CHAPTER 2 ‘From the night and the light, all festivals are golden’: The festivalization of culture in the late modernity1,2 Paula Guerra Abstract Festivals have been stated as important forms of social and cultural participation. In the twenty‐first century, all countries have been faced with a number of annual2 festivals, but also by diversifying the type of festivals, its location and its audiences. The festival model has expanded all over the world and became globalize. With this model emerged the so‐ called ‘festivalization of culture’. Portugal was no different in this phenomenon. The main purpose of this chapter is to explore the Portuguese festival dynamics. These dynamics have the function of globalization coding, marketing and culture of media coverage, mobilizing thousands of actors on the supply side, in mediation and on the demand side. There are several elements that prove this in Portugal: unprecedented evolution in the number of festivals over the past two decades; the spread of festivals around the country, especially in its Atlantic coast and in metropolitan areas; the exponential increase of the habitués; the weight of the turnover of the festivals in the statement of accounts culture and cultural industries; the importance of festivals for the launch and projection of the bands; and, above all, the design of a new way of life in an environment marked by consumptions, appropriations and embodiments of practices, associated with experience and sociability of the festival. 1 This chapter result of an intensive research carried out since 2005, anchored in three projects. The first, developed between 2005 and 2009, Urban cultures and youth lifestyles: Scenery, sounds and aesthetic in contemporary Portuguese (SFRH / BD / 24614/2005), at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS‐UP), coordinated by the author of this article and funded by the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT).

  • Events Brand Personality: Insights from Music Festivals in Portugal
EVENTS BRAND PERSONALITY: INSIGHTS FROM MUSIC FESTIVALS IN PORTUGAL Joana Gonçalves1 Manuela Guerreiro2 Júlio Mendes3 Luís Nobre Pereira4 ABSTRACT The changing trends in the marketplace and the proliferation of events, have become a reality in which those responsible for managing them seek adequate differentiation strategies through brand management approaches. Although brand personality has been studied in the case of different products, the theory has not been analysed in music festivals contexts. This study aims to analyse what extent is the scale of brand personality developed by Aaker et al. (2001) useful to characterize the brand personality of musical festivals? This research focuses on the study of four of the most iconic music festivals in Portugal: Rock in Rio, MEO Sudoeste, Optimus/NOS Alive and Super Bock Super Rock. Empirical data was collected from university students whose profile matches the profile of the target segments of these four events. This study contributes to the theory as it elaborates on the BP scale in the special case of musical events. It will be also particularly useful to musical events’ organisers as it will enrich their knowledge about the most relevant personality traits that best characterizes this kind of events brands. Keywords: Brand Personality, Music Events, Exploratory Factor Analysis. JEL Classification: M31 1. INTRODUCTION With the growing importance of the “symbolic” (Lash & Urry, 1994; Zukin, 2004) and experiences (Pine & Gilmore, 1999), public events in general have been growing in popularity over the last 50 years (Tafesse, 2016). They have become an important instrument to politicians and policy makers to whom events are seen as contributing to create a festive atmosphere in the city (Richards & Palmer, 2010).

  • Popular Music Journalism As Public Sphere
UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING PEDRO NUNES Department of Film and Media POPULAR MUSIC AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE: THE CASE OF PORTUGUESE MUSIC JOURNALISM Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January, 2004 i Abstract Music journalism has been acknowledged as an important space of mediation between artists and consumers. Journalists and critics have played an historical role in the creation of discourse on popular music and are acknowledged by the music industry as an important referent in promotion strategies. Research on the subject has been mostly focused either on the relationship between music journalism and the wider music industry in which it operates or on its status as a field of cultural production. Little consideration has been given to the role played by music journalists in articulating popular music with wider political, social and cultural concerns. This thesis will examine the case-study of Portuguese popular music journalism. It will address its historical evolution and current status by taking into consideration some dimensions, namely, the wider institutional contexts that frame the status of music journalism and how they work upon it, the ideologies and values realised in journalistic discourse, the journalists’ relationship to the music industry (as represented by record labels/companies and concert promotion companies) and issues of interactivity with readers. The thesis will draw on theories of the public sphere and, to a lesser extent, on Bourdieu’s notions of field, capital and habitus to assess the possibilities for music journalism to create reasoned discourse on ii popular music and, therefore, contribute to wider debates on the public sphere of culture.

  • Biography Boss Ac
BOSSAC BIOGRAPHY BOSS AC Inheriting a passion for music from his mother Ana Firmino, one of the greatest Cape Verdean talents, Boss AC soon revealed his rare talent. His first appearance on record, “Rapública”, was released back in 1994. It featured on a compilation which brought exposure to some of the most prominent underground Portuguese rappers such as Black Company, Zona Dread and Líderes da Nova Mensagem. He is one of the few artists from that era who still go on releasing nationally successful rap hits. His debut album, “Mandachuva”, from 1998 was recorded in the United States and produced by Troy Hightower, one of the most requested Hip-Hop producers in the US. Early on AC demonstrated his strong open minded vision, foretelling the maverick route he would follow. During the following years he embarked on several career paths – he produced and promoted shows, released records, composed music for TV programs (“Masterplan” and “Último Beijo”) and films (“Zona J” and “Lena”), and still found time to participate in works of some of the greatest national music artists, such as Xutos & Pontapés and Santos e Pecadores, among others. His second album of originals “Rimar Contra a Maré” – fully recorded, produced and mixed by the author himself – was an exploration of Portuguese- African music, fusing its traditional roots with the modern sounds of the street. It was also perhaps a more autobiographical and introspective record, revealing the artist’s wiser mindset. Success was slowly but inexorably on its way. The success of “Rimar Contra a Maré” crossed continents; a result of which was the nomination of the music video “Dinero”, at the African Video Awards, in the category “Best Special Effects”, by the well known South-African “Channel0”, a sort of African MTV.
