Mannheim: MZES, University of Mannheim. 3 Acknowledgements The EES 2019 Voter Study was organized and designed by the EES 2019 Task force: Wouter van der Brug (co-chair) Sara B. Hobolt (co-chair) Sebastian Adrian Popa (treasurer) Hermann Schmitt Eftichia Teperoglou Ilke Toygur Claes de Vreese Catherine de Vries The data collection of the 2019 EES Voter Study was generously funded by Volkswagen Foundation. Additional grants from the MZES at the University of Mannheim and the Amsterdam Center for European Studies at the University of Amsterdam supported planning and realization of the study. The study also benefitted from the excellent work of Gallup International, and Pascal Chelala in particular. Gallup International carried out the fieldwork in all the 28 member countries. Last but not least, the study would not have been possible without the help of many colleagues, and country experts form the wider academic community, who spent valuable time on the questionnaire and study preparation, often at very short notice. We are grateful for their help making this Voter Study possible. Variable names The data file consists of sets of variables distinguished by the characters Q, QG, D and W The variable order and –numbering reflect that of the EES2019 Voter Study, Master questionnaire. Q and QG variables comprise the interview questions, with the important distinction that Q questions were commissioned by the EES team and QG question were added by Gallup International. The EES team does not take any responsibility over the wording and translation of QG questions. Both variable order and –numbering reflect that of the 2019 Master Questionnaire. D variables represent the socio-demographic variable. The variable order and-2019 master questionnaire. W variables are additional variables, based either on additional information from the fieldwork agency, or derived on the basis of questionnaire variables. The weighting variables with a name ending in “pol” are based on both standard and political weighting factors: gender x age, education, urbanization, region (Nuts), turnout European Elections and results European Elections by party. See more information about the weighting variables in Appendix 3. Missing Values All Q, QG, and D variables follow an identical missing values labeling scheme. 97: Refused [REF] 98: Don't Know [DK] 99: No answer [NA] For the q10, q13 and qp24 batteries, the we added: 98: Do not know the party/ Do not know how to place the party Please note that no missing values have been defined in the data file, so it is up to the researcher to decide how to deal with various causes of missing data. Where possible, the original question codes have been maintained as subfixes. Missing values are not country specific. The original vote choice question are: Q2 (Party that would best handle MIP), Q7 (Vote choice in the 2019 EP elections) Q9 (vote choice in previous national elections) and while the original party ID question is Q25. Based on these variables we computed a new set of variables (Q2_ees, Q7_ees, Q9_ees and Q25_ees) assigning unique values that correspond to EES 2009 Voter Study and EES 2014 Voter Study. In case the parties were not included in the previous studies we assigned a new code. These codes can also be used to link the EES data with 6 other existing datasets (e.g. Euromanifesto Project, CHES, ParlGov). The questions regarding the original placement of parties along the left-right continuum (Q13_), EU integration (Q24_) and the probability to vote questions (Q10_) represent a special case. For these variables, not the answer options, but the actual questions vary by country. For these three sets of questions, the specific party probed is described in these release notes (see below). The order of these party-questions is identical for all three questions (i.e., Q10_, Q13_ and Q24_) and (with the exception of Cyprus) is identical to the order used in the original country questionnaires. Furthermore, for the party choice variables we create a new set of variables ending in the letter n (i.e. Q2n, Q7n, Q9n, Q25n) which represents a unique party coted that matches the party order for Q10_, Q13_ and Q24_. Practically the order of parties is the same across Q2n, Q7n, Q9n, Q25n, Q10_, Q13_ and Q24_. A list containing the national party names (per variable), as well as the corresponding party codes (used in the vote choice and party ID questions), is provided below (Appendix 1: EES 2019 party codes and variables). 7 Variable Specific notes The following is a description of those variables where additional information may be required. Embargoed items The following items present in the Master Questionnaire are not present in the EES2019 Voter Study Pre-release Q15, Q17, Q28, Q29, Q30 and Q31. This items are under embargo and will be made available at a later date. Qp2, Q7, Q9 and Q25-– Party Choice Questions Q2, Q7, Q9 and qpp24-– ask for EU and national party choice – the answer options (parties) vary per country. Country specific codes have been recoded and now start with a country prefix (1+ISO) followed by a specific code per party (last three digits indicate the party family), see variables Q2_ees, Q7_ees, Q9_ees and Q25_ees. Labels for Q2_ees, Q7_ees, Q9_ees and Q25_ees are included in the integrated data file. See the below spreadsheet (i.e Appendix 1: EES 2019 party codes and variables) for the for the party names and codes used in these questions, as well as questions q Q10_, Q13_ and Q24_. Please note that in Luxembourg the 2019 EP elections we concurrent with national parliament elections. Q7 therefore asks what R voted in the concurrent national election. Q10_xx, Q13_xx and Q24_xx. Q10_xx (probability to vote), Q13_xx (left-right placement), Q24_xx : each questions probes one specific party. The party probed is documented below. The suffixes (_xx) are consistent for the three blocs of questions and with the party order in variables Q2n, Q7n, Q9n and Q25n. With a few exceptions in the case of Cyprus, they are identical to those used in the original language questionnaires Note that order of the parties is fixed, and identical to that used in the original language questionnaire. The starting point of the rotation (first question asked) varies per respondent and question bloc. Q27 Candidate recognition battery. To ease analysis (and avoid possible embarrassment), the correct answers are: Q27_1: European People's Party\ (NATIONAL PARTY) (2) Q27_2: Socialists & Democrats\ (NATIONAL PARTY) (1) Q27_3: The European Conservative and Reformists\ (NATIONAL PARTY) (3) See Appendix 2 for the complete list of national parties used in Q27. 8 Appendix
