches. A total of 35 species of amphibians and reptiles (29 genera, 16 families, four orders) were recorded from the study area. Of the recorded species, 30 were reptiles (25 genera, 13 families, three orders) and five were amphibians (four genera, three families and a single order). A total of 388 individuals belonging to 11 recognizable taxonomic units (RTUs) with a population density of 0.22 individuals/ ha. and 4.10 encounters were recorded. Of the recorded RTUs, two (lacertids and skinks) were rated as uncommon, seven (hard-shell turtles, soft-shell turtles, agamids, gekkonids, medium and large-sized lizards, non-venomous snakes and venomous snakes) as frequent and two (toads and frogs) as common. Districts Rawalpindi/ Islamabad had higher species richness while District Chakwal had relatively higher species diversity and evenness. Threatened species of the area included the Narrow-headed Soft-shell Turtle (Chitra indica), Indian Soft-shell Turtle (Nilssonia gangetica), Peacock Soft-shell Turtle (Aspideretes hurum), and Brown River Turtle (Pangshura smithii). -

Introduced Amphibians and Reptiles in the Cuban Archipelago

Through an extensive review of information on Cuban herpetofauna, including protected area management plans, we present the first comprehensive inventory of introduced amphibians and reptiles in the Cuban archipelago. We classify species as Invasive, Established Non-invasive, Not Established, and Transported. We document the arrival of 26 species, five amphibians and 21 reptiles, in more than 35 different introduction events. Of the 26 species, we identify 11 species (42.3%), one amphibian and 10 reptiles, as established, with nine of them being invasive: Lithobates catesbeianus, Caiman crocodilus, Hemidactylus mabouia, H. angulatus, H. frenatus, Gonatodes albogularis, Sphaerodactylus argus, Gymnophthalmus underwoodi, and Indotyphlops braminus. We present the introduced range of each of the 26 species in the Cuban archipelago as well as the other Caribbean islands and document historical records, the population sources, dispersal pathways, introduction events, current status of distribution, and impacts. -

Salamander Species Listed as Injurious Wildlife Under 50 CFR 16.14 Due to Risk of Salamander Chytrid Fungus Effective January 28, 2016 Effective January 28, 2016, both importation into the United States and interstate transportation between States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or any territory or possession of the United States of any live or dead specimen, including parts, of these 20 genera of salamanders are prohibited, except by permit for zoological, educational, medical, or scientific purposes (in accordance with permit conditions) or by Federal agencies without a permit solely for their own use. This action is necessary to protect the interests of wildlife and wildlife resources from the introduction, establishment, and spread of the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans into ecosystems of the United States. The listing includes all species in these 20 genera: Chioglossa, Cynops, Euproctus, Hydromantes, Hynobius, Ichthyosaura, Lissotriton, Neurergus, Notophthalmus, Onychodactylus, Paramesotriton, Plethodon, Pleurodeles, Salamandra, Salamandrella, Salamandrina, Siren, Taricha, Triturus, and Tylototriton The species are: (1) Chioglossa lusitanica (golden striped salamander). (2) Cynops chenggongensis (Chenggong fire-bellied newt). (3) Cynops cyanurus (blue-tailed fire-bellied newt). (4) Cynops ensicauda (sword-tailed newt).
