Another year done and dusted. Last Saturday at Sacred Heart wasn’t the best end to the year. We unfortunately finished the day... and the season with 3 defeats. Seeing none of our teams in the finals for the first time in many years is tough to stomach. We always knew that the step up to Div 2 would be a tough one and losing many older and experienced heads after last years premiership added to the already difficult task. Nevertheless, we drop back down to Div 3 along with fellow college friends Scotch OC, and look forward to the 2018 season and rebuilding things on field. To add to an already tough year, the club says goodbye to both our A and B grade coaches; Jimmy Allan and Jim Pinkney. Jim is stepping aside due to an increase in family size, and therefore commitments and also work demands. Jimmy is seeking coaching opportunities at a higher level. We thank both men for their service to the Kings over the past two years in the coaching department and wish them the best of luck in the future. Jack and myself are now on the hunt for their replacements and ill leave no stone unturned in finding the right fit for the club. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone on September 29th for the End of Season Dinner at Adelaide oval. Tickets are available on Trybooking.com by searching “Pembroke Kings and Queens End Of Season Dinner”. After plenty of rain during the week, we were greeted with sunshine, a picturesque deck and the best away changerooms known to man. We were also greeted by a well-drilled football side, tuning up for finals action. As has been a bit of a theme for us this season, we showed that when we pressure the opposition and execute our skills we are quite dangerous against any opposition. Unfortunately, we were unable to maintain our pressure for four quarters, our skills really let us down on occasions and, as has become a constant battle, we found it very difficult to hit the scoreboard. In my view the 82-point loss wasn’t a true reflection of the game, however it indicates just how good you need to be to compete at Division 2 level and the reality is we were a long way off for much of the season. I would just like to thank all of the players, board members, coaches, medical staff, trainers, sponsors and supporters for their support during the year. While it hasn’t been the year we were after on-field, the Kings community is still a great one to be involved in and that’s because of the fantastic people involved at the club. I wish everybody all the best going forward and urge the players never to be content with where they are at. Always strive for more! So we did finish off ok winning 2 of the last 3 games of the year to salvage something from a very inconsistent year. How inconsistent? Well we had 61 players by my count who pulled on a jumper, no one played every game & the last game of the year was the only game that the initially named squad actually played. A challenging year, but there were some highlights & fun times had throughout the season that do make it worthwhile. The final game of the year was realistically a dead rubber against SHOC who were unmovably perched at 2nd spot on the ladder & with nothing to really gain from playing us, other than scraping through unharmed for the finals series. BKings on the other hand were looking to win 3 on the trot, knocking over a few SHOC players & knocking back a few beverages post game, so plenty to play for there. For the first half we were right with them despite the scoreboard attendants attempts to put us off by displaying the wrong score consistently. We were in & at them, got some match ups right & were having a crack. Then the big Duhne who was rucking very well was red carded just before half time for allegedly showing his fist to a player in a scrummage & that left us 1 payer down for the next 10 minutes. For that 10 minutes it was all about stoppage after stoppage & keeping it in tight, which we did extremely well until the replacement player came back on & we for some reason lost all structure & leaked more goals in 10 minutes than we had in the 54 before. At the end of the game SHOC went out winners by 60 points. The backline were well represented in the best, with Zander Dean being very serviceable at half back with partner in crime Stirling Reeve rebounding & settling the team numerous times. The little master Michael Fischer continued his good form & had a cracking first half & new forward on the block Nick Bentley managed to kick 75% of our teams score in a solid display down forward. The other best on ground as the cracking change room that SHOC’s have, best by far that I have ever seen at amateur level. Well that is it for now & a while. Thank you to all the players, trainers, drink runners, committee, presidents, volunteers & supporters for putting together season 2017 & stay safe everyone till preseason starts again in late October. We came out and applied ourselves to the contest; winning the hard ball, and really asserting an element of aggression at the footy. We were always within two goals all day, but unfortunately went down by a goal in the end. Honourable mentions to brad warren, Sam Carrithers and Jono Evans for strong performances. A massive thanks to everyone who has filled a spot within the team throughout the year, assisted in any way off the field or simply came out to support us. We are looking forward to some serious success in 2018! Enjoy the offseason. Port Adelaide On field goal for 2018? Breaking my wrist in round 2 and spending 10-12 weeks off playing footy this year was a big setback and my confidence in my body, and subsequently my form, definitely suffered once I returned in the last few weeks of the season. So my goal for next year is to definitely get back to playing some good footy. Off field goal for 2018? Off field goal would definitely be getting back to the fitness level required to play footy competitively. I noticed on my return from injury I couldn’t run out games like I used to. Fitness is something I pride myself on and that’s something plan to get back in the off season. Who will win the 2017 AFL Grand Final? Tough one, don’t want to say Adelaide but they’d be hard to beat... GWS or Sydney as outsiders. You played your 50th game for the Kings last weekend, congratulations! What does the milestone mean to you? Cheers, yea I feel its about time actually haha, um in the last 3 years I’ve missed about 20 odd games of footy through injury, so should be up to about 70 by now, so its definitely nice to get there! I am told you are quite the triathlete.
