Oran Department of Biological Sciences, University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan. Received 3 July, 2014; Accepted 25 February, 2016 Listing and describing plant diversity in terms of the status of flowering vascular plants in Al-Balqa Governorate (North West Amman/Jordan) has been evaluated. Collections of plant specimens have been made during the field trips that have been conducted, in order to study and evaluate the composition and the diversity of the flowering wild plants in Al-Balqa Governorate. A total number of 527 species belonging to 296 genera and 61 families have been recorded. A number of 91 medicinal plants are recorded; some examples are known as medicinal plants like: Arum palaestinum, Achillea santolina, Carduus australis, and others. Poisonous plants such as Retama raetam, Solanum luteum, Ferula communis etc. were also recorded. A number of 30 recorded species are considered as endemic such as Daucus carota and Apium nodiflorum, and some others are known as edible plant species like: Salvia hierosolymitana, Gundelia tournefortii, Eruca sativa etc. a number of 25 species are endangered such as: Gundelia tournefortii, Sinapis alba, Sternbergia clusiana and Cistus creticus. Some reported species are rare like: Lactuca serriola, Varthemia iphionoides, Echium judaeum, Lupinus varius, Iris atrophosca and others. Deciduous Oak (Quercus ithaburensis) forest is occurring in the study area mixed with remnants of wild olive (Olea europaea), and with shrubs such as Crataegus azarolus, and a wild almond tree (Amygdalus communis), also with herbaceous bushes such as Dactylis glomeratus, Urginea maritima, Colchicum hierosolymitanum, Sarcopoterium spinosum, Euphorbia hierosolymitana, Salvia indica, Alcea setosa, and Tulipa stylosa. However the study area is considered as one of the richest geographical area in Jordan in terms of its plant diversity, but unfortunately the area is negatively affected by different factors that are contributing in the habitat loss and degradation. It forms microwoods with a relict character established on screes and detrital coverages, on a variety of lithological substrates (volcanics, limestones, quartzarenites). Based on the phytosociological analysis carried out in the territory, these vegetation aspects are framed in the alliance Oleo-Cerato- nion, within which a new association (Pistacio terebinthi-Celtidetum aetnensis) is described, in turn diversified in the following subassociations: a) typicum subass. nova, on detrital calcareous cones of the north-western part of Sicily, in the Palermo province (Rocca Busambra, Pizzo Castelluzzo and northern slopes of Pizzo Telegrafo); b) phlomidetosum fruticosae subass. nova, typical of carbonate megabreccias, on the most xeric sou- thern slopes of Pizzo Telegrafo (Caltabellotta territory, Agrigento province); c) artemisietosum arborescentis subass. nova, typical of quartza- renitic outcrops on the Nebrodi Mts. inland (Cesarò territory, Messina province); d) rhamnetosum alaterni subass. nova, widespread on cracked lava flows of the western side of Mount Etna (Catania province). True stinging hairs are highly specialized plant structures that are able to inject a physiologically active liquid into the skin and can be differentiated from irritant hairs (causing mechanical damage only). Stinging hairs can be classified into two basic types: Urtica-type stinging hairs with the classical “hypodermic syringe” mechanism expelling only liquid, and Tragia-type stinging hairs expelling a liquid together with a sharp crystal. In total, there are some 650 plant species with stinging hairs across five remotely related plant families (i.e., belonging to different plant orders). The family Urticaceae (order Rosales) includes a total of ca. 150 stinging representatives, amongst them the well-known stinging nettles (genus Urtica). There are also some 200 stinging species in Loasaceae (order Cornales), ca. 250 stinging species in Euphorbiaceae (order Malphigiales), a handful of species in Namaceae (order Boraginales), and one in Caricaceae (order Brassicales). Stinging hairs are commonly found on most aerial parts of the plants, especially the stem and leaves, but sometimes also on flowers and fruits. The ecological role of stinging hairs in plants seems to be essentially defense against mammalian herbivores, while they appear to be essentially inefficient against invertebrate pests.

What now dots every nook and cranny of both my front and backyard, was, more than a decade ago, a gift from America – a small package of Organic Heirloom seeds. Whereas, the Echinacea seeds, from the same gift package, only made it for one season, the Jerusalem sage decided that it had returned from exile to its rightful home. As Dave Ehrlinger, the chief horticulturalist, notes, “True sage has been grown in Israel for thousands of years.” Not as glamorous as Echinacea flowers or as useful as kale – another plant I have not succeeded in making feel welcome – Jerusalem sage is a reliable friend, who is always there for me. It grows year round, even when no other green leaves are to be found anywhere. Although its leaves have a strong, herbaceous flavor, the entire plant is edible and can be used in smoothies, soups, stir- fries, meat dishes or stews.

The flowering plant specimen have been collected from the area and identified. A number of 259 species and 2 subspecies belong to 179 genera and 44 families are recorded. Photographs of some selected common plant species in the study area as well as photographs for some natural views are demonstrated, with emphasis on the topography of the heights that are dominated by forest stands of typically Mediterranean vegetation elements of mixed ever-green and deciduous oak trees of Quercus coccifera and Q. ithaburensis, Amygdalus communis, Crataegus aronia and Pyrus syriaca, shrubs and cultivated tress like, grape vines, Olive trees, fig trees (Ficus indica), pomegranate trees (Punica granatum) and mulberries trees (Morus alba and M. nigra). The study area is blessed by lots of aromatic plant species like Lonicera etrusca, Calicotome villosa, Thymus capitatus, Varthemia iphionoides, Narcissus tazetta and others, orchid species, Mentha aquatica and others. Lots of medicinal plants are also recorded in the study area, that are still used in folk medicine by the local people like Varthemia iphionoides, Arum palaestinum, Vinca herbacea, Dittrichia viscosa,, Achillea santolina, Bongardia chrysogonum, Thymus capitatus and others.

Email: [email protected] Abstract - Medicinal plants are part of the human life for millions of years and they are primary source of medicine for the common man on most of the occasions. The indigenous medicine system of every country is associated with plant and plant products for the treatment of illnesses. The present study has been taken up to review one of the ethno medicinal plants of India i.e. Laportea interrupta L. Chew known as Stinging nettle, for its taxonomical, pharmacological, biochemical characteristics. Key words: Laportea interrupta, Stinging nettle, pharmacological studies, medicinal plants Introduction: Human beings are depending on the plants for the food, shelter, clothing and medical ailments. There is now renowned interest for the plant based drugs due to their less or nil side effect. The academic and research organizations all over the world are focussing on plant research especially for isolation of various compounds from plant and plant products, studying their chemical, pharmaceutical, pharmacological, biochemical characteristics and to make use of these details for intervention of human diseases (1,2). Branched broomrape is a fleshy, parasitic weed that lacks chlorophyll and depends entirely on its host for water and nutrients. It has a wide host range and can survive in six climate classes. It is native to 39 countries and has become naturalized in another 31. Phelipanche ramosa is naturalized in seven states and 35 counties in the United States and is registered as a Federal Noxious Weed. It is a prolific seed producer with almost invisible seeds that can be readily transported long distances in agricultural commodities. Seeds from P. r a mo s a have been intercepted at U.S. ports in general and permitted cargo. Climate models show that Phelipanche species have a high invasive potential in most of the United States. Once P. r a mo s a becomes established, it is almost impossible to eradicate due to the longevity of its seed bank.
