E-mails: [email protected], [email protected] Introduction The latest list of Lithuanian Diptera included 3311 species (Pakalniškis et al., 2006) and later publications during the past nine years added about 220 more, mainly from the following families: Nematocera: Limoniidae and Tipulidae (Podėnas, 2008), Trichoceridae (Petrašiūnas & Visarčuk, 2007; Petrašiūnas, 2008), Chironomidae (Móra & Kovács, 2009), Bolitophilidae, Keroplatidae, Mycetophilidae and Sciaridae (Kurina et al., 2011); Brachycera: Asilidae (Lutovinovas, 2012a), Syrphidae (Lutovinovas, 2007; 2012b; Lutovinovas & Kinduris, 2013), Pallopteridae (Lutovinovas, 2013), Ulidiidae (Lutovinovas & Petrašiūnas, 2013), Tephritidae (Lutovinovas, 2014), Fanniidae and Muscidae (Lutovinovas, 2007; Lutovinovas & Rozkošný, 2009), Tachinidae (Lutovinovas, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012c). Fauna of only the few Diptera families in Lithuania (out of 90 families recorded) is studied comparatively better (e.g. Agromyzidae, Limoniidae, Simuliidae, Syrphidae, Tipulidae, Tachinidae), with majority of the families getting weaker or only sporadic attention, if at all. New species are being recorded every time and more effort is devoted, proving that there is still much to do in Diptera research in Lithuania. The following publication provides new data on fifteen Diptera families in Lithuania with most attention paid to several anthophilous families (e.g. Bombyliidae, Conopidae and Stratiomyidae). Material and Methods Most specimens were caught by sweeping the vegetation and the few others were identified from photographs. -

THE ESSEX FIELD CLUB HEADQUARTERS: THE PASSMORE EDWARDS MUSEUM, ROMFORD ROAD, STRATFORD, LONDON, E15 4LZ NEWSLETTER NO. 12 December 1994 ESSEX FIELD CLUB EPPING FOREST MUSEUM AND TAXONOMIC WORKSHOP At its meeting on the 14th November the City of London Epping Forest & Open Spaces Committee expressed a very strong interest in becoming involved in the most effective way in safeguarding the Field Club's former collections. How best to be involved has still to be decided, and no specific decision has yet been made. The committee has however asked to be provided with costs of various opions and will meet to consider the matter further on January 6th. If by one means or another a new museum comes about, it would become the Club's new headquarters and we hope it would provide a wide range of facilities for its members, including a meeting room/taxonomic workshop. To equip this workshop the club is planning to apply for a separate grant, and we need the advice of members, and especially our recorders, to compile the shopping list. It is our intention that the workshop facilities will also be available to associated learned natural history societies, and again we would like to hear from any societies in the London/Essex area who would be interested in participating. The proposed workshop facilities fall into three categories. We would like to acquire as complete a set as we can of the latest identification guides to relevant groups of organisms in the county. To do this effectively would mean for example buying well over £3000 worth of modern mycological monographs and regional European fungus floras. -

Resumen El orden Diptera constituye el grupo dominante de la comunidad sarcosaprófaga en número, diversidad y en términos de materia orgánica consumida en cadáveres animales, contribuyendo a obtener conclusiones en la práctica forense. De entre ellos, ciertos grupos suelen ser ignorados al estudiar las comunidades sarcosaprófagas o son citados sólo al nivel de familia, a pesar de que algunos pueden estar bien representados en la comunidad. En este trabajo, se presentan los resultados faunísticos del estudio de 8.247 ejemplares pertenecientes a 64 especies de 11 familias del suborden Brachycera (Diptera), recogidos durante la realización de un estudio sobre la fauna entomosarcosaprófaga asociada a cadáveres animales en El Morrón de Espuña, a 1.500 m de altitud, en el Parque Natural de Sierra Espuña (Murcia), en el que se utilizó, como dispositivo de muestreo, una trampa tipo Schoenly modificada cebada con cadáveres de lechón (Sus scrofa L.) de unos 5 Kg de peso. -

the snail-killing fly SALTICELLA FASCIATA new for the netherlands, with an update of belgian records (diptera: sciomyzidae) Jonas Mortelmans The snail-killing flySalticella fasciata was discovered in Belgium in 2010. Since then, several new localities on the Belgian coast were discovered and in 2014, the first record for the Netherlands was found. This is the first representative of the genus and also of the subfamily Salticellinae in the Netherlands. In this paper, records from Belgium and the Netherlands are reviewed and information on biology and habitats is summarised. The family Sciomyzidae includes four subfamilies: introduction Huttonininae, Phaeomyiinae, Salticellinae and Flies of the family Sciomyzidae, commonly Sciomyzinae. The subfamily Salticellinae contains known as snail-killing or marsh flies, are found only two species: Salticella fasciata Meigen, 1830 worldwide, with 543 described species in in the Palaearctic region and S. stuckenbergi 63 genera (Knutson & Vala 2011). Larvae of most Verbeke, 1962 in southern Africa. Salticella species attack aquatic, shoreline, or terrestrial fasciata adults are large (generally 9-12 mm) and species of snails and slugs, whereas larvae of conspicuous flies, easily recognized (fig. 1, 2). Five visits were made in favourable conditions in May, June, July, August and September to record the insects of a number of terrestrial groups. The groups surveyed are highlighted in Section 1.3. Survey involved direct searching and sweep-netting the vegetation in each survey area. Tables showing the species recorded in each compartment are presented in Section 1.4. Six Red Data Book, twenty Nationally Scarce and two BAP Priority species were recorded. Details of these and other noteworthy species are presented in Section 1.5. -
