    The History and Philosophy of the Postwar American Counterculture: Anarchy, the Beats and the Psychedelic Transformation of Consciousness By Ed D’Angelo Copyright © Ed D’Angelo 2019 A much shortened version of this paper appeared as “Anarchism and the Beats” in The Philosophy of the Beats, edited by Sharin Elkholy and published by University Press of Kentucky in 2012. 1 The postwar American counterculture was established by a small circle of so- called “beat” poets located primarily in New York and San Francisco in the late 1940s and 1950s. Were it not for the beats of the early postwar years there would have been no “hippies” in the 1960s. And in spite of the apparent differences between the hippies and the “punks,” were it not for the hippies and the beats, there would have been no punks in the 1970s or 80s, either. The beats not only anticipated nearly every aspect of hippy culture in the late 1940s and 1950s, but many of those who led the hippy movement in the 1960s such as Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg were themselves beat poets. By the 1970s Allen Ginsberg could be found with such icons of the early punk movement as Patty Smith and the Clash. The beat poet William Burroughs was a punk before there were “punks,” and was much loved by punks when there were. The beat poets, therefore, helped shape the culture of generations of Americans who grew up in the postwar years. But rarely if ever has the philosophy of the postwar American counterculture been seriously studied by philosophers.

Blankenstein, architect; facade altered 1892, [Frederick William] Kurtzer & [Richard O.L.] Rohl, architects Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 459, Lot 23 On March 24, 2009, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Aschenbroedel Verein (later Gesangverein Schillerbund/ now La Mama Experimental Theatre Club) Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 11). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Four people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of the Municipal Art Society of New York, Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, and Historic Districts Council. In addition, the Commission received a communication in support of designation from the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America. Summary The four-story, red brick-clad Aschenbroedel Verein Building, in today’s East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, was constructed in 1873 to the design of German-born architect August H. Blankenstein for this German-American professional orchestral musicians’ social and benevolent association. Founded informally in 1860, it had grown large enough by 1866 for the society to purchase this site and eventually construct the purpose-built structure. The Aschenbroedel Verein became one of the leading German organizations in Kleindeutschland on the Lower East Side. It counted as members many of the most important musicians in the city, at a time when German-Americans dominated the orchestral scene.

    Dia Art Foundation Judith Malina and Filip Marinovich Readings in Contemporary Poetry Thursday, September 13, 2012, 6:30 pm Introduction by Vincent Katz Filip Marinovich is a poet and a playwright. He is the author of Zero Readership (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2008) andAnd If You Don’t Go Crazy I’ll Meet You Here Tomorrow (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2011). He wrote and directed the plays Skin Around the Earth,Throne Room Snow, and The Karma Bookshop for his theatre company Comet Party. His work has appeared in Aufgabe, Brooklyn Rail, EOAGH, Lungfull, Revolutionesque, and 6x6. He lives in New York City. He is a double Virgo with a Pisces moon born on September 19th, 1975 in Pittsburgh, PA. He went to boarding school at Brooks School in North Andover, MA, and to college at Columbia and grad school at Columbia School of the Arts. He has a BA in English and an MFA in Poetry. He studied poetry with Kenneth Koch and Ron Padgett at Columbia, and has lived in Yugoslavia, New England, California, France, Greece. He has worked as a teacher at Columbia School of the Arts, The Poetry Project at St Mark’s Church, taught a poetry workshop for Occupy Wall Street at Harvard last winter, and as librarian for Occupy Wall Street at Zuccotti Park last fall. Zero Readership: An Epic (2008) comes with notations that track the geo-political transformation of Belgrade from Yugoslavia to Serbia and Montenegro to Serbia. So this poetry has, partially, a journalistic function. It intends to show, via poetry, the settings of a particular, war-torn, part of the nearby landscape.
