Bolivia -- Key Muslim Converts Assert Local Peril, Ally with Zealots Abroad
12 May 2009 OpenȱSourceȱCenter Report Bolivia -- Key Muslim Converts Assert Local Peril, Ally With Zealots Abroad Bolivia has a Muslim population of 1,000 people, constituting less than on tenth of one percent of its total population. A number of local Islamic leaders have ties to Iran or the Palestinian territories -- in one case with an individual affiliated with a suspect involved in the 1994 Hizballah bombing in Argentina -- and at least one community leader has expressed support for violent resistance in the Palestinian territories. While Bolivia under President Evo Morales has proposed a number of economic development agreements with Iran, and in March 2009 expelled Israeli diplomats citing Israel's handling of the Palestinian territories, these strategic political actions were not a result of Bolivian Muslim influence. The following paper is an overview of mosques, Islamic organizations, and religious leaders in Bolivia and their susceptibility to foreign Islamist influence. Demographic Information Bolivia's National Statistics Institute (INE) keeps no official statistics or demographics on the country's Muslims, but in early 2008 the centrist Santa Cruz regional daily El Nuevo Dia estimated the country's total Muslim population at 1,000, predominantly located in La Paz and Santa Cruz (24 February 2008). x The online version of the independent La Paz daily La Razon cited a claim by Sheikh Mahmud Ahmer Abusharar, president of the Bolivian Islamic Center in Santa Cruz, that there are 500 Muslims in that city alone (14 January 2007). x There are also Muslim organizations in Sucre and Cochabamba. The Saudi-funded pan-Arab satellite news channel Al-Arabiyah notes the Muslim population of Sucre is mainly composed of immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon (www.alarabiya.net, 6 February 2006). -

The Murder of Alberto Nisman
The Murder of Alberto Nisman How the government of Cristina Fernández de Kircherner created the environment for a perfect crime Douglas Farah, Senior Fellow, Financial Investigations and Transparency -- International Assessment and Strategy Center (IASC), March, 2015 ABSTRACT Whether or not the Fernández de Kirchner government had a direct hand in Nisman’s killing, it deliberately and systematically created the environment in which the assassination could take place with impunity, and the integrity of the justice system is compromised Table of Contents PREFACE 3 THE CONTEXT SURROUNDING NISMAN’S DEATH 5 THE NISMAN INVESTIGATIONS 10 NISMAN’S FINDINGS ON IRAN IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE 10 THE GATHERING STORM OF IRAN AND THE BOLIVARIAN STATES 13 IRAN’S STATED GOALS AND STRATEGY 16 THE ACCUSATION 17 THE PLAYERS 18 THE UNRAVELING 21 2 Preface This paper is the sixth in a series of IASC studies on Argentina and the Fernández de Kirchner government. It was by far the most difficult to write because it looks at the body of work of Alberto Nisman, a brave veteran Argentine prosecutor, and personal friend, who was killed while conducting a criminal investigation which spanned several continents and led to formally accusing a sitting president of serious crimes. The author had often discussed with Nisman the role of Iran in Latin America, and the danger this strategic penetration presented to the United States, Latin America, and the rule of law. In this sense, the loss is personal. In a much larger sense, the loss of Nisman’s voice is a national tragedy -- all the more so because of the government’s bizarre effort to ensure the case will never be solved. -
After Nisman
Special Report After Nisman How the death of a prosecutor revealed Iran’s growing influence in the Americas by Joseph M. Humire After Nisman How the death of a prosecutor revealed Iran’s growing influence in the Americas Joseph M. Humire © 2016 Center for a Secure Free Society June 2016 Center for a Secure Free Society Acknowledgements Intensive research projects are almost always a team effort. This report is no different; it simply would not have been possible without the assistance of experts, researchers, and supporters, both in the United States and abroad. Many of them cannot be named, either because of sensitive official positions or as a result of delicate political circumstances in their home countries, but all of them have my profound gratitude. Special thanks go out to my research team, including Heisol Zelaya, Rachel Echeto, Sara Haire and Maia Mendizábal (a pseudonym) from Argentina. Your tireless effort made this report a profound success. Since the report is centered around the work of Alberto Nisman, I am also grateful to many of his friends and colleagues in Argentina who helped me understand the impact of his work and circumstances surrounding his death. I would especially like to acknowledge Miguel Ángel Toma, Cornelia Schmidt-Liermann, Elisa Carrió, Patricia Bullrich, Waldo Wolff, and Ezequiel Vázquez- Ger. As always, my team at the Center for a Secure Free Society (SFS) deserve recognition, especially our international fellows Dardo López-Dolz of Peru and Ricardo Neeb of Chile, as well as our friends in Brazil. So does our chairman Alejandro Chafuen who has been supportive of this project, as he has for many others. -

TESTIMONY OF JOSEPH M. HUMIRE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CENTER FOR A SECURE FREE SOCIETY (SFS) BEFORE THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON HOMELAND SECURITY SUBCOMMITTEE ON OVERSIGHT AND MANAGEMENT EFFICIENCY HEARING ON “THREAT TO THE HOMELAND: IRAN’S EXTENDING INFLUENCE IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE” Tuesday, July 9, 2013 311 Cannon House Office Building Washington D.C. 20515 A Center within the International Freedom Educational Foundation 509 C Street, N.E. • Washington, D.C. 20002 • @SecureFreeSoc • www.SecureFreeSociety.org Good Afternoon, Chairman Duncan, Ranking Member Barber, and distinguished members of the Subcommittee. Thank you for inviting me to appear before you today to address an issue that I have been closely studying over the last three years. This research has taken me to 15 countries throughout the Hemisphere on fact-finding trips documenting numerous eyewitness accounts, collecting investigative records of countries in the region, and analyzing confidential reports produced by sources developed from over a decade of work in Latin America. Most of the information and data collected has been corroborated with open source research and verified by regional and U.S. Government officials as well as subject matter experts. What follows are my analysis and findings related to Iran’s presence, activities and influence in the region, and recommendations as it relates to U.S. homeland security. A JOINT ASYMMETRIC STRATEGY To properly understand Iran’s influence in the Hemisphere, we have to understand their strategy, globally and in the region. A strategy that according to most experts is increasingly reliant on Iran’s asymmetric capabilities to compensate for its conventional shortcomings. -
