In what was an improvement from the week before, The A and B-grades fought hard but unfortunately went down by 13 and 48 points respectively. The C-grade notched their second win in a row with a goal after the siren to secure the 2 points with a gritty 5-point win in what was a fantastic result for Michael and his players. This week we take on PHOS Camden in what proves to be another tough challenge for the Kings but one I know they’re up for! The A and B-grades, after three home games will travel to take on the Phantoms whilst the C-grade will enjoy a return to Haslam Oval. Last weekend saw the annual Kings Cash Raffle take place with Alex Breda taking home the cash. It was a great turnout and we thank those players, parents and supporters who purchased a ticket and especially thank Alex Jarvis for his efforts in organising the event. Next Saturday, the 15th of July, is the Pembroke Kings Ladies Day. There will be a fashion show, espresso martini’s on arrival as well as plenty of nibbles and drinks throughout the day. Any Mums, sisters, wives, partners or friends wishing to attend, please follow the instructions on the flyer below. We have finalised our wine sale for this year and are pleased to offer you some fantastic Bird in Hand wines at a special price for Kings supporters. Again, all the information is on the flyer below so please follow the instructions, purchase as much wine as you like and we will deliver it to you. Thank you for your on going support this year, we look forward to seeing you this weekend. Kings v PHOS B-grade at Camden Oval, 12:15pm A-grade at Camden Oval, 2:15pm C-grade at Haslam Oval, 2:15pm Its good to be green! Curnow, S. Fischer Gaza 2.4-16 9.4-58 11.9-75 12.13-85 The focus for the group on Saturday was to ‘own the football’ and bring the effort and tackle pressure required against quality sides in this competition like Gaza. A big part of this centred around our work at stoppages, so the midfield group was challenged to get their hands on it first to give our forwards chances to score and to stop the ball coming into our backline quickly. The mids responded to the challenge, as I thought they would, and we held the ascendency around the footy for most of the day. Gaza was able to kick away to a handy lead by half time but I felt that if we could tidy up our work at ball ups in our defensive 50 - they scored 3 goals from this situation - then we would be able to work our way right back into the match. The third quarter saw us play some of our best football for the year. Only inaccuracy in front of goal stopped us going into the last change ahead. After kicking the first goal of the final term the belief in the group grew and we again had opportunities to put pressure on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, we weren’t quite able to get over the line, on a day where there were plenty of positives and lessons learned for our young playing group. Our players and supporters should rightfully be proud of the boys’ effort on the day but I don’t think we should be happy to accept an ‘honourable’ loss. Good teams don’t accept that and I honestly felt we were the better team for much of the game. We controlled the play for long periods and if we come to play with the same desire more consistently, we are going to be a very hard side to beat. Looking forward to a similar effort and better result this week against PHOS Camden. Jimmy Allan A grade Coach -6- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday July 8th 2017 Round 13 - PHOS Camden Away ROUND 12 VS B GRADE REPORT Goal Kickers S. Carruthers Broadview 2.4-16 7.5-47 9.13-67 15.15-105 What a difference a few weeks makes in footy, from the highs of beating 4th placed Athelstone to the lows of losing to bottom side GAZA at home. This time of year is always a challenge for the club with uni exams, injuries, sickness & either the pull of warmer weather or snow to contend with & this year was no different. With half the team from the prior week seemingly not available for BKings to select, those playing got an opportunity to play different roles & for some their first game at BKing level. We matched it with GAZA in the first quarter, drifted off the pace in second, were awful in the third & were defeated in the last. The result quite simply reflected the effort, they wanted the footy more & were cleaner by hand & foot. Very good for the BKings was Beno Holbrook who took advantage of the outs to twist & spin his way in & out of trouble much of the day as well as using the pill well. Jason Raz found his sticky hands at CHF & provided a valuable lead up option to the fast moving Neville Smith at HBF who toiled all day to rebound GAZA’s forward entries. Simmo joined us from the A grade for a run through the middle & showed many how to use the ball in close & BKings clever debutant Somersby Sam found space in the forward 50 & chipped in with 3 handy goals & probably should have kicked a few more. Cool & potentially wet conditions look to be on the menu for Saturday down at PHOS & they will be looking to rebound from a poor outing against Athelstone. Their C grade forfeited last week, so maybe they have a few out as well that could make it an interesting scrap. The team which wins the contested footy will likely win & let’s hope that no BKings leaves the game with a clean jumper & shorts. We were blessed with the presence of 6 or 7 fresh-faced, adolescent, passionate and competent school students, who each played an important role in our day. Our midfield stocks were concerningly low from the outset. Coach had to roll the dice and what a roll that was – throwing Hammer ‘Clearance King’ Trenowden and Tom ‘The Robe Rhino’ Sneath into the guts. The pair both played exceptional games, considering their collective lack of experience in this position. Down back, our main man Mr Brad ‘Matty Scarlett’ Warren was rock solid as ever, intercepting marks all day.

These are important evenings for the boys, families and staff of this level. All students who attend our College are first and foremost young men of Whitefriars. We want every boy who enters our gates each day to be free to be themselves, participate in the life of the College and feel supported along the way. That is why having a strong sense of connection is such an important resilience factor for adolescents. This sense of connection extends into each of the Houses to which the boys belong. Year 7 students are learning about life through their own experience and through the words and deeds of older boys. It was lovely to see these older students at each of our House Mass and Dinner gatherings so far. They have presented themselves in a very gentle and assured way. These evenings are also a good opportunity to hear from parents about how their sons have transitioned to Whitefriars from their various primary school settings. We have been very pleased with the comments heard to date.

Another year done and dusted. Last Saturday at Sacred Heart wasn’t the best end to the year. We unfortunately finished the day... and the season with 3 defeats. Seeing none of our teams in the finals for the first time in many years is tough to stomach. We always knew that the step up to Div 2 would be a tough one and losing many older and experienced heads after last years premiership added to the already difficult task. Nevertheless, we drop back down to Div 3 along with fellow college friends Scotch OC, and look forward to the 2018 season and rebuilding things on field. To add to an already tough year, the club says goodbye to both our A and B grade coaches; Jimmy Allan and Jim Pinkney. Jim is stepping aside due to an increase in family size, and therefore commitments and also work demands. Jimmy is seeking coaching opportunities at a higher level. We thank both men for their service to the Kings over the past two years in the coaching department and wish them the best of luck in the future. Jack and myself are now on the hunt for their replacements and ill leave no stone unturned in finding the right fit for the club.
