Well it wasn’t the start to the season we had in mind as far as the on field results go, with all 3 teams going down to The Raggies out at Athelstone. We won’t dwell of these results too much as we know the Coaching and playing groups are proud individuals, and will have some fire in their belly’s ready to take on Boardview. Thank you again to all individuals and companies for getting behind the Kings and sponsoring players of any of the greater sponsorship level amounts. All of your support goes towards keeping to club going and the players fit and well with the help of the physios. Please don’t forget to add the “Team App” on to your phones to keep up to date with the latest scores, leader positions and club events for season 2017. We have another triple header to tomorrow at Broadview oval. It would be great to see plenty of Green supporters out there cheering on all 3 grades. C-grade: 10:15am B-Grade: 12:15pm A-Grade: 2:15pm Also: just a quick little congratulations to my Co-President Jack Berry on tying the knot to the lovely Clemmie last Saturday. If you see him around, congratulations him and he might buy you a beer. Looking forward to having him back on deck after Easter. Regards, Jack and Luke Co-Presidents. -3- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday April 7th 2017 Round 2 - Broadview Away ROUND 1 VS A GRADE REPORT Goal Kickers T. Pengelly Pembroke Kings 2.0-12 2.1-13 3.4-22 5.7-37 It wasn’t exactly the start we were after on Saturday at Athelstone, and one which I didn’t see coming following our good practice match form. We were outplayed by a much better team on the day, and have plenty to work on going into this week’s clash at Broadview. We didn’t pressure the opposition around the ball enough and we defended poorly which allowed them to run into countless open goals. When we did get our hands on the ball, we didn’t work hard enough to provide an option and our skill level was appalling. Saturday’s team included 4 club debutants and another 4 players who have less than 10 games of A-grade experience between them, and while this is not an excuse, it is important to acknowledge that it is going to take a little time to get to the point where we play the way we want to play on autopilot. While we didn’t have too many winners on the day, Matthew Falzon, Luke Davey, Charles Canny, Alex Holbrook, Henry Nicholson and Jaiden Pengelly can hold their heads high. We are looking forward to a much more even spread of contributors this week, in an effort to get on the board in Season 2017. Pepper Pembroke Kings 0.5-5 1.7-13 1.8-14 5.10-40 The BKings made the familiar journey out to Athelstone under cloudy but still skies. Max Amber sports field looked spot on, no mud on the flanks and sporting some taller goal posts. In the past many a ruckman or high flying forward could have impaled themselves on these posts. We were confident that with a mix of speed, fitness and experience we were going to get the job done. We may have if we had added accuracy to that. Our poor kicking at goal let us down for the 1st quarter and a bit, then our intensity and desire let us down for the next 2 quarters. In the final quarter we showed some fight and regained some respectability on the scoreboard. Best players were hard to come by but our captain BustaB and new to club Tom O’Flaherty showed fight all day and should hold their heads high. Some quick analysis pointed to a few contributors. We had no goals at Haslam to practice kicking a sausage roll, our trials were difficult with 40+ players each game trying to get a run and we only had 7 of last year’s GF team playing. The team was unsettled. Broadview like us copped a walloping last week, so they will be looking for a confidence building win. As for us, we will tweak the team, try out a few different players and also be looking for a confidence building win. Chin up, we have 17 rounds to go! Gill Pembroke Kings 3.1-19 4.5-29 4.7-31 5.10-40 In my first formal appearance as coach of the C Grade, my nerves were well and truly present. After a Friday night of tossing and turning with minimal sleep, it was finally time to slip the whiteboard under my arm, roll up to Athelstone with latte in hand, and trust that we were up for the challenge. We lined with a considerable amount of young talent, sprinkled with a few wiser, experienced operators across the ground. Walking into the change rooms, I was greeted by several handsome, but baby faced gurus, salivating over the thought of getting their first whiff of an amateur football victory. I managed to put a pre-game speech together which seemed to arouse the determination of the team, and we accordingly started the game strongly. John ‘Zippy’ Zavos delivered the Lit Grade’s first goal of 2017, with a punt which seemed to turn in several directions all at once – it wasn’t pretty, but it certainly got the team and coach well and truly excited; we remained so for the majority of the game. There were occasions that we would move the ball quickly where we generated scoring opportunities and looked dangerous. Despite this, our skills let us down at times, both in the field and in front of goals. Being a young team, it also took a while for us to become accustomed to the physicality of some of the oafs we opposed. We maintained a short lead throughout most of the game. In the last minute however, the Raggies managed to fluke a quick movement into their forward 50, which resulted in a mark being taken before the siren. Unfortunately for us, the chap kicked the goal to put them in front. Holding back tears, and questioning my will to live following this heartbreak, I consoled the troops on their loss. We opened the season with a valiant effort, but certainly have our work cut out for us if we are to match it with the best this year – which we will.
