Unit – I: Wit and Humour & Sir Mokshagundam Vishveshvaraya Wit and Humour: A Tea Party - Ruth Prawer Jhabvala Ruth Prawer Jhabvala was born in Cologne, Germany, into a patriotic Jewish family. They escaped to Britain in April 1939. In 1951, she married Cyrus Jhabvala , a Parsee architect whom she had met in London, and went to live with him in Delhi. She plunged in 'total immersion' into India – the jasmine, the starlit nights, the temple bells, the holy men, the heat. She bore three daughters, wore the sari and wrote of India and the Indians as if she were Indian herself. But her passionate love for India changed into its opposite. By 1975, she found she could no longer write of it nor in it. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, died at the age of 85, achieved her greatest fame as a writer late in life, and for work she had once dismissed as a hobby – she had considered “writing film scripts” just as a recreation. Her original screenplays and adaptations of literary classics for the film producer Ismail Merchant and the director James Ivory were met with box-office and critical success. The trio met in 1961, and almost immediately became collaborators, as well as close and lifelong friends. Her dozen novels and eight collections of short stories (and other stories published in the New Yorker and elsewhere) won Jhabvala the admiration of the sternest critics of her time. Raymond Mortimer thought she beat all other western novelists in her understanding of modern India. To CP Snow, no other living writer better afforded readers that “definition of the highest art”, the feeling “that life is this and not otherwise”. -

Ismail Merchant: Film Producer Extraordinary / Partha Chatterjee Ismail Merchant with James Ivory Ismail Merchant’s passing away on May 25, 2005 marked the end of a certain kind of cinema. He was the last of the maverick film producers with taste who made without any compromise, films with a strong literary bias which were partial to actors and had fine production values. It is sad that he died at sixty eight of bleeding ulcers unable to any longer work his legendary charm on venal German financiers who were supposed to finance his last production, The White Countess, which was to have been directed by his long-time partner James Ivory. Merchant-Ivory productions came into being in 1961 when, Ismail Merchant, a Bohra Muslim student on a scholarship in America met James Ivory, an Ivy-leaguer with art and cinema on his mind, quite by accident in a New York coffee shop. The rest as they say is history. Together they made over forty films in a relationship that lasted all of forty- four years. A record in the annals of independent filmmaking anywhere in the world. Ivory’s gentle, inward looking vision may never have found expression on the scale that it did but for Merchant’s amazing resourcefulness that included coaxing, cajoling, bullying and charming all those associated, directly and indirectly with the making of his films. Merchant-Ivory productions’ first venture was a documentary, The Delhi Way back in 1962. The next year they made a feature length fiction film The Householder in Black and White. It was about a young college lecturer, tentative and clumsy trying to find happiness with his wife from a sheltered background. -

Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone. -

MARKS BEGINNING OF FESTIVAL OF INDIA 1985-1986 WASHINGTCN, D. C. April 16, 1985. The Sculpture of India 3000 B.C. - 1300 A.D. presents for the first time in the United States a survey of the achievement of Indian sculpture on both a miniature and monumental scale. To mark the beginning of the "Festival of India" a series of artistic events in 1985-1986 illuminating the history and culture of India more than one hundred objects executed in stone, ivory, and bronze go on view in the National Gallery of Art's East Building from May 5 through September 2, 1985. Many of the pieces have never been outside India, and some have not been exhibited publicly even there. During her official visit to the United States in 1982, the late Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, and President Ronald Reagan designated this year as a time for cultural, scientific, and educational exchanges between their two countries. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and First Lady Nancy Reagan are honorary patrons of the Festival of India. Air India is providing international transportation. This exhibition received the support of the Hinduja Foundation courtesy of S. P. and G. P. Hinduja.
