  • Serge Gainsbourg
Serge Gainsbourg Serge Gainsbourg (born Lucien Ginsburg;; 2 April 1928 – 2 March 1991) was a French singer, songwriter, pianist, film composer, poet, painter, screenwriter, writer, actor, and director. Regarded as one of the most important figures in French popular music, he was renowned for his often provocative and scandalous releases, as well as his diverse artistic output, which embodied genres ranging from jazz, mambo, world, chanson, pop and yé-yé, to rock and roll, progressive rock, reggae, electronic, disco, new wave, and funk. Gainsbourg's varied musical style and individuality make him difficult to categorize although his legacy has been firmly established and he is often regarded as one of the world's most influential popular musicians. His lyrical works incorporated a vast amount of clever word play to hoodwink the listener, often for humorous, provocative, satirical or subversive reasons. Common types of word play in his songs include mondegreen, onomatopoeia, rhyme, spoonerism, dysphemism, paraprosdokian and pun. Through the course of his career, Gainsbourg wrote over 550 songs,[10][11] which have been covered more than 1,000 times by a wide range of artists. Since his death, Gainsbourg's music has reached legendary stature in France, and he is regarded as one of France’s most revered musicians. He has also gained a cult following in the English- speaking world, with numerous artists influenced by his arrangements. Biography Born in Paris, France, Gainsbourg was the son of Jewish Ukrainian migrants, Joseph Ginsburg (28 December 1898, in Kharkov, now Ukraine then Russian Empire – 22 April 1971) and Olga (née Bessman; 1894 – 16 March 1985), who fled to Paris after the 1917 Russian Revolution.

25th Super Bock Super Rock 18 – 19 – 20 JULY Meco Beach, Sesimbra – South of Lisbon, Portugal New line-up announcement: Charlotte Gainsbourg 19 July, EDP Stage Charlotte Gainsbourg joins Disclosure, Kaytranada, FKJ, Superorganism, The 1975, Metronomy and Lana Del Rey on Super Bock Super Rock's line-up for its 25th edition. The authentic music lovers are already on a countdown to another edition of Super Bock Super Rock. From July 18 to 20, the mythical Portuguese music festival is back to Meco, Sesimbra, in an inviting atmosphere for partying. Most importantly, however, is the Music. After having announced Lana Del Rey, there’s another woman on the line- up who promises to bring all of her talent, class and charm to Portugal: Charlotte Gainsbourg. The French singer performs on the EDP Stage, on July 19. CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG There’s no doubt that Charlotte Gainsbourg’s talent is due solely to her talent but there is a genetic part that should not be overlooked: when you are Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s daughter, it would be difficult not to be born with an artistic vein. Charlotte’s essence is precisely this: we are rocked by an apparent softness at the same time that we’re surprised by an emotional tension that lies only within the reach of the best interpreters. She started out as an actress, one of the best of her generation, but music didn’t come second - it was always present in her career since the age of 13, when she recorded her debut album, “Charlotte For Ever”, an album in which she interprets songs written by her father.

Meet the denizens of New York City: artists, prostitutes, saints, and seers. All are aspiring toward either fame or oblivion, and hoping for love and acceptance. Instead they find high rents, faithless partners, and dead-end careers. But between the disappointments come snatches of self- awareness, and a strange beauty in their encounters with one another. Her coterie of New York artists and grad students, junkies and collectors dwells in walk-ups and covets lofts. The occasional socialite wafts through, characterized tersely by statements of fact; for example, "Millie owned her own co-op." In honor of this occasion, the Department of Film is presenting a comprehensive retrospective, MERCHANT IVORY PRODUCTIONS: TWENTY-ONE YEARS OF FILMMAKING, from December 8 through December 30 in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 2. The Merchant-Ivory-Jhabvala works encompass short films and features, films made initially for television and for the big screen, docu mentaries and fictional works and blends of both. Many of the most distinctive Merchant Ivory films—including Shakespeare Wallah and the current Heat and Dust—were set and shot in India and focus on the uneasy encounter between Western and Eastern values. Yet this team is equally at home with American subjects, as evidenced by Roseland and The Wild Party, the latter an idiosyncratic view of Hollywood in the 1920s. In addition to their satirical eye for social nuances and their rare literary bent, the Merchant Ivory films also feature a host of memorable performances, both from Indian stars (including Shashi Kapoor and Saeed and Madhur Jaffrey) and such Western performers as Julie Christie, Maggie Smith, Lee Remick, Alan Bates, and James Mason.
