Welcome to beginning Hip-Hop! This class is open to all dance levels, whether you're new to dancing or a seasoned dancer I will help you improve your skills in Hip-Hop and it's related forms with confidence while having fun. My goal is to help you become a better overall dancer and I will provide you the resources and information you will need to succeed for this style. This is a comprehensive beginning Hip-Hop dance program that will give you more than just choreography that regular studio classes offer. If you're ready to learn then get ready to dance your hearts out!

Basic technique and style of Hip Hop dance both historical and current emphasizing musicality, rhythms, and the basic movement required to develop Beginning Hip Hop skills.

Course Objectives

1. Students will obtain understanding of body alignment and coordination relevant to the Hip Hop culture. 2. Understand complex rhythm in music and combinations. 3. Students will know historical Hip Hop development with the Western culture.

1. Students will be able to execute Beginning Hip Hop combinations with awareness and coordination. 2. Students will know historical Hip Hop development in the Western culture. 3. Students will perform and be able to assess the historical development of Hip Hop Choreography.

In Beginning Hip-Hop Dance, students gain a strong foundation and learn the fundamentals of hip-hop techniques as they venture into the exciting world of this dance genre.

Attendance Policy

Synchronous meetings on Zoom will be held Tuesday and Thursday 4:30-5:30 P.M. You may attend either one or both. The lessons taught on Tuesday will be taught again on Thursday. Recordings will be available on Canvas after each live session if you miss class.

You should attend class at least once every week to fully benefit from the lessons but extenuating circumstances arises that can make this difficult. If you cannot attend a class, please let me know. Alternative assignments are available if you are unable to make class. I ask that you contact me to discuss your options as soon as possible.

Exams and Assignments

Points will be awarded for participation on Zoom, completing dance submission assignments, answering discussion posts, completing quizzes, group project work, and research papers.

This course has suggested due dates in order to keep the flow of the discussions going but you are free to complete the assignments on your schedule. If you do work ahead keep in mind that you are responsible for replying to your peers and you will need to check back on previous discussions.

Zoom Participation | 2 points per week To successfully complete the course and benefit fully your presence and participation on Zoom and on Canvas will be important. Zoom classes will be held twice a week during its designated time however you may attend to either session; the same lesson will be taught on both days. 2 points will be awarded for fully participating in the class session. Canvas Quizzes | 12 quizzes, 2 points each

Quizzes on Canvas will relate to asynchronous material presented in the modules.

Dance Submissions | 11 submissions, 4 points each

At the end of each unit or module you may be asked to submit a recording of what you learned for evaluative feedback. This is only to assess your understanding of the material and intended to improve your dance technique. Recordings are generally under a minute and submitted through Canvas.

Informal Research Project | 1 project, 10 points video, 10 points paper

At the end of Module 4 you will be asked to create a group dance using social Hip-Hop moves learned. Students are welcomed to form groups of 2-4 to complete this project. A 1-page research paper on your chosen social dance move will accompany your video.

City Dance Concert Paper | 2-page paper, 20 points A 2-page paper critiquing the fall City Dance Concert will be assigned. This semester the concert will be available online.

Final Exam Submission | 20 points

The final exam will consist of a dance video that you will create on your own. The more creative the better!

Make-up work is available. Please discuss with me ahead of time if possible for alternative assignments.

Late Work

Dates assigned are suggested due dates. Items not completed by the due date will be assigned no points in the grade book until it is received. Keep in mind this course is out of 200 points and that at least 8 points are award per week. Over time missed work can potentially bring your grade down significantly. Assignments, quizzes, and submissions can pile up rather quickly if not completed within the given time frame. You may always work ahead if you wish, that's the beauty of online classes.

Academic Dishonesty Policy

Cheating
