Callus induction from leaf base explants occurred in the dark on three media with MS mineral solution containing 4.52 μM dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 4.83 μM naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), 0.46 μM kinetin (Kin), 5% sucrose and 200 mg L-1 casein hydrolysate. The media differed only in vitamin and/or proline content. Calli from ovary culture were achieved on MS medium contain- ing 45.25 μM 2,4-D. The mean percentage of callus induction from leaf base explants was 18.9%, with no sig- nificant differences between media, and 27.3% from ovary sections. All embryogenic calli were formed on MS media containing 0.45 μM 2,4-D, 4.44 μM benzyladenine (BA) and 0.49 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) under low light intensity (25 μE m-2s-1). -

Gryshko National Botanical Garden, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NBG). Material and methods. Fruits of I. halophila, I. pumila and I. hungarica were collected on the botanical- geographical plot “Steppes of Ukraine” of NBG during 2015–2019. Fruit parameters were measured using a regular ruler. Morphological terms are provided, according to Artyushenko & Fedorov (1986). Colors were determined by Bondartsev’s (1954) scale. Results. In all analyzed species, the fruit is a trimeric and trilocular loculicidal capsule with multi-seeded locules. This capsule is erect, straight, leathery, glabrous, opening by dehiscence from top to bottom along the dorsal veins of carpels. The morphological peculiarities of the fruits, which may be additional diagnostic characters of these species, are established. In particular, in I. halophila capsule is cylindrical, with the upper part elongated into the apical spout (long, thin, bent to the side). -

I. spuria L. subsp. musulmanica (Fomin) Takht., is one of the the 10 species of Limniris section and grows wildly in Eastern Anatolia. Plant material was collected from Van-Erciş road. Besides the morphological and anatomical investigation; oil content and methyl esters of fatty acids of the seed oils were examined in this study for the first time. Fatty Acid methyl esters were prepared according to the method of Metcalfe et al. (13) from the oil obtained by the Soxhelet apparatus with n-hexane. Analysis of the methyl esters have been carried out with GC-MS. Myristic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Stearic Acid, Oleic and Arachidic Acid were determined as the main fatty acids in the oil. Seeds were rich in Linoleic (40 %) and Oleic Acid (30 %). Key words: Iris spuria subsp. musulmanica, seed, morphology, anatomy, seed oil, fatty acid. Iris spuria L. subsp. musulmanica (Fomin) Takht. Hatay to Cappadocia Flowers, Birds & Ancient Sites of Turkey A Greentours Trip Report 12th to 23rd May 2012 Led by Seda Soylu and Phil Benstead The following report is from the itinerary we did in 2012. The 2013 tour differs in that instead of visiting the Hatay region in 2013 we’ll be starting the tour in Konya and Kulu Golu in the centre of Anatolia and the rest of the tour will be done in reverse of the 2012 order. So the most relevant days are days 5-12 in this report, and these correspond to days 4-11 (but in reverse order!) in the 2013 itinerary. Daily report written by Phil Benstead and Seda Soylu Day 1 Saturday 12th May arrival We all converged on the airport at Istanbul by different routes, negotiating the visa buying process and the march across to the domestic terminal. The deciding game between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Championship took place in Istanbul during the evening and even the airport departure area was caught up in the excitement. Very atmospheric. We eventually all met up at the gate for our late night onward flight and then dozed through the short journey to Hatay and were soon being met by a smiling Seda and whisked off in the minibus to the hotel. Day 2 Sunday 13th May the road to Yayladağı A leisurely start to the day was required this morning after the late (early?) arrival at the hotel last night. Breakfasted we headed for the van and drove south towards Syria on the road to Yayladağ ı. -

The natural diet of goitred gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) was studied over the period of a year in northern Xinjiang, China using microhistological analysis. The winter food habits of the goitred gazelle and domestic sheep were also compared. The microhistological analysis method demonstrated that gazelle ate 47 species of plants during the year. Chenopodiaceae and Poaceae were major foods, and ephemeral plants were used mostly during spring. Stipa glareosa was a major food item of gazelle throughout the year, Ceratoides latens was mainly used in spring and summer, whereas in autumn and winter, gazelles consumed a large amount of Haloxylon ammodendron. Because of the extremely warm and dry weather during summer and autumn, succulent plants like Allium polyrhizum, Zygophyllum rosovii, Salsola subcrassa were favored by gazelles. In winter, goitred gazelle and domestic sheep in Kalamaili reserve had strong food competition; with an overlap in diet of 0.77. The number of sheep in the reserve should be reduced to lessen the pressure of competition. -

There were comments on various issues related to the new NARGS website, not all complimentary, and then it turned to the Quarterly online and raised some points about which I would be very pleased to have your views. “The good news is that all the Quarterlies are online and can easily be dowloaded. The older issues are easy to read except for some rather pale type but this may be the result of scanning. There is amazing information in these older issues. The last three years of the Quarterly are also online but you must be a member to read them. These last issues are on Allen Press’s BrightCopy and I find them harder to read than a pdf file. Also the last issue of the Quarterly has 60 extra pages only available online. Personally I find this objectionable as I prefer all my content in a printed bulletin.” This raises two points: Readability of BrightCopy issues versus PDF issues Do you find the BrightCopy issues as good as the PDF issues? Inclusion of extra material in online editions only. Do you object to having extra material in the online edition which can not be included in the printed edition?
