25Th Super Bock Super Rock 18 – 19 – 20 JULY Meco Beach, Sesimbra – South of Lisbon, Portugal 25th Super Bock Super Rock 18 – 19 – 20 JULY Meco Beach, Sesimbra – South of Lisbon, Portugal New line-up announcement: Charlotte Gainsbourg 19 July, EDP Stage Charlotte Gainsbourg joins Disclosure, Kaytranada, FKJ, Superorganism, The 1975, Metronomy and Lana Del Rey on Super Bock Super Rock's line-up for its 25th edition. The authentic music lovers are already on a countdown to another edition of Super Bock Super Rock. From July 18 to 20, the mythical Portuguese music festival is back to Meco, Sesimbra, in an inviting atmosphere for partying. Most importantly, however, is the Music. After having announced Lana Del Rey, there’s another woman on the line- up who promises to bring all of her talent, class and charm to Portugal: Charlotte Gainsbourg. The French singer performs on the EDP Stage, on July 19. CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG There’s no doubt that Charlotte Gainsbourg’s talent is due solely to her talent but there is a genetic part that should not be overlooked: when you are Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s daughter, it would be difficult not to be born with an artistic vein. Charlotte’s essence is precisely this: we are rocked by an apparent softness at the same time that we’re surprised by an emotional tension that lies only within the reach of the best interpreters. She started out as an actress, one of the best of her generation, but music didn’t come second - it was always present in her career since the age of 13, when she recorded her debut album, “Charlotte For Ever”, an album in which she interprets songs written by her father. The following years were dedicated to cinema, having collected awards and played some memorable roles. Charlotte only returned to music in 2001 when she interpreted “What It Feels Like for a Girl” by Madonna… From then onwards, her determination to make music only continued to grow as she started to prepare her album “5:55”, released in 2006, with lyrics written by Jarvis Cocker and Neil Hannon. The audience and the critics were left doubtless: we were standing before someone with her own voice, despite all the references around her. The “5:55” experience was so amazing that Charlotte didn’t take long until she returned to the studio, this time, with Beck. “IRM”, her third album was released in 2009, as a result of that collaboration. She was praised mostly all over the world, she traveled around Europe to present the album and in the meantime, she got involved with cinema again. She returned to music in 2017 with the release of “Rest”. Charlotte Gainsbourg offered us a handful of songs about adulthood, loss, death, fear and a series of intimate conflicts. This album has more references than any other she has released, including literary ones like Sylvia Plath, and it has Sebastián, Paul McCartney, Owen Pallet, Guy- Manuel de Homem-Christo and Daft Punk’s collaboration amongst many others. It’s impossible to resist to the charm of songs like “Rest” or “Deadly Valentine”, some of the songs that will conquer our hearts in Super Bock Super Rock. Charlotte performs on July 19, at the EDP Stage. About Super Bock Super Rock: Super Bock Super Rock presents a cohesive, consistent lineup on its 25th edition, thought for good music lovers, always attentive to the trends of the moment, including the big names and also presenting emerging talents, both Portuguese and international. Three days of Music in a relaxed atmosphere next to the Meco beach at a walking distance from the Albufeira Lagoon. A place known for its beaches and often associated with relaxing moments. For its 25th edition, Super Bock Super Rock returns to the idyllic setting of Meco, where some of the most memorable editions of its history have been held. For this edition, Super Bock Super Rock offers free camping for the 3-day Pass holders from the previous Wednesday [17 July] to Sunday [21 July] and the festival goers will be able to enjoy a festival on a natural and green vegetation carpet. There will also be free buses to the beach which will take the route between the Festival and Meco Beach, in order to avoid the need to use own transportation by the public who, having acquired the 3-days pass, will opt for the free camping of the Festival. Counting with the important partnership of Sesimbra Town Hall, Super Bock Super Rock returns to the Herdade do Cabeço de Flauta, at Lagoa de Albufeira - Meco - Cabo Espichel, an area with unique and breathtaking landscapes, including some of the patrimonial, environmental and landscape values of the region, such as the Sanctuary of Cape Espichel, dinosaurs footprints or Little Lagoon. Having Super Bock Super Rock in this location is a way to show all the tourism potential of this site, being a stimulus for local economy based on hotels, catering and adventure activities linked to the sea and Serra da Arrábida. The 25th edition of Super Bock Super Rock will be a great celebration! Of the longevity of the Festival, and of what matters most, Music. CHAPTER 2 ‘From the night and the light, all festivals are golden’: The festivalization of culture in the late modernity1,2 Paula Guerra Abstract Festivals have been stated as important forms of social and cultural participation. In the twenty‐first century, all countries have been faced with a number of annual2 festivals, but also by diversifying the type of festivals, its location and its audiences. The festival model has expanded all over the world and became globalize. With this model emerged the so‐ called ‘festivalization of culture’. Portugal was no different in this phenomenon. The main purpose of this chapter is to explore the Portuguese festival dynamics. These dynamics have the function of globalization coding, marketing and culture of media coverage, mobilizing thousands of actors on the supply side, in mediation and on the demand side. There are several elements that prove this in Portugal: unprecedented evolution in the number of festivals over the past two decades; the spread of festivals around the country, especially in its Atlantic coast and in metropolitan areas; the exponential increase of the habitués; the weight of the turnover of the festivals in the statement of accounts culture and cultural industries; the importance of festivals for the launch and projection of the bands; and, above all, the design of a new way of life in an environment marked by consumptions, appropriations and embodiments of practices, associated with experience and sociability of the festival. 1 This chapter result of an intensive research carried out since 2005, anchored in three projects. The first, developed between 2005 and 2009, Urban cultures and youth lifestyles: Scenery, sounds and aesthetic in contemporary Portuguese (SFRH / BD / 24614/2005), at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS‐UP), coordinated by the author of this article and funded by the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT).

  • Events Brand Personality: Insights from Music Festivals in Portugal
EVENTS BRAND PERSONALITY: INSIGHTS FROM MUSIC FESTIVALS IN PORTUGAL Joana Gonçalves1 Manuela Guerreiro2 Júlio Mendes3 Luís Nobre Pereira4 ABSTRACT The changing trends in the marketplace and the proliferation of events, have become a reality in which those responsible for managing them seek adequate differentiation strategies through brand management approaches. Although brand personality has been studied in the case of different products, the theory has not been analysed in music festivals contexts. This study aims to analyse what extent is the scale of brand personality developed by Aaker et al. (2001) useful to characterize the brand personality of musical festivals? This research focuses on the study of four of the most iconic music festivals in Portugal: Rock in Rio, MEO Sudoeste, Optimus/NOS Alive and Super Bock Super Rock. Empirical data was collected from university students whose profile matches the profile of the target segments of these four events. This study contributes to the theory as it elaborates on the BP scale in the special case of musical events. It will be also particularly useful to musical events’ organisers as it will enrich their knowledge about the most relevant personality traits that best characterizes this kind of events brands. Keywords: Brand Personality, Music Events, Exploratory Factor Analysis. JEL Classification: M31 1. INTRODUCTION With the growing importance of the “symbolic” (Lash & Urry, 1994; Zukin, 2004) and experiences (Pine & Gilmore, 1999), public events in general have been growing in popularity over the last 50 years (Tafesse, 2016). They have become an important instrument to politicians and policy makers to whom events are seen as contributing to create a festive atmosphere in the city (Richards & Palmer, 2010).

  • Popular Music Journalism As Public Sphere
UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING PEDRO NUNES Department of Film and Media POPULAR MUSIC AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE: THE CASE OF PORTUGUESE MUSIC JOURNALISM Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January, 2004 i Abstract Music journalism has been acknowledged as an important space of mediation between artists and consumers. Journalists and critics have played an historical role in the creation of discourse on popular music and are acknowledged by the music industry as an important referent in promotion strategies. Research on the subject has been mostly focused either on the relationship between music journalism and the wider music industry in which it operates or on its status as a field of cultural production. Little consideration has been given to the role played by music journalists in articulating popular music with wider political, social and cultural concerns. This thesis will examine the case-study of Portuguese popular music journalism. It will address its historical evolution and current status by taking into consideration some dimensions, namely, the wider institutional contexts that frame the status of music journalism and how they work upon it, the ideologies and values realised in journalistic discourse, the journalists’ relationship to the music industry (as represented by record labels/companies and concert promotion companies) and issues of interactivity with readers. The thesis will draw on theories of the public sphere and, to a lesser extent, on Bourdieu’s notions of field, capital and habitus to assess the possibilities for music journalism to create reasoned discourse on ii popular music and, therefore, contribute to wider debates on the public sphere of culture.

  • Biography Boss Ac
BOSSAC BIOGRAPHY BOSS AC Inheriting a passion for music from his mother Ana Firmino, one of the greatest Cape Verdean talents, Boss AC soon revealed his rare talent. His first appearance on record, “Rapública”, was released back in 1994. It featured on a compilation which brought exposure to some of the most prominent underground Portuguese rappers such as Black Company, Zona Dread and Líderes da Nova Mensagem. He is one of the few artists from that era who still go on releasing nationally successful rap hits. His debut album, “Mandachuva”, from 1998 was recorded in the United States and produced by Troy Hightower, one of the most requested Hip-Hop producers in the US. Early on AC demonstrated his strong open minded vision, foretelling the maverick route he would follow. During the following years he embarked on several career paths – he produced and promoted shows, released records, composed music for TV programs (“Masterplan” and “Último Beijo”) and films (“Zona J” and “Lena”), and still found time to participate in works of some of the greatest national music artists, such as Xutos & Pontapés and Santos e Pecadores, among others. His second album of originals “Rimar Contra a Maré” – fully recorded, produced and mixed by the author himself – was an exploration of Portuguese- African music, fusing its traditional roots with the modern sounds of the street. It was also perhaps a more autobiographical and introspective record, revealing the artist’s wiser mindset. Success was slowly but inexorably on its way. The success of “Rimar Contra a Maré” crossed continents; a result of which was the nomination of the music video “Dinero”, at the African Video Awards, in the category “Best Special Effects”, by the well known South-African “Channel0”, a sort of African MTV.

  • 25Th Super Bock Super Rock
25th Super Bock Super Rock New line-up announcements: Roosevelt Ezra Collective Gorgon City July 18, 19, 20 Herdade do Cabeço da Flauta, Meco - Sesimbra The countdown to Super Bock Super Rock continues. With an ever-eclectic line-up, there’s music for tastes in this 25th edition of the festival: Roosevelt, Ezra Collective and Gorgon City are some of the most recent confirmations. ROOSEVELT The project Roosevelt was born in 2012 with the desire to take a risk and go further artistically, usually defined as “techno-meets-indie-rock”. Marius Lauber’s talent has made this meeting something magical - the alternative rock form his origins now seemed to perfectly marry the synthesisers he has learned to master over the years. The first big hit from this project was “Sea”, the single released by Greco-Roman (Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard’s label). His first EP, “Elliot”, was released right after in 2013. The song that titled this first collection of four songs showed us a dance music crusader in love with rock (and vice-versa). As the name Roosevelt became more and more widely spoken, Lauber continued to work and his first self-titled album saw the light of day in 2016 and contributed to the musician’s growing success, guaranteeing sold-out shows and invitations to be in the best festivals of the world. In the middle of all that, he still found time to dedicate himself to some remixes of artists like CHVRCHES, Rhye or Glass Animals. In 2018, he decided to make some new music, testing new territories.
