A Memoir and Writing Family Love: Autobiographical Novel to Memoir, an Exegesis
FAMILY LOVE: A MEMOIR AND WRITING FAMILY LOVE: AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL NOVEL TO MEMOIR, AN EXEGESIS JUDY ROSEMARY SCOTT (ka Rosie) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for The degree of Doctor of Creative Arts In College of Arts School of Humanities and Languages UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN SYDNEY AUSTRALIA (2006) ABSTRACT When I first started thinking about writing Family Love I wanted to write it as an autobiographical novel. This meant a radical departure from my usual writing methods. For one thing, it was the first time in my writing life that I was interested in the conscious use of a period in my life as material for a novel. I had never before attempted this and felt a certain amount of apprehension in abandoning tried and true approaches for something so new and risky. The label, autobiographical novel, seemed to define most accurately for the purposes and process of the thesis what were in fact a series of decisions, vacillations and rationalisations. An autobiographical novel seemed the best form for what I wanted from Family Love, a book that combined the fictional momentum and surprises of a novel with the added depth of personal and political material consciously drawn from real life and living people. I believed that the detailed evocation of a specific time and place my childhood and early adolescence in Sandringham and Titirangi in New Zealand, aided by diaries and memory would allow the story to follow its own fictional bent, and to have the emotionally truthful resonance of fiction without necessarily being completely factual. Abstract A Crenelated Wall: The Rise and Fall of Southern Baptist Institutions for the Separation of Church and State, 1936-1979 by John Timothy Ruckle Jr. Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor David A. Hollinger, Chair This dissertation centers on the origins and projects of the Baptist Joint Committee (BJC), founded and funded in 1936 by the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), and the Protestants and Other Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (POAU), founded in 1948 as the brainchild of Southern Baptist elites. I argue these organizations were primarily concerned with opposing American Catholic projects, especially those which sought public monies for parochial schools. Ironically, the structures and organizations which greatly aided this effort to expand religious tolerance and liberty in this period had their origins in concerns about the Catholic Church and American Catholicism held by many Baptists. -

How to Survive Trauma
This book needs to be read by all who have suffered trauma... Christina Crawford, author of Mommy Dearest HOWTO _ ; SURVIVE RAUM A PROGRAM FOR War Veterans & Survivors of Rape, Assault, Abuse or Environmental Disasters Benjamin Colodzin. Ph D. FOUNDER of OLYMPIA INSTITUTE How to Survive Trauma I was heartened by Dr. Colodzin's work. His thought on the communication process, anger and healing encouraged me to feel a sense of belonging and hope. This book needs to be read by all who have suffered trauma in their lives as well as by those who work with and love us. Christina Crawford, author of Mommy Dearest former Commissioner, Los Angeles County Child Protective Services; Founder, Survivor's Network. Dr. Colodzin has organized a very easy-to-read survival kit for those with post- traumatic stress and their loved ones— techniques for personal recovery that validate the reader's dignity. Cindee Grace, N.D. Director, Multiple Personality/Dignity (an educational organization) Beautiful, excellent, and very useful. Patricia Norris, Ph.D. Clinical Director, Voluntary Controls Program, Menninger Clinic This is an extremely valuable and important aspect of treatment for veterans who need a continuum of various traditional and alternative approaches because of the complexity and severity of their problems. I am pleased to support and endorse this offering of "alternative" healing and treatment approaches that go beyond the traditional office-based therapist-to-dient "talking therapies." Raymond M. Scurfield, D.S.W. Post-Traumatic Stress Treatment Program Director, Veterans Administration While reading your book I was struck by the idea that most Russian people I know, including myself, have experienced at least some post-traumatic symptoms. -

An Introduction to American Studies: Performative Embodiments: the Body in American Culture
An Introduction to American Studies: Performative Embodiments: The Body in American Culture Instructor: Caroline McKenzie email: [email protected] Tuesdays & Thursdays 4:30 – 5:45 p.m. Classroom: Rec 112 Office: HEAV TBA Required text: Burgett, Bruce and Glenn Hendler. Keywords for American Cultural Studies. New York: New York University Press, 2007. The construction of “America” has been a social, cultural, political and economic process fraught in both past and present with complications, contradictions, and contestations. To address the U.S.’ process of nation- building through inclusion and exclusion, this course will introduce you to the construction of identity and difference; the cultures of everyday life; and the transnational. Through these three avenues, this course will explore the meanings given to diversity, freedom, citizenship and subjectivity within situated contexts and discourses of “embodied identities.” This course will introduce you to the key analytical categories of race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, place and dis(ability). As we explore the construction of identity and difference; the cultures of everyday life; and the transnational through the lens of “the American body,” we will examine the ways in which American studies has addressed how collective and impersonal forms of political agency are routinely embodied in propertied, white men . .. The circulation of such ‘overembodied’ identities as public icons and spectacle has been crucial to the protection of established political privilege. At the same -

McKee and Steven J. Shea have asserted, “Few crimes generate greater public reaction than the intentional murder of children” (678). Given prevailing views about the innocence and defenselessness of young people, the slaying of a boy or girl is seen as particularly heinous. Although individuals can imagine an array of reasons that an adult might kill another adult, they cannot fathom what could possibly prompt an adult to murder a child. As Marianne Szegedy-Maszak has written on the subject, “Both the crime and the motivations defy easy comprehension” (28). As a result, the killing of an infant, toddler, or adolescent is regarded as shocking as it is senseless. Given the condemnation associated with child murder, it is surprising how commonly this act is featured in fairy tales. Many of the homicides depicted in some of the most beloved stories are acts of filicide, neonaticide, or infanticide. The Wolf’s consumption of Little Red Riding Hood, the witch’s similar attempt to bake and eat young Hansel and Gretel, the ogre’s slaughter of his seven daughters in “Little Tom Thumb,” and the stepmother’s brutal decapitation of her stepson in “The Juniper Tree” are just a few representative examples. -
