CHAPTER 2 ‘From the Night and the Light, All Festivals Are Golden’: the Festivalization of Culture in the Late Modernity1,2
CHAPTER 2 ‘From the night and the light, all festivals are golden’: The festivalization of culture in the late modernity1,2 Paula Guerra Abstract Festivals have been stated as important forms of social and cultural participation. In the twenty‐first century, all countries have been faced with a number of annual2 festivals, but also by diversifying the type of festivals, its location and its audiences. The festival model has expanded all over the world and became globalize. With this model emerged the so‐ called ‘festivalization of culture’. Portugal was no different in this phenomenon. The main purpose of this chapter is to explore the Portuguese festival dynamics. These dynamics have the function of globalization coding, marketing and culture of media coverage, mobilizing thousands of actors on the supply side, in mediation and on the demand side. There are several elements that prove this in Portugal: unprecedented evolution in the number of festivals over the past two decades; the spread of festivals around the country, especially in its Atlantic coast and in metropolitan areas; the exponential increase of the habitués; the weight of the turnover of the festivals in the statement of accounts culture and cultural industries; the importance of festivals for the launch and projection of the bands; and, above all, the design of a new way of life in an environment marked by consumptions, appropriations and embodiments of practices, associated with experience and sociability of the festival. 1 This chapter result of an intensive research carried out since 2005, anchored in three projects. The first, developed between 2005 and 2009, Urban cultures and youth lifestyles: Scenery, sounds and aesthetic in contemporary Portuguese (SFRH / BD / 24614/2005), at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS‐UP), coordinated by the author of this article and funded by the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). -
Like Musical Theatre and Scripted Television, Jazz and Hip-Hop Are Uniquely, Undeniably North American Art Forms
Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts--A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar--have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique. On their latest full-length effort, IV (due out via Innovative Leisure on July 8th), BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before. The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender," a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grand swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love," upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth"). -
Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: an Analysis Into Graphic Design's
Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

Goldlink 2015 Deck
GOLDLINK 2015 DECK V.5 BIOGRAPHY Where the intersections of the DMV collide, GoldLink is a direct product. The first time 21-year-old GoldLink picked up a mic was only three years ago in his hometown and he has no intentions of putting it down. The emcee is piloting the “Future Bounce” genre, accruing over one million plays on his Soundcloud and capturing the attention of an entire industry with this first project, The God Complex, which released in late spring of 2014. GoldLink’s sound is densely weighted with shimmering polyrhythmic sounds, constructed with formidable producers like Kaytranada, Lakim and Louie Lastic. His sound milks nostalgic cuts of 90s hip-hop and R&B and the area’s natural go-go heritage with transcending circadian drops of EDM and Afro-Caribbean drum patterns. GoldLink’s raps are calculated, tackling them with a roller-coaster delivery, with a distinct voice and unmeasurable cadence. With his unyielding charm, Goldlink tackles his own battles of social and cultural injustice, pursuing a relatable voice of romantic instability. Without relying on talent alone, GoldLink has studied rap’s hierarchy, building his biting flow that’s quicker than a sales- man and fouler than a sailor. Citing Edgar Allan Poe, Grimes, and Pink Floyd as his main influences, GoldLink’s subject matter highlights dealing cocaine, gun-toting friends, an absent father, and the general hardship of growing up in the ghetto. With only one full project (The God Complex) under his belt, he has still been able to receive the support of outlets like FADER, Complex, Noisey, Shade 45 and VSCO––which documented GoldLink’s meeting with Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin at his Malibu-based Shangri La studio. -
Events Brand Personality: Insights from Music Festivals in Portugal
EVENTS BRAND PERSONALITY: INSIGHTS FROM MUSIC FESTIVALS IN PORTUGAL Joana Gonçalves1 Manuela Guerreiro2 Júlio Mendes3 Luís Nobre Pereira4 ABSTRACT The changing trends in the marketplace and the proliferation of events, have become a reality in which those responsible for managing them seek adequate differentiation strategies through brand management approaches. Although brand personality has been studied in the case of different products, the theory has not been analysed in music festivals contexts. This study aims to analyse what extent is the scale of brand personality developed by Aaker et al. (2001) useful to characterize the brand personality of musical festivals? This research focuses on the study of four of the most iconic music festivals in Portugal: Rock in Rio, MEO Sudoeste, Optimus/NOS Alive and Super Bock Super Rock. Empirical data was collected from university students whose profile matches the profile of the target segments of these four events. This study contributes to the theory as it elaborates on the BP scale in the special case of musical events. It will be also particularly useful to musical events’ organisers as it will enrich their knowledge about the most relevant personality traits that best characterizes this kind of events brands. Keywords: Brand Personality, Music Events, Exploratory Factor Analysis. JEL Classification: M31 1. INTRODUCTION With the growing importance of the “symbolic” (Lash & Urry, 1994; Zukin, 2004) and experiences (Pine & Gilmore, 1999), public events in general have been growing in popularity over the last 50 years (Tafesse, 2016). They have become an important instrument to politicians and policy makers to whom events are seen as contributing to create a festive atmosphere in the city (Richards & Palmer, 2010). -
