Burnette ABSTRACT Middle Canyon, in the Whetstone Mountains southwest of Benson, Arizona, contains Paleozoic sedimentary rocks lying un- conformably on the Precambrian Pinal schist. The sedimentary rocks dip to the southwest and are cut by two sets of high-angle faults, a major set with northeast trend and a minor set with north­ west trend. The Pinal schist is intruded by Precambrian Whetstone granite and related pegmatite dikes. The Paleozoic rocks mapped range in age from Cambrian to Pennsylvanian. Quartzites, conglomerates, and shales predominate in the lower part of the section. The upper Cambrian and younger rocks are chiefly limestones. A trilobite from the Abrigo limestone is identified by Stoyanow as a new species. ii The Lonestar fluorite mine and one tungsten prospect contain the only known minerals of economic value. Mapping of the Lonestar mine shows localization of the fluorite vein along a shear zone in the Pinal schist. The geology was plotted on a map of scale 1:31,680 modi­ fied from a U. 8. Forest Service map of the Whetstone Mountains. Minor changes were made in the field to conform with drainage and topography. Aerial photographs loaned by the Soil Conservation Service aided in the study. Underground mine maps of the Lonestar mine were made with the assistance of Gene Thompson of the University of Arizona. The field work was started in the summer of 1952 and was carried on through the school year of 1952-53. The laboratory work necessary for this thesis was completed before the author left the University of Arizona for the U. S. Air Force. „ Most of the manuscript was written while the author was on active duty with the Air Force. 2 Location of Area Middle Canyon is located on the eastern slope of the Whetstone Mountains in Cochise and Pima Counties, Arizona (Fig. 1). The area is bordered on the south by French Joe Canyon and on the north by Cain Canyon, both of which trend approximately east-west. To the west of Middle Canyon are French Joe Canyon and Apache Peak. The area mapped occupies sections 26, 27, 28, 33, 34, and 35, and the western half of section 25 of T. 18 S., R. 19 E., Gila and Salt River Baseline and Meridian. It is entirely within the Coronado National Forest and is 70 miles southeast of Tucson, Arizona. Middle Canyon can be reached by traveling 52 miles on Highway 80, and 18 miles on a dirt road to the southwest of Highway 80. An additional mile and a half can be covered by jeep only. Benson, Arizona is the only sizable town near Middle Canyon. Topography Middle Canyon derives its name from its position near the center of the east side of the Whetstone Mountains (PI. VH).

Toomey, III, and Ginger Nolan Kartchner Caverns State Park, Arizona State Parks, Benson, AZ Abstract—Cave temperature and moisture levels are important factors in the environmental health of Kartchner Caverns. Monitoring indicates the cave has warmed and moisture levels have fallen over the past 14 years. Timing and patterns of change within the cave suggest that changes are due to development as a show cave. However, changes in other caves, surface temperature and precipitation, and in shallow local aquifers suggest that cave changes relate to regional patterns. Changes at Kartchner Caverns represent a combination of anthropogenic and regional natural causes. Separating these different factors is an important on-going goal in protecting the cave.     CORONADO NATIONAL FOREST FIRE MANAGEMENT PLAN Reviewed and Updated by _/s/ Chris Stetson ___________ Date __5/18/10 __________ Coronado Fire Management Plan Interagency Federal fire policy requires that every area with burnable vegetation must have a Fire Management Plan (FMP). This FMP provides information concerning the fire process for the Coronado National Forest and compiles guidance from existing sources such as but not limited to, the Coronado National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP), national policy, and national and regional directives. The potential consequences to firefighter and public safety and welfare, natural and cultural resources, and values to be protected help determine the management response to wildfire. Firefighter and public safety are the first consideration and are always the priority during every response to wildfire. The following chapters discuss broad forest and specific Fire Management Unit (FMU) characteristics and guidance. Chapter 1 introduces the area covered by the FMP, includes a map of the Coronado National Forest, addresses the agencies involved, and states why the forest is developing the FMP. Chapter 2 establishes the link between higher-level planning documents, legislation, and policies and the actions described in FMP. Chapter 3 articulates specific goals, objectives, standards, guidelines, and/or desired future condition(s), as established in the forest’s LRMP, which apply to all the forest’s FMUs and those that are unique to the forest’s individual FMUs. Rock-chip samples from mineral zones were assayed; assay data are tabulated. Meta~i'ic "mineral deposits are genetically and spatially related to two intrusions that cut or underlie I Paleozoic-age sedimentary rocks. One deposit is a 22 million short ton inferred resource of 0.31 percent copper in veinlets and disseminations of sulfide minerals;-past production has been very small. A Precambrian-agequartz-monzonite/alaskite intrusion hosts a I fluorite vein, several quartz-tungsten veins, and sparse, uraniferous fractures. No re- sources of those commodities are present.

    Southeastern Arizona-Trip V-2 GENERAL GEOLOGY OF SOUTHEASTERN ARIZONA TRIP V, ROAD LOG (C ontinue d) Second Day -- Ap ril 6, 1959 Leaders: E. B. Mayo and W. D. Pye Driving Distance: 225. 7 miles Logged Distance: 216. 9 miles Starting Time : 7:00 A. M. General Statement: The route leads northward, along the axis of Sulphur Spring s Valley to Elfrida. From Elfrida the course is westward to the southe rn Dragoon Mountains and the old mining camps of Gleeson and Courtland. It will then continue northward along Sulphur Spring s Valley, finally turning eastward to ascend the out­ wash apron of the Chiricahua Mountains. The route will then head northward and northeastward over Apache Pas s, and on to Bowie and State Highway 86. From Bowie the route is southwestward to Willcox, then along the no rthern margin of Willcox Playa. It ascends southwestward past the northern edge of the Red Bird Hills, pas ses betwe en the Gunnison Hills and Steele Hill s, crosses the Little Dragoon Mountains via Texas Canyon, and de scends to Benson on the San Pedro River. Beyond Benson the highway asc ends we stward betw een the Whetstone Mountain s on the south and the Rincons on the north to Mountain View, and on to Tucson. The party will see: (1) the thrust blocks, intrusions and abandoned mining camps of the southern Dragoon Mountains; (2) some of the volcanic rocks of the northern Chiricahua Mountains ; (3) the Precam­ brian granite and the Cretaceous and Paleozoic sections in Apache Pass; (4) Willcox Playa, lowe st part of Sulphur Sp ring s Valley; (5) the Paleozoic section of the Gunnison Hills, and the young er Precambrian Apache and Paleozoic sequences of the Little Dragoon Mountains; (6) the porphyritic granite of Texas Canyon; and (7) the steeply-dipping Miocene (?) Pantano beds west of Benson.
