Thank you. 1 Abstract The Oaxaca Valley during Monte Albán V provides an ideal context to explore the relationship between group identity and material culture in archaeology, a relationship that is often left largely unquestioned despite being poorly understood. Since the first excavations in the Valley of Oaxaca in the early 20th century, the region has been a source of archaeological interest, intrigue, and mystery. The decline of the city of Monte Albán as the sole political and cultural capital of the region marks the beginning of the period that the early explorers called “Monte Albán V” (MA V), which they interpreted as the result of a Mixtec invasion of an ethnically Zapotec state. This hypothesis has since been rejected by most scholars, but the dichotomy of Zapotec and Mixtec peoples as clearly delineated ethnic groups—as well as a belief in a sharp cultural and political discontinuity in the transition into MA V—has permeated much of our archaeological understanding of group identity in prehispanic Oaxaca. By compiling information from previous archaeological reports, I have analyzed variation in human burials dated to MA V at various sites across the region to better understand what identities were considered important in funerary practice. In particular, this study takes into account burial position, associated ceramic artifacts, and sex distribution. By applying recent anthropological theories of identity as social action, this study challenges many of the assumptions about identity in Postclassic Oaxaca that have been taken for granted by past research. Distinct ethnic traditions that could be attributed to Zapotec or Mixtec groups were not visible in the funerary treatment of individuals. Instead, the manipulation of genealogy and claims to specific ancestors appears more fundamental to group identity in much of MA V Oaxaca. 2 Table of Contents ACKNOWLEDGMENTS     Aztec Culture Education Committee Ideas Report Draft August 2018 ORIGINAL CHARGE/FRAMEWORK A committee of cross campus partners including faculty, staff and students was formed at the end of the 2016- 2017 academic year to work on and develop a comprehensive Aztec culture educational plan. As a result of the committee meetings, a number of proposed initiatives were identified. The charge of the group and the basis of the conversations have revolved around fulfilling prior commitments made by the campus, as an example: Associated Students Referendum Spring 2008, passed Implementation of an Aztec Culture Project. The Project will include three elements intended to promote historically accurate portrayals of the Aztec Culture: new botanical gardens around the campus that include indigenous plantings from areas where the Aztecs thrived, a glass-mosaic mural that depicts historically accurate images portraying the origins of the Aztec Culture, and educational programs about the Aztec Culture that would be offered to all new SDSU students As the committee incorporated the recognition of the University’s relationship to local Indian groups as well as other indigenous groups from Mexico that comprise the larger University community. To begin prioritizing ideas and potential campus efforts, the following framework has been created from the current committee’s discussions, to categorize the overarching topical areas and objectives identified to date: San Diego State University will enrich the environment and deepen campus learning, both inside and outside the classroom, by enhancing Aztec Culture Education knowledge and understanding by strategically: • Expanding opportunities for scholarship regarding Aztec Culture, as well as local indigenous and Native American groups, through innovative courses, experiences, and engagement.

The most notable are 13 ceramic vessels and objects from the Xoo complex (a.d. 500–800) excavated by José García Payón in Calixtlahuaca (near the city of Toluca), and three Zapotec-style tombs excavated in Los Teteles (near the city of Puebla). We also mention Zapotec remains excavated near Tula, Hidalgo, and tombs in other parts of central Mexico. Terraciano, Chair My project traces the evolution of the Zapotec cultural practice of guelaguetza, an indigenous sharing system of collaboration and exchange in Mexico, from pre-Columbian and colonial times to the present. Ironically, the term "guelaguetza" was appropriated by the Mexican government in the twentieth century to promote an annual dance festival in the city of Oaxaca that has little to do with the actual meaning of the indigenous tradition. My analysis of Zapotec-language alphabetic sources from the Central Valley of Oaxaca, written from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, reveals that Zapotecs actively participated in the sharing system during this long period of transformation. My project demonstrates that the Zapotec sharing economy functioned to build and reinforce social networks among households in Zapotec communities.

Masson* Resumen La variación en las manifestaciones del sobrenatural Cocijo revela múltiples dis- fraces de esta entidad, incluyendo una deidad formal, la encarnación del rayo y el compañero espiritual de individuos poderosos. El contexto de las imágenes de Cocijo en los sitios precolombinos del valle de Oaxaca es principalmente funerario, lo cual sugiere que los rituales que tenían que ver con esta entidad estaban vinculados con la conmemoración de los ancestros como medio importante de reconocer el poder basa- do en el linaje entre los líderes de la sociedad zapoteca. Aquí se argumenta que las escenas de estas efigies reflejan rituales congelados en una acción que refleja la comuni- cación con los ancestros y la transformación de humanos en Cocijos o viceversa. Husted EGADE Business School, Tecnologico de Monterrey, Monterrey 64849, Mexico; [email protected] Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the unsustainable relations between business, society, and the natural environment in Mexico and around the world. Given these unsustainable relations, this essay asks the question: How can Mexican and multinational corporations enable human flourishing both at work and in the communities where they operate? It answers the question by examining how the Indigenous concept of Buen Vivir (living well) can serve as a basis for reimagining corporate social responsibility (CSR). Methodologically, it draws on ancient and contemporary Nahua poets as sources of ancestral Indigenous knowledge. Using these poets, the paper first establishes the applicability of Buen Vivir for Mexico. Relevant concepts include the quality of life, the relationship of humans to nature, the goal of economic growth, and the value of Indigenous knowledge. Using Buen Vivir as a framework for rethinking CSR, the paper integrates business within nature and dialogues with ancestral knowledge. It also focuses on localism and particularism, on quality in addition to quantity, on alternatives to economic growth, and on community. It ends by examining the implications of Buen Vivir for CSR theory and practice by incorporating Indigenous practices of communal work and conceptualizing the firm as a member of the community.
