Da= Tara and stable companion Anak Nakal (Victory Gallop) were part of an entry sent off at odds of 17-1 in a seven-furlong Belmont maiden Sept. 28 and both juveniles gave very good accounts of themselves, with Anak Nakal overcoming a bit of trouble to defeat Da= Tara by a length. While the Four Roses runner has seen nothing but graded-stakes company since, the Robert LaPenta colorbearer had been a little slower to come around. Fourth in a two-turn maiden at Calder Dec. 8, the dark bay colt displayed much sharper early speed and took a nine-furlong event in the Gulfstream slop Jan. 5. Third in a one-mile allowance Feb. 22, Da= Tara had his first run-in with Big Brown in the GI Florida Derby Mar. 29, and the results were largely forgettable, as he finished some 23 1/2 lengths adrift of the subse- quent dual Classic winner. Instead of dropping back to allowance company, trainer Nick Zito pressed on with the colt and sent him to Churchill Downs for the Apr. 26 Derby Trial S. and he turned in an improved effort in the 7 1/2-furlong affair, checking in five lengths behind Macho Again (Macho Uno) in fifth. Stretched back out to two turns for his latest, he con- tinued his progressive form, disputing the pace before yielding grudgingly to finish runner-up in the Barbaro S. on the Preakness undercard May 17. By Mike Shutty, HorseRacingNation.com Early Edition HORSE RACING NATION’S KENTUCKY DERBY SUPER SCREENER INTRODUCTION There are countless ways to dissect the probable Kentucky Derby field in search of the ultimate winner. Dosage Index, Dual Qualifier status, pedigree, Speed Ratings, prep race quality, Graded Stakes wins, workouts days before the Derby and a trainer’s Derby record are just a few of the criteria that people use when assessing a field of probable Derby contenders. These types of factors fall in and out of favor over the years and each has had its share of success in helping track down a Kentucky Derby winner. Each year, we are reminded of other important, proven screening criteria we should keep in mind as we handicap the Kentucky Derby. Examples would include the following: • Don’t bet to win on Derby entrants that have never run as a 2 year-old. Most recently, Curlin and Bodemeister tried to overcome this long-standing tenant but both came up a bit short in their respective Kentucky Derby endeavors. • Only one horse (Regret) has ever won the Derby off just 3 lifetime starts (make that only two horses now that Big Brown achieved this feat in 2008) • Post position 20 has never produced a winner (Big Brown busted that one as well and I’ll Have Another won from the 19 hole in 2012 so this screening criteria weakens some as a result) • Must have a final prep race run at the mile and eighth distance (Charismatic was able to break that barrier in winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby as have several second place Derby finishers) • Must

Maria Kurenko and Paule Bailly at the Juilliard School on April 24, 1946) Nicholas Medtner was born in Moscow in January 1880. He tame from one of those Baltic families long settled in Central. Russia for purposes of· trade or business. Nothing seemed to predestine him to become a composer. Yet at the age of 12 music was already so living a force in his life that his parents transferred him from a regular Gymnasium to the famous Conservatory then directed by Safonoff. There was nothing spectacular about his musical endow ment, but step by step he proceeded to master the musical language, for he had definitely chosen it as a medium for the expression of his as yet undeveloped thoughts and emotions. After long years of hard work he graduated from Safonoff's class in piano. In presenting the customary medals and distinctions Safonoff turned to him say ing: "And to you I would give the ,diamond medal, but unfortunately this insti,. tution's highest award is only a gold medal." Safonoff inaugurated a concert tour for him abroad and insisted that he play everywhere the Hammerclavier Sonata of Beethoven. But he went only reluctantly, for he now wanted to de vote himself entirely to composition. Whether it· was now· that he became a pupil of Taneieff in counterpoint, or had studied. with him while learning the piano with Safonoff, is not quite clear.
