From the Principal Mr John Finn Principal

We are now in the middle phase of the Year 7 House Mass and Dinners. These are important evenings for the boys, families and staff of this level. All students who attend our College are first and foremost young men of Whitefriars. We want every boy who enters our gates each day to be free to be themselves, participate in the life of the College and feel supported along the way. That is why having a strong sense of connection is such an important resilience factor for adolescents. This sense of connection extends into each of the Houses to which the boys belong. Year 7 students are learning about life through their own experience and through the words and deeds of older boys. It was lovely to see these older students at each of our House Mass and Dinner gatherings so far. They have presented themselves in a very gentle and assured way. These evenings are also a good opportunity to hear from parents about how their sons have transitioned to Whitefriars from their various primary school settings. We have been very pleased with the comments heard to date. The College Athletics Carnival took place at the recently renamed Tom Kelly Athletic Track in Doncaster. We are delighted that Tom’s work with young people over so many years has been recognised in such a prominent way. Well done to all of our students who attended in very high numbers, participated competitively and enjoyed the day as a whole. A particular mention should be made of our senior students who set a positive tone. Our Class of 2013 re-gathered in the familiar surrounds of the Canteen Decking last Friday evening. The fact that so many were in attendance speaks well of their disposition towards the College and their desire to reconnect. We are seeking to establish strong long term links with all of our Old Collegians. All Catholic secondary schools are now finalising their enrolments for 2016. As part of this process Whitefriars will be interviewing prospective families on Saturday. We will be seeking to offer as many places as possible according to our criteria. We have found that some siblings have not yet been enrolled for next year. If this is the case, we ask that you contact our Development Office as soon as possible. One of the many events occurring now is the House Music Festival. This has been an engaging series of lunchtime acts where Houses are represented in group and solo categories. The event has seen some amazing talents emerge whilst also building on previous reputations. Well done to the many boys who have entertained us to date. The Council of International Schools conducts its membership visit to Whitefriars next week. This means that the College will expose itself to International benchmark standards should membership be granted. We are hopeful that our visitors will see us as being of true merit within the process. A report on the visit will be given in our next edition. Congratulations to the large number of Year 8 fathers who are attending the Father/Son program this week. This follows the successful inaugural running of the Mothers/Son program in Year 7 last year. We are confident that the program will be worthy of the time investment of our families.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Aaron (11E2) and Nick Canil (8E6) on the recent passing of their paternal grandmother Ada Canil. May she rest in peace. Almae In Fide Parentis - In the Care of a Loving Mother.

From our Captains

2015 College Captains - Joel Monteiro, Middle Years Captain, James Reidy, Vice Captain, Lachlan Mahon, Captain, and Matthew Zema, Vice Captain As the end of term 1 nears, we still have plenty of great events and activities at the College.

This week, the College held a special and memorable night for fathers and sons. This was the first of its kind and it was a terrific evening. It is known as ‘Time and Space for STEPPING UP’ and it signifies the best ways a father’s son can ‘step up’ to be an inspiring and grown man in the footsteps of their own father.

This program is especially organised for Year 8 Students and their father or guardian. Fathers willing to

be actively involved can play an important role in the lives of their sons. Other male role models may TIME & SPACE FOR add to a boy’s understanding of manhood, but a father is the most important connection in a boy’s life. It was a night to remember and was a huge success, full of fun times and great memories! As they say the closest role models are the ones closest to home.

A reminder to all students to keep up the generous donations coming with any second hand footy boots that are no longer needed. These are to be handed in to either Br. Sean’s office or the P.E. Office. All sizes will be accepted. These footy boots will be donated to the less-fortunate kids in Timor-Leste, who will greatly appreciate your donation and guaranteed to put a smile on their faces. So if you have any old boots at home sitting around not doing much, please donate. It’s all to support the great kids in Timor-Leste.

Mathematics Week - Theme: Pi This week, Maths Week – Pi, was celebrated down in the Undercroft. Activities included the annual Chess Challenge, Online Rice Challenge, the ‘Activity Captains Maths Quiz’ and concluded with a presentation from Swinburne University on ‘Maths @ Swinburne’. The activities were extremely well supported by students. Of particular note was the Online Rice Challenge where around 50 students came together to help answer maths questions to end world hunger – every correct answer would see the World Food Program donate rice to help those less fortunate than ourselves – Well done to Mr Charlie Garzia in particular who orchestrated this event on behalf of the boys.

I would also like to acknowledge Mr. Teggelove and Mrs Akers for organising the various activities and challenges. Lastly, I would like to commend the efforts of John Laidlaw (Maths Captain) for his support and bringing the whole week together. The faculty’s next enrichment activity is the CAT Competition (Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition) – Stay tuned for more details from Mrs Liz Moloney (Maths Enrichment Facilitator) regarding this event. English Enrichment Programming Last week we launched our English Enrichment Program for gifted and talented students in Years 8, 9 and 10. These programs have been designed in such a way to enable selected students to work with Mrs Lyn Power (Years 9 and 10) and Mrs Linda Whitby (Year 8) and other able students to extend and enrich their skills, knowledge and understanding of English. The program involves students being withdrawn from class three times a term for the remainder of the year in groups of 14 -20 students.

In our first session this week with the Year 9 and 10s, Mrs Lyn Power took students through Language Extension Activities and Reading and Responding to Texts with a particular focus on broadening their experience of literature and writing possibilities. Mrs Linda Whitby introduced Year 8s to Language in Advertising – a theme based unit for Term 1 looking at the exploration of language in Magazines, TV ads, YouTube Clips, Newspapers and Websites.

I encourage all students involved in these programs to make the most of this opportunity and hope it is a worthwhile and engaging experience. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions concerning these programs.

Healesville Sanctuary excursion On Monday 2 March, our Bridging class went to Healesville Sanctuary for an excursion. We travelled there by bus and arrived about 10 o’clock.

First, we went to the Platypus Centre. The platypuses were cute and lively and they swam around the pool and scratched their tummy. After that we visited the emus. We fed them with fruit and veggies and they enjoyed them a lot.

Then we went to see the brush-tailed rock-wallabies and the kangaroos. One of the kangaroos had a baby in her pouch. We visited the Tasmanian Devils and Wombats. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any Tasmanian Devils, but I saw two big wombats. The wombats didn’t move very much and they slept a lot.

Another amazing show we saw was the Spirits of the Sky bird show. The show was wonderful, the birds did many difficult tricks which really impressed me. I liked the big Wedge Tail Eagle the most because he was strong and cool.

I had a very good day, it was great!

Late last year, Sister Jane Remson, President and CEO of the Carmelite NGO, wrote an article in the Carmelite Review called “Caring for Creation: Our Responsibility”. She touches on society’s attitudes and actions on climate change and the effect this will have on future generations. She states that “environmental problems present themselves in different ways to different people. Some identify environmental problems with population growth, economic growth, urban population, poverty and sustainable development.” She reflects on the relationship between nature and economics and how too often there is a widening gap between the two. How can a GDP be measured will ignoring natural capital? She urges that there needs to be a “redirection of our relationship with nature as to promote a sustainable pattern of economic and social development.” Sister Jane Remson message of nurturing the world is in line with Pope Francis’ belief in regard to climate change. And that is “Respect for the beauty of nature and the grandeur of the cosmos is a Christian value, that failure to care for the planet risks apocalyptic consequences. Safeguard creation because if we destroy creation, creation will destroy us! Never forget this!” As a Carmelite school, the philosophy of walking gently on this earth will be explored this year using sustainable programs of awareness and action.

Thank you to Sandra Kennedy and Kenneth Ting for their help in picking blackberries in the College’s bushland last Tuesday. Whilst the College does have a weed problem with blackberry bushes, during the late summer there is abundant fruit. After the fruit was picked, it was washed and offered for staff to take home.

Government House

Parker, Carter, Ray and myself represented Whitefriars-College at Government House Victoria, which was lead by Mrs Fields. It was such a good weather, we left school early and arrived at Government House at 9.15am. Government House has a big garden and is normally protected by security, but today, students who represented their school were invited in, for a welcome ceremony for International students. At the beginning, a speaker gave a welcome speech to all the international students, then a student band from other schools performed a wonderful show for all the attendees. The warm welcome made all the international students feel happy. After the welcome we enjoyed a morning tea for all the attendees, and were invited to take a visit around Government House. Mrs Fields lead our school students and introduced them to some knowledge about the Government leaders and the Queen. Though it was an unforgettable experience, nice times always pass quickly. We returned back at noon and continued with our study. This wonderful experience encouraged us to have more energy and courage to study.

Jazz is Alive A group of Whitefriars students have taken their love of Jazz beyond the school gates. Formed in February 2014, “About Blue” featuring Gabriel Sotomayor, Manning Peart, David Martini, Nick Bredhauer and Lachlan Green, performed for the first time in public at the Young Guns Festival on 18 October 2014 – which they won. This result led them to being asked to perform as the Feature Act at the Young Guns Christmas Festival on 20 December.

The band has kicked off 2015 with winning Heat 7 of The Espy’s Artist Showdown on 18 January. On Sunday 22 February, they performed in the Semi Final – the result is yet to be announced.

Lisieux presents to The Reach Foundation On Wednesday the 25 March, at Lisieux’s House Assembly, we welcomed two guests from our House Charity Organisation, The Reach Foundation, and presented Jake and Jack with a substantial cheque. This money was raised by the students of Lisieux House via gracious contributions in last year’s House Raffle and Pastoral Care activities.

For those of you who may not be aware, The Reach Foundation is an organisation who aim to improve the wellbeing of young people, so that they can be healthy and resilient in order to deal with life’s everyday challenges. The organisation was founded by Paul Currie and the late . Through encouragement and the workshops that Reach run, no matter what circumstance people are facing in their day to day lives, Reach workshops allow people to believe that they can achieve anything that they dare to dream.

Last Wednesday, Jake and Jack ran a few activities with us during our assembly, testing the bravery and courageousness of some amongst our cohort. Some of the students involved were Christian Belia of L1, Jack Roughsedge of L6, and Jack Zita of L3, who are to be commended, as well as the many other students who contributed to the activities. At the end of the assembly we presented Jake and Jack with a cheque for a grand total of $2026.40.

Jake and Jack were blown away with such a tremendous amount of money the Lisieux students and staff were able to raise. As House Captain of Lisieux, I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to Lisieux House staff and students for their incredible support to our House charity.

Ms Simone Pollock Library News Teacher - Librarian

As we have settled into the term, the Library has been bustling with students coming in to enjoy the variety of resources and opportunities available. There are regularly boys who come in and make use of the private study area so that they can get ahead – or catch up – on school work. With a librarian always on hand, there is always somebody who can be asked for assistance if required. Students also use the space to complete group work, making it a useful and time saving approach as they don’t need to meet up outside of school. Mornings find many boys availing themselves to the daily newspapers, some TV watching, last minute school work and research, the chance to borrow a new book to read, as well as a game of chess or two. The Library is open from 8.15am until 4.15pm. All students are encouraged to come by and enjoy the location.

During the past week, the Library has also seen a reintroduction of its Book Club. The students are meeting each Wednesday at lunch time and will discuss their chosen reading options, review books and contribute to review sites. They will also be given input into which new books they would like to see in the Library. It is wonderful to see their enthusiasm and interest. All students are welcome to join the club. Please see Ms Powling for further details. Mrs Linda Whitby, Literacy and Learning Resource Adviser

Mr Gavin Kellar Sports Report Faculty Head - Sport

“On 11 March, the Whitefriars 1st XI headed to St Bedes for a do or die clash in attempt to qualify for the Grand Final next Wednesday. With a few outs due to injury and camp, we showed our depth to be able to once again field an extremely strong team. Our performance was one of a team who have been threatening to play good cricket all year, and on this day we performed well out of our skin. Acting Captain Liam Smith, led the boys well in the field, leading us to rock and roll St Bedes for a poultry total of 58 with exceptional performances with the ball and in the field from all players. We comfortably chased the score 4 wickets down to secure a deserved spot in the Grand Final on Wednesday the 18 March. Hopefully we can get a full team on the park next week, and have a crack at bringing the flag home for Whitefriars.

The 2nd XI also have qualified for the Grand Final next week, and this is I believe, the first time at Whitefriars that both teams have been in the Grand Final… hopefully we can go the double for the first time ever at the College and finish off an extremely successful year of Senior cricket at WFC.” Evan Smeed, Cricket Captain

Congratulations to Nathan Santamaria who was selected as Goal Keeper for the Victorian under 16 VCFA side that competed in the soccer CFFA National Titles at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation. They finished in third place. From this competition Nathan was selected to compete in a team of the carnival side against International teams in the Melbourne Friendship Cup from January 17-21, 2015. This side played against teams from Brazil, Africa, New Zealand and Argentina; and finished runners up in the Plate Final.

Finally I would like to wish our Senior 1st XII and Senior 2nd XII cricket sides, as well as our Senior Volleyball A and B sides; the best of luck as they compete for Senior ACC premierships next Wednesday. It is a fantastic achievement for these four sides and their coaches to all make grand finals and we hope that their hard work throughout the season pays off.
