After a few months of this, my lovely daughter stopped reading. We tried most of the “first chapter books” that people recommend; all met with disinterest. So I asked her exactly what she wanted in a “proper book”. After much though, she wrote down: “Dragons, princess, zombies, vampires, ghosts, but not spiders and it should be funny and scary and have fighting in it.” We couldn’t find such a book with concepts and vocabulary suitable for a six year old – so I wrote one. I had written novels before, but not a children’s book, so I had help from my daughter to find the right level.

These are important evenings for the boys, families and staff of this level. All students who attend our College are first and foremost young men of Whitefriars. We want every boy who enters our gates each day to be free to be themselves, participate in the life of the College and feel supported along the way. That is why having a strong sense of connection is such an important resilience factor for adolescents. This sense of connection extends into each of the Houses to which the boys belong. Year 7 students are learning about life through their own experience and through the words and deeds of older boys. It was lovely to see these older students at each of our House Mass and Dinner gatherings so far. They have presented themselves in a very gentle and assured way. These evenings are also a good opportunity to hear from parents about how their sons have transitioned to Whitefriars from their various primary school settings. We have been very pleased with the comments heard to date.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Victorian Kickstart jumper was redesigned from the previous jumper to more appropriately represent Victoria. The Big V is iconic on Victorian state jumpers, therefore the ‘Big V ’on the Kickstart jumper was important. Boomerangs have been included to represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures. Reaching from the AFL Victoria logo is a path going down to the meeting place and then another path up to the Nationals and the Flying Boomerangs. The Possum was identified as a Victorian animal, which is why the possum footprints were chosen to represent the path. At the bottom of the jumpers is a symbol representing a meeting place where all of the boys come together and unite as one and represent the Victorian Kickstart teams. We acknowledge Todd Garner for the jumper design. We also thank all photographers for providing the photos.     VFL Round 1 14 - 17 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes New VFL season begins Welcome to season 2017 in the Peter Jackson VFL. Plenty has happened since last September when Footscray was crowned premier. We have seen 13 VFL players provided with an AFL opportunity, selected in the 2016 NAB AFL national and rookie draft s. Casey and Geelong both produced three draft ees, with Coburg, Footscray and North Ballarat providing two draft ees each. The pleasing aspect has been seeing the likes of Tom Stewart, Mitch Hannan, Robbie Fox and Tim Smith debut in the early rounds of the AFL season. The competition this year will feature 14 clubs, with Frankston not provided a VFL licence for the 2017 season. The club has had a rich history of providing a pathway and opportunities for footballers in the region – none more evident than the debut for Sydney in recent weeks of 2014 Fothergill-Round Medal winner Nic Newman. However, it was decided at the end of last year that without the necessary off -field structures in place, AFL Victoria was not confident financial projections provided by the club could be met. We have a strong willingness to ensure there is a VFL presence in the region into the future, but it must be viable and sustainable both on and off the field in the long term. This has been highlighted in the regular communication AFL Victoria has had with the new board at the club. In other pre-season news, at the VFL Season Launch last week we revealed there will be a triple-header of matches for the 2017 Victorian state league Grand Final day at Etihad Stadium on Sunday September 24.
