OUR LADY OF THE LAKE 1400 MAIN STREET, LEOMINSTER, MA 01453 978-342-2978 Dear Friends, As you may be aware, Pope Francis declared five new saints at a canonization ceremony at the Vatican two weeks ago. England’s Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890) and four women from the far corners of the world. The women are: Italy’s Giuseppina Vannini (1859-1911), founder of the Daughters of Saint Camillus; India’s Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan SAT., OCT. 26th (1876-1926), founder of the Congregation of 5:00PM John Naylor, Month’s Mind the Sisters of the Holy Family; Brazil’s Sister Tommy Collet Dulce Lopes Pontes (1914-1992); and Switzerland’s Margherita Bays (1815-1879), a SUN., OCT. 27th Thirtieth Sunday laywoman. The fourth woman, Saint in Ordinary Time Marguerite Bays, Pope Francis said, “was a 8:00AM Jim Cameron seamstress” and “she speaks to us of the Carol Shimmin power of simple prayer, enduring patience and silent self-giving. That is how the Lord Baptism: Madison Patricia Krivi made the splendor of Easter radiate in her 9:45AM Richard Harrigan life.” Thousands of people gather for these Joseph Beard ceremonies which are carried out with great 11:45AM David Paul Neely, 5th Anniversary ceremony and great joy. I had the honor of 6:00PM Velma Larose, Bday Remembrance attending the canonization of St. Rosa Venerini while on sabbatical a number of MON., OCT. 28th Saints Simon and Jude years ago. 8:00AM Marilyn Fava, Month’s Mind Quite often, people have the tendency to Erna Mascitti think the saints were better people than the rest of us or that we might not be worthy to TUES., OCT. 29th become a saint. How do we think these saints 8:00AM Carlos Menendez-Aponte, started out? Let’s remember that every saint Bday Remembrance has a sinners past. It doesn’t mean that all of them led scandalous lives before turning WED., OCT. 30th themselves in the direction of Christ. It does 8:00AM Fernand Frechette, Month’s Mind mean, however, we cannot take away their Donna Decato, Month’s Mind humanity in our devotion to them. I like to use the definition of a saint that Lutheran THURS., OCT. 31st pastor and theologian, Paul Tillich FRIDAY, NOV. 1st Solemnity of All Saints created. He was no saint himself, but God 8:00AM The Deceased Members of our Parish uses sinners for good as well as the more “holy” among us. Tillich writes, “A saint is a 7:00PM The Deceased Members of our Parish saint not because they are better than you or SAT., NOV. 2nd All Souls’ Day I. A saint is a saint because they act like a window through which we see something 5:00PM Mass of Remembrance greater than ourselves.” Each of us, then, SUN., NOV. 3rd Thirty-First Sunday according this definition can act like that in Ordinary Time “window” for others so as to see the face of Christ in the world. Amazing! 8:00AM Lucille Reilly, 1st Anniversary This is why the Church celebrates each Virginia Marhefka, Bday Remembrance year with the Feast of All Saints on 9:45AM November 1st as a Holy Day of 11:45AM Marguerite Machia Obligation. Perhaps we would do better to 6:00PM call it more of a responsibility than obligation. Either way, it is a great opportunity to come and pray for or to those Please remember in your prayers folks we know who have gone before us but also showed us the face of Christ at one point Carolyn Bryant or another in their lives.
