Part 1 - Acalyptratae. – Acta Mus. Siles. Sci. Natur. 69: 1-19, 2020. Abstract: Records of 18 species of the families Micropezidae (1 species), Lonchaeidae (1 species), Lauxaniidae (1 species), Chamaemyiidae (6 species), Agromyzidae (6 species) and Chloropidae (3 species) from glacial sand deposits in the Czech Silesia (NE Czech Republic) are presented and their association with sandy habitats is discussed. All of them are recorded from the Czech Silesia for the first time, 4 are new additions to the fauna of Moravia and 9 for the whole Czech Republic. None of the recorded species is psammobiont but five of them are classified as psammophilous, viz. Micro- peza lateralis Meigen, 1826 (Micropezidae), Calliopum geniculatum (Fabricius, 1805) (Lauxaniidae), Cerodontha (Xenophytomyza) leptophallus L. Papp, 2016, Ophiomyia disordens Pakalniškis, 1998 (both Agromyzidae), Aphanotrigonum parahastatum Dely-Draskovits, 1981 (Chloropidae), and Leucopis celsa Tanasijtshuk, 1979 as probably psammophilous. A new easternmost record of M. late- ralis (from S. Poland: Godów) is presented and the association of this species and C. geniculatum with growths of Cytisus scoparius is confirmed. Leucopis monticola Tanasijtshuk, 1961, L. celsa and A. parahastatum are recorded from northernmost known localities. These species, and also C.

  • Ephydra Hians) Say at Mono Lake, California (USA) in Relation to Physical Habitat
Hydrobiologia 197: 193-205, 1990. F. A. Comln and T. G. Northcote (eds), Saline Lakes. 193 © 1990 Kluwer Academic Publishers. Printed in Belgium. Distribution and abundance of the alkali fly (Ephydra hians) Say at Mono Lake, California (USA) in relation to physical habitat David B. Herbst Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, University of California, Star Route 1, Box 198, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA Key words: Ephydra, life cycle, development, distribution, Mono Lake, substrate Abstract The distribution and abundance of larval, pupal, and adult stages of the alkali fly Ephydra hians Say were examined in relation to location, benthic substrate type, and shoreline features at Mono Lake. Generation time was calculated as a degree-day model for development time at different temperatures, and compared to the thermal environment of the lake at different depths. Larvae and pupae have a contagious distribution and occur in greatest abundance in benthic habitats containing tufa (a porous limestone deposit), and in least abundance on sand or sand/mud substrates. Numbers increase with increasing area of tufa present in a sample, but not on other rocky substrates (alluvial gravel/cobble or cemented sand). Standing stock densities are greatest at locations around the lake containing a mixture of tufa deposits, detrital mud sediments, and submerged vegetation. Shoreline adult abundance is also greatest in areas adjacent to tufa. The shore fly (ephydrid) community varies in composition among different shoreline habitats and shows a zonation with distance from shore. The duration of pupation (from pupa formation to adult eclosion) becomes shorter as temperature increases. The temperature dependence of pupa development time is not linear and results in prolonged time requirements to complete development at temperatures below 20 ° C.

Email: [email protected] (Received 3 December 2019; accepted 9 March 2020; first published online 27 April 2020) Abstract The identity, richness, and abundance of true flies (Diptera) from the nests of three cavity-nesting raptors (Aves) were investigated in northern Nova Scotia, Canada. After fledging, flies were extracted from the nest mate- rial using Berlese funnels within an emergence chamber. Thirty-one species/morphospecies from 14 families were collected, including eight new records for Nova Scotia and two new records for eastern North America. Introduction Bird nests are micro-ecosystems with diverse communities of invertebrates, from ectoparasites to commensal species. Most studies of the arthropods in bird nests have focussed on the presence and impact of ectoparasites (Møller et al. 1990; Loye and Zuk 1991; Krištofík et al. 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007; Fairn et al. 2014), including fleas (Siphonaptera) (Phipps and Bennett 1974); mites (Acari) (Wasylik 1971); and nest-associated Diptera in the families Muscidae (Lowenberg-Neto 2008), Calliphoridae (Bennett and Whitworth 1991; Whitworth and Bennett 1992), and Carnidae (Cannings 1986a, 1986b; Dawson and Bortolotti 1997).

The following ten species have been erroneously reported from Finland and are here deleted from the Finnish checklist: Chaetolonchaea das- yops (Meigen, 1826), Earomyia crystallophila (Becker, 1895), Lonchaea hirti- ceps Zetterstedt, 1837, Lonchaea laticornis Meigen, 1826, Prochyliza lundbecki (Duda, 1924), Campiglossa achyrophori (Loew, 1869), Campiglossa irrorata (Fallén, 1814), Campiglossa tessellata (Loew, 1844), Dioxyna sororcula (Wie- demann, 1830) and Tephritis nigricauda (Loew, 1856). The Finnish records of Lonchaeidae: Lonchaea bruggeri Morge, Lonchaea contigua Collin, Lonchaea difficilis Hackman and Piophilidae: Allopiophila dudai (Frey) are considered dubious. The total number of species of Tephritoidea and Sciomyzoidea found from Finland is now 262. Kaj Winqvist, Zoological Museum, University of Turku, FI-20014 Turku, Finland. Ten new species are described from Israel: Meoneura bilboi n. sp., M. brakeae n. sp., M. davidi n. sp., M. goldemari n. sp., M. grimmorum n. sp., M. lilliputensis n. sp., M. meszarosi n. sp., M. nilsholgerssoni n. sp. (also from Egypt), M. oskari n. sp., and M. wichtelorum n. sp. Ten species—M. acuticerca, M. furcata, M. glaberrima, M. hungarica, M. lacteipennis, M. maritima, M. moravica, M. neottiophila, M. prima, and M. triangularis—are recorded in the country for the first time. Three new synonyms are introduced: Meoneura palaestinensis Hennig, 1937 = Meoneura nitidiuscula Collin, 1949 (n. syn.), Meoneura moravica Gregor & Papp, 1981 = Meoneura pamphylica Ozerov, 2008 (n. syn.) and Meoneura prima (Becker, 1903) = Meo- neura baluchistani Duda, 1936 (n. syn.). A total of 22 species of Meoneura and one species of Carnus are now known from Israel. Four identification keys are presented for species of Meoneura species groups. KEYWORDS: Diptera, Carnidae, Meoneura, Carnus, Filth flies, Israel, Egypt, new species, new synonymy, identification keys.
