  • Influence of Agglomerations on the Development of Tourism in the Lviv Region
Studia Periegetica nr 3(27)/2019 DOI: 10.26349/st.per.0027.03 HALYNA LABINSKA* Influence of Agglomerations on the Development of Tourism in the Lviv Region Abstract. The author proposes a method of studying the influence of agglomerations on the development of tourism. The influence of agglomerations on the development of tourism is -il lustrated by the case of the Lviv region and the use of correlation analysis. In addition, official statistics about the main indicator of the tourism industry by region and city are subjected to centrographic analysis. The coincidence of weight centers confirms the exceptional influence of the Lviv agglomeration on the development of tourism in the region, which is illustrated with a cartographic visualization. Keywords: agglomeration, tourism, research methodology 1. Introduction Urbanization, as a complex social process, affects all aspects of society. The role of cities, especially large cities, in the life of Ukraine and its regions will only grow. The growing influence of cities on people’s lives and their activities was noted in the early 20th century by the professor V. Kubiyovych [1927]. Mochnachuk and Shypovych identified three stages of urbanization in Ukraine during the second half of the 20th century: 1) urbanization as a process of urban growth; 2) suburbanization – erosion of urban nuclei, formation of ag- glomerations; 3) rurbanization – urbanization of rural settlements within urban- ized areas [Mochnachuk, Shypovych 1972: 41-48]. The stage of rurbanization is ** Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine), Department of Geography of Ukraine, e-mail: [email protected], orcid.org/0000-0002-9713-6291. 46 Halyna Labinska consistent with the classic definition of “agglomeration” in the context of Euro- pean urbanism: a system that includes the city and its environs (Pierre Merlen and Francoise Shoe).

The historical background of the formation of the cultural heritage of the Jewish ethnic group in the territory of the modern Lviv Oblast, which for many centuries has been the center of Jewish life, is considered. The dynamics of the ethnical composition of the population of the Lviv Oblast in 19312001 is studied and a significant reduction in the share of the Jewish community is found. The dynamics of the share of the Jewish population in urban settlements of the Lviv Oblast is studied, and it is found that it sharply decreased after the events of the World War II, primarily as a result of the Holocaust. A map of the share of the Jewish population in the urban settlements of the Oblast in 1939 is developed.

Abstract. The Badenian (Middle Miocene) gypsum occurring in the Carpathian Foredeep basin is exposed in a great number of locations in Ukraine, including the environs of Shchyrets, 25 km SSW of Lviv. In this area the potential stratotype of the Badenian gypsum is exposed, known as the Tyras Suite in Ukraine. The area is also of great scientific value because of the anhydrite rocks exposed at the Pisky quarry (near Shchyrets).

D'Otto since 1772: «Lemberg. For scholars, the d'Otto map is known only from the publication of its latest worksheet with the image of the city of Lviv in the Atlas of Historic Cities of Ukraine. However, this card consists of 9 sheets and valuable information is also contained on the rest of its pages. Therefore, illuminating and analyzing the image of the terrain and objects on the map in a more complete sense makes scientific sense, since the rest of the sheets have not been published and have not yet been put into circulation. After getting acquainted with the map, we made hand-drawn drawings of the most interesting objects (cities and castles) in our view. These are objects from sheets 4-8. It is on these sheets that the movement of the column of Austrian troops through the territory of Galicia is indicated.
