Ismail Merchant: Film Producer Extraordinary / Partha Chatterjee Ismail Merchant with James Ivory Ismail Merchant’s passing away on May 25, 2005 marked the end of a certain kind of cinema. He was the last of the maverick film producers with taste who made without any compromise, films with a strong literary bias which were partial to actors and had fine production values. It is sad that he died at sixty eight of bleeding ulcers unable to any longer work his legendary charm on venal German financiers who were supposed to finance his last production, The White Countess, which was to have been directed by his long-time partner James Ivory. Merchant-Ivory productions came into being in 1961 when, Ismail Merchant, a Bohra Muslim student on a scholarship in America met James Ivory, an Ivy-leaguer with art and cinema on his mind, quite by accident in a New York coffee shop. The rest as they say is history. Together they made over forty films in a relationship that lasted all of forty- four years. A record in the annals of independent filmmaking anywhere in the world. Ivory’s gentle, inward looking vision may never have found expression on the scale that it did but for Merchant’s amazing resourcefulness that included coaxing, cajoling, bullying and charming all those associated, directly and indirectly with the making of his films. Merchant-Ivory productions’ first venture was a documentary, The Delhi Way back in 1962. The next year they made a feature length fiction film The Householder in Black and White. It was about a young college lecturer, tentative and clumsy trying to find happiness with his wife from a sheltered background. -

For more information contact [email protected] BELONGING AND NOT BELONGING: Understanding India in novels by Paul Scott, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and V S Naipaul by JANET MARIANA PUGH Submitted for the Degree of PhD University of London Queen Mary and Westfield College July 1993 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is essentially about the "how" and "why" of the Indian experience as documented in novels by Paul Scott, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and V S Naipaul. The study points to the difficulty of arriving at any conclusive definition of the country and its people. I show that differences in attitudes, responses or behaviour are both overt and subtle, and depend upon whether the writer or the character identifies with the situation or community with which he or she interacts. It is the individual's sense of belonging or not belonging to his or her own group - be this along racial, cultural or gender lines - that accounts for the differing perspectives evident in these novels. The points- of-view of the outsider and the insider can therefore be seen as mutual comments upon the other. -

A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, his consistently brilliant and exciting performances have established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, and earned him worldwide fame. His playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity, founded in formidable knowledge and study with his father, the legendary tabla master Ustad Alla Rakha. On Saturday, March 27, concertgoers will have an opportunity to experience Zakir Hussain's mastery of the tabla, as well as the virtuosity of his eight accompanying Masters of Percussion at the UMass Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. The performance by these supremely accomplished musicians will offer the audience an opportunity to experience both melodic (raga) and rhythmic (tala) development, and will feature traditional repertoire from Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) classical traditions, North Indian drumming on tabla in solo and duet, as well as excursions exploring the frontier between traditional and contemporary, folk, and classical genres. -
Merchant Ivory Interviews
Merchant-Ivory: Interviews edited by Laurence Raw (University of Mississippi Press, 2012) Perhaps the sign of a great filmmaker rests in his or her ability to foster a strong division between loyal viewers and perpetual detractors; at the very least, it would at least suggest consistency in the final product. Few contemporary filmmakers have successfully managed to cultivate a distinctive style as well as the creative team behind Merchant-Ivory Productions – so much so that James Ivory once lamented being credited with films he did not direct (and sometimes did not much care for). In his volume, Merchant-Ivory: Interviews, the latest in the Conversations with Filmmakers Series from the University of Mississippi Press, Laurence Raw ably distills this style as ‘period dramas with languid camerawork, long takes, and deep staging, long and medium shots rather than close-ups or rapid cross-cutting’ (ix). And the effect proves as intoxicating for some as it proves tiresome for others. Raw admits, ‘nothing much happens in many of their films, but we learn a lot about the characters and how they cope (or fail to cope) with cross-cultural encounters, including class-conflicts’ (xv). At a time when contemporary Hollywood cinema was growing increasingly insular and rudimentary in its narrative content, the Merchant-Ivory triumvirate – comprised of Indian producer Ismail Merchant, American director James Ivory, and their frequent collaborator, Polish-German novelist and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (who lived in England and India before becoming a naturalised American citizen) – produced films that maintained a strict sense of meticulous detail, literariness, and cosmopolitanism. -

When Gund’s estate unexpectedly denies Omar authorisation, Omar is urged by his girlfriend to travel to Uruguay and petition the executor to change their minds. The Gund “family,” living together on the author’s isolated and decaying estate, includes Gund’s widow, his mistress, her young daughter, Gund’s brother, and his partner. Omar’s unannounced arrival upsets their fragile co-existence and causes all to question their own circumstances, which in turn leads Omar himself to question to what degree, if any; he has been the author of his own existence up until now.
